If you're trying to lose body fat, you cannot spot-reduce. The only way you can burn any fat is to do cardiovascular activities, like running, swimming, biking, etc.
And watch what you eat. Stop eating white flour and sugar, and you'll lose the pounds in no time. But the most important thing is the exercise. Try to do a workout every day, even if it's just for 20 minutes. A little can help a lot.

I always lose wieght during the summer. Why? I have 2 school age children who no longer feel the need to contribute to the well oiled machinery that keeps this home running smoothly. I make twice the amount of trips up the steps in search of dirty laundry and dishes. I am preparing three times the usual amount of food for all the friends that seem compelled to congregate at my house (thereby creating yet another monumental mess to clean up). I also spend an ungodly amount of time in the car driving from here to Timbuktu two or three times a day. I never get a chance to sit, let alone eat. So, it's all good. By September, I'm a size 6, and too tired to even show it off.

You're not going to see the difference in a week. That'll take about a month.

If you find some active friends to do the excise with, it makes it go by a lot easier and is atually more fun. Don't surround yourself with downers.

These are methods that have helped me keep weight off;
If you drink a lot of pop, cut it out of your diet, you can lose a quick 5lbs, b/c it's a lot of empty calories (or switch to diet). Also, don't worry so much about cutting back on what you're eating, just try to eat more balanced meals instead and less junk food. Good calories help the body with burning fat and give it energy whereas bad ones are empty and do nothing. Always eat and don't skip meals, you may take weight off by doing so but it's actually not good for you. You have to keep your blood sugar levels up or you won't have energy, also your body thinks it's starving itself so instead it will burn muscle and store fat. Try to exercise atleast 3 times a week. It doesn't have to be strenuous to work either. If you're looking to lose weight do cardio, if you're looking to tone up do exercises such as free weights, pushups, situps, etc.. I use workout DVD's so I can do it at home and not embarrass myself at the gym, Also costs way less. If you just change a few things and stick with it you will see results.

Even though I didnt ask the question..... Thanks to all for your input.
I used to be a hard core lifter only..... long story short, divorce, loss of job, lots of drinking and junkfood. Now its time to remember who I used to be and get rid of these 20 pounds of "lazy muscle". Still got the arms/chest/back, but I gained a belly.
Funny, it was almost predestined that this was the first topic I clicked on after a week of no readiing and also wondering if I should rejoin the gym today.

Who knows what weight looks good on what person; but if you want to be "cut" then cross-training is great. In addition to a lifting regiment, throw in some fun and random stuff. Summer is the perfect time for water-sports galore! Anything from swimming/water polo with friends to skiing and wave running (the kind that you stand up on. I told my girlfriend's family that if I rode their Jetski for three hours a day, I would be the strongest person on the planet and that's no joke!) help trim the fat and build strong, if not big, muscles. I am also a big fan of hiking and rock climbing. Forget about the bike for training, a brisk walk is less energy efficient therefore, you work harder (unless you are replacing your daily car commute with a bike ride then, by all means, do it

) I would say not to worry about gaining weight as its just a number, good luck!!!!!!!

I'm on what I call the "Tae Bull" diet. At least once every week, I drink five or so cans of Red Bull and do an hour of Tae Bo. Both boost your metabolism like crazy so you'll be able to eat anything and stay slim.
Kev,
You are aware of the caffeine in Red Bull?
One can is equivalent to 1 cup of coffee....
....a fact that not everyone is aware of is that you can OD on caffeine...and it isn't pretty. I hope you aren't chugging 5 at once...
Red Bull IngredientsI walk 3 miles every morning before the sun really comes up and I have lost 20 pounds since February and I eat like a horse!

Since you are over 150 lb naturally your body needs around 8oz of protein a day to grow more, although less amount can work also. I would suggest that you start by eating 1 gram of protein per pound and do moderate to vigorous exercise at least 3-5 times a week.
Protein shakes are an excellent source to get your protein from because they are usually low in fat(especially saturated fat) and high in protein. If you do decide to try the protein shakes, I would suggest that you drink one as soon as you wake up in the morning(basically the first thing you should have in the morning) and also one after you are done with your exercise.
Also here's a tip-- Don't skip the "nutrition" aspect during your quest to get cut because that is just as important if not more, to getting results.
Another thing, don't do the same exercise everyday for the whole week, because you will not see results and you run in the possibility of injuring your muscles.
Develop a workout routine where you exercise different parts of the body everyday and you give the muscles that you just exercised time to heal(which is the reason for drinking a protein shake after you exercise. Protein will repair your muscles)
Usually your muscles repair in about 2-3 days when your first start working out.
