A Russian woman had her fingers badly bitten when she tried to clean her son's fish tank, not realising it was full of piranhas.

The woman, from Saransk, told doctors she thought they were just well fed goldfish and wanted to do her son a favour.

But as she put her hands in to catch the fish they launched a frenzied attack on her hand, clamping onto her fingers and not letting go.

She only managed to get the fish off her hand by banging them against the side of the fish tank, and then called an ambulance to take her to hospital.

Doctors who treated her said she had been lucky not to lose her hand in the attack and that she needed extensive surgery.

The woman lost most of the flesh from two fingers in the attack, local media reported.

A neighbour said: "She had no idea the pet fish in the tank were predators."

You'd think everyone would know what a fat goldfish looked like.

On the contrary- I've never actually SEEN a piranha outsode of animation....thouigh I doubt I would have confused it with a goldfish

I supose if you have never seen a phirana before(and remember the one that bit her would have been small )you could easily mistake it for a gold fish

I remember once i was at a party and ended up sleeping with this woman,when i woke up my girlfriend walked into the room and took a dafty,i could have swore that night it was my girl friend i went to bed with

Piranah a bloody ugly...not that goldfish or pretty. But there's a very big difference. This woman obviously doesn't pay too much attention to what goes on with her son if she didn't know he had piranah.

Man, a fish with big teeth should be a sign to most people not to stick their hand in there.

Yeah, they are quite "boxy" to look at from the side and the lower jaw kind-of hinges down when he opens his mouth, giving strong crushing abilities. When they bite, they clamp down. Nasty buggers

I'm pretty sure they weren't THAT big; it was the best pic I could find. However, as you can see from the pic, piranha have distict features not to be confused with a goldfish.

She should have got a kid to do it for her ,two jobs for the price of one,clean fish tank and the fish well fed

As much as I would like to say how ignorant the woman was, ya'll would be surprised with how ignorant some folks are about the simple stuff in this world. In other words, I've seen worse.

I cant quite understand how she actually thought they were goldfish, those species of fish do look quite different if you actually have a look at them.

Ye ,but if you are a thicko and have never seen a goldfish in real life or in a book you would be confused,remember there is a small piece of orange on the phrana,just like there is a small piece of an a in an apple
