I was talking to a very reliable friend the other day , who breeds horse . We wern't discussing Unicorns at the time but she did happen to mention that occasionally Thoroughbred horses are born with small horns like those found on a calf . Just my 2 cents original.gif
BuhiBuhi-Kun
Cool, so it is like a recessive trait that sometimes pops up to say hello. Maybe in the past more of the population was expressing this gene....food for thought original.gif
Althalus
It certainly would explain why there are unicorns in the mythology and legends of different cultures.

Unicorns are just myth. There have been horses born with a small (very small) horn like appendage on their heads, though very rare and almost unheard of these days. Saddly, they didn't have mystical powers, and the ones born with this centuries ago, were often killed because they were considered freaks of nature, and in some cultures 'bad'.

The myths are pretty cool. I would have to say that anything someone believe's in, is 'real' to them. It may not be something that is tangible, but in their own mind, it is real. So, in a way, they are real, if you 'really' believe they are.

I know for a fact that unicorns had 1 horn, and when they moved their heads their horn would wobble like a cheaply fastened prop. I know this because you can see it happen in the movie "Legend".

WHAT THE.......Legend did an awesome job with everything they did in that movie! Do you know how hard it would be to stabalize a horn on an animal as active as a horse! Poopy on you guys! Thats one of my favorite movies! po.gif

well, i never saw the entire movie. It was on TV a while ago and all I saw was a giant wobbly unicorn horn. That, and "goblins" that looked like reject extras from an episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Sorry about that.
Althalus
I like the film too, but personally, I thought that it was too short.
mandyistheshiznit
I thought it was cool. When it comes on I can't take my eyes away its so pretty. They did a good job.

i have always loved unicorns, mostly for what they represent rather than the beleif that they really existed, however some of the previous post got me thinking. i have read all myths are based on reality, its just the stories got wilder each time it was told, so the truth got distorted and hid. well, perhaps in ancient times there were more of these "freaks" (i use term loosly) of nature, and when they mated, their offspring had the same oddity. the human race has a history of destroying what can not be controlled or what is feared, and if these creatures were thought to have powers they were hunted to exticntion. 'cept for the rare oddity that is born today. also, if two mated that had the same oddity, and it kept on , and kept on, isnt it possible that the so called horn could have become more pronounced? just a thought
mandyistheshiznit
I agree with you angel_psychic, I dont care whether or not they actually did exist, I just want to think that there are or were such beautiful, perfect creatures that walked this world.......it makes me all warm and tingly inside....heheeh. wub.gif
weezil936
the bible mentions unicorns? really? where? also, it mentions lions living in the middle east, which has always baffled me.. wink.gif

anyway, yes. i think unicorns do/did exsist. i remember reading something on this there was a picture someone took of what was supposed to be a unicorn running through the woods. it was studied and deemed real, but.. i dunno.. people didn't wanna hear it. sad.gif

Verging from unicorns into dragons... The Babylonians were well aquaninted with a creature called the 'Sirrush', which was obviously quite different from any other living creature. Even in the Bible, in the Apocrypha's 'Book of Bel and the Dragon', it is reported that, in the temple of Bel, the priests kept a 'great dragon or serpent, which they of Babylon worshipped'.

In (I'm looking up, here) the 40th chapter of Job, they talk of the 'behomoth', which seems to be a description of a real animal, and one not very far from a modern description of a dragon.

Bible aside, the curious fact remains that ancient cultures seemed to have all had some creature that could be referred to as a 'dragon', and yet all these cultures evolved more or less independently of each other.

I'm not saying there were dragons, much less am I saying the Bible should be read in any remotely literal sense (if read at all), but dismissing 'mythical' creatures out of hand is surely not what this thread is all about.

Aha- back to unicorns. If not dragons, why not unicorns. Natural history books tell me that sabre tooth tigers roamed the north-east of England (where I'm from), which seems absurd. Nevertheless, it is so. How many other absurd animals may have been so?

Just a thought.

I've heard that the legend of unicorns originated from ancient times when mariners would travel north for their fishing expeditions and run into groups of a small kind of whale called a narwhal.

These narwwhals are special in that they live in arctic regions and swim very close to the ice shores. Often the ice freezes around them and they are trapped in their pods until the ice remelts. These whales are somewhat rare and happen to have a tooth that can extend up to 6 feet staigh out from their mouth and looks suspiciously like a unicorn horn.

As the story goes, the mariners would bring the teeth back when they returned home and sell them as unicorn horns in the hopes that they would turn a profit. The horn was supposed to have magical and medicinal value to the villages and since few villagers ever went fishing, the fishermen were able to keep their secret of the unicorn horns.

Now, I dont know how accurate that is, but if you ever see a narwhal, the tooth does look remakably like a unicorn horn. http://www.narwhal-whales.com/ this website has a drawn whale, but there are places where you can see a picture of the real thing.
angel_psychic
also, there is an antelope that lives only in the desert, cant for the life of me remember where. it is also surmised that the unicorn myth originated from them as well. anything is possible i suppose, but with so many species that have not been discovered, or became extinct long before this century i think it would be a shame to just assume because it is a myth it could not have been.
mandyistheshiznit
I'd say anything is possible, but alot of the old paintings had Unicorns portrayed with alot of goatlike qualities.........

wub.gif looking back at the way dinosaurs evolved into the animals we know today, i would have to say that, yes there probably is a uni-horned mammal that is land bound, whether or not it looks the way it is so often depicted in literature is another matter.....but wouldn't it be lovely if they really did wub.gif

Weezil try these scriptures:
Numbers 24:8
Job 39:10-11
Deuternomy 33:17

Isaiah 34:7

FYI There is ONE witch named in the Bible do you know who she is?

Does anyone remember when Barnum and Bailey circus had their "unicorn" I NEVER will forget it - I was like 7 or 8 and I was so excited!

i have always doubted unicorns exist. today at least. i have heard of no such sightings or experiences w/ unicorns. so i must express my doubt. no doubt there are those here who probably have seen one, if you know what i mean.

I agree
MoonFox
I believe unicorns existed, and maybe still do. The modernized "horse with a horn" image is not how unicorns were originally seen/described. I do not know when or how the 'horse with a horn' unicons came to be, but these are not what the real unicorns were described as.

The original unicorns are creatures that can very possibly exist. The unicorn is an animal with a horn. WHAT is so impossible about that?
We have many creatures on this planet with horns, so we already know that a creature with a horn is 100% possible. And the old descriptions of unicorns fit an animal that is very likely and possible to exist...

~Besides a horn it had "cloven hooves"- the animals in todays world that have horns also have these cloven (split in the middle) hooves. Goats, deer, antelope, bulls, etc.
~It had a "lion's tail". Now of course lion's have no relation to hoofed or horned creatures. But a similar tail like a lion's can be found on cloven-hooved & horned creatures such as bulls. The tail that is thin, and ending in a tuft of hair.
~Also described often is the "beard". Which a beard can also be found on many hoofed & horned creatures. Most obviously the goat.
~The ears are also described as large. Not small triangles like horse ears. But large like the ears of deer, goats, and other cloven-hooved & horned creatures.
~the body-type of the unicorns were also described as smaller and thin like that of a deer or goat rather than huge and muscular like a horse.

So all these features DO exist in animals that we are familiar with today. The only difference with unicorns is there is one horn instead of 2. So by saying a unicorn is an impossible animal, you may as well just say it is impossible that an animal can have only one horn.
The old unicorn sightings described features perfectly common in 'regular' animals except for only one horn.
Small thin body, cloven hooves, large ears, lion-type tail, beard, beard, and a horn.

Also remember that just because sightings aren't common, or there is no traces found of unicorns, this does not mean they never existed. Every day new species get discovered that there was no indication of ever existing. New species of dinosaur bones get uncovered that had never been undug before. So there is countless things that have yet to be discovered. And with unicorns there is already possible sightings, and the descriptions based on these sightings describe a creature than can very well exist.

Also we should forget about a real unicorn being a magical creature and think of it just as a normal wild animal like a deer or an antelope. Stories may have just added the whole magical thing because an animal so beautiful and rare can easily be transformed into a magical creature in stories.
A unicorn is not a 'magical horse with a horn'. It is a wild, deer or goat-like creature that has one horn instead of 2.

I remember. I was excited too. There was so much controversy over this though.
They didn't just glue a prop on that poor animal. Didn't they surgically attach it?
I wonder whatever happened to that unicorn.
Anirbas
Ahh I think they surgically implanted it. I remember hearing about a year after its debut it died.

That's so sad. sad.gif
Can you image doing something like that now?

[B]I'm so sorry to disagree...here are the following reaons why Unicorn do exist, and noy just fairytale story created by storytellers. The reason are as follows:

#) 1. I think Unicorn are not myth. And they do exist, not in this plane. But in the plane or dimensions where elves, leprechaun exist. Beings 1st created by God Before us.
It was mentioned by a local publised book, in our country, that when God created the trees, forest & sea or oceans, He also created Magickal beings who will take care of them. Thus, came the fairies, nymphs, mermaids, elves etc. etc.

#2) Secondly, the story of Helen of Troy was said to be Myth. But there are archeological findings that validate the existenced of Troy.

In my country, I saw in my very own eye, a hand of a Merman, who grabbed the offerings of our local shaman.
The story is this...there were some local treasure hunting group who were diving for Lost Treasures...and one of them, got Lost from his group divers.
There were many expert divers, Navy Frogmen who went to helped and hopefully, could helped rescue the lost diver. Unfortunately, all efforts went Naught.
The wife needed to look for his husband's body, becoz, it was needed to claim for his Insurance money. The insurance company wouldn't release the money without getting a document from the local Government, confirming his husband's death. Hence, the wife went & look for helped. And she went to this local shaman who can communicate with "unseen" beings. So they went to the site.
After some prayers and rituals, the shaman was able to communicate and went into trance, and she was told in order for her to get his husband's body, she has to offer something...and so she bought one freshly slaughtered pig, fresh herbs, grains, and sweet cakes made locally...to make the story short.
As soon as the pig, was thrown into the sea...many have seen a hand of a Merman, who caught the dead pig...and out came the body of his husband.

Hope I didn't scare anyone....
p.s. I was there, and I saw it...coz It was my teacher who went to helped this great local shaman. My teacher shaman was trained by a Hopi Indian shaman.
Benjo Koolzooie
I think it is possible they could have possibly been around at one time, but I have never really read up about them, so I don't know.
I bet there isn't any around today though.
mandyistheshiznit
well, I like unicorns, so regardless of whether or not they did actually exist, as long as theyre still in my little world than Im good. tongue.gif
