WESTVILLE, N.J. Jun 2, 2005 — A state corrections officer faces charges that he secretly videotaped members of his family as they used the bathroom. Troy Cates, 37, was arrested Wednesday, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's office said. He was released on his own recognizance later that day.
Authorities said the family members were taped as they were undressed by a camera hidden in a bathroom lamp.
The prosecutor's office has not released the relationship of the two alleged victims to Cates.
Cates has been suspended from with pay by the state Department of Corrections, where he is a senior corrections officer.

I have no clue why a person would do that... probably some sexual thing but who knows... maybe he was trying to figure out who was using his razor blades or something, it doesn't say...
I just didn't know it was illegal to put cameras in your own home. How did the cops know?

You're right. It doesn't say why he actually put the cameras there.. but it's illegal to put cameras in any bathroom.. and i think that includes your own. Because then you can video tape guests, your daughter.. etc.. without them knowing.

and I don't think anyone should keep a person from putting cameras anywhere in their house they want to... worry about Real criminals.

This is a bit disturbing. I would feel totally violated if someone in my family put up camera's in the bathroom. S'pecially in a place where ya do private things. That's just disgusting.

The article said he was acorrections officer; perhaps he was worried a member of his family was doing drugs. Just thinking out loud.

Initially, that's how I felt, but then I read another comment that it may be a way to see if anyone is doing any illegal substance in his home.
I guess it'll all come out in the trial.

I actually agree with the drug theory. I mean, there are new refrigerators that have video/pics for people taking others food. Maybe someone was taking medicine that didn't belong to them, or illegal drugs, so the guy wanted some proof.
I'm thinking if the guy was a perv, he would also have camera's in the bedrooms of the house. His home, and if he's that crafty with the bathroom, why not all the rooms? Why just the bathroom, unless the other camera's haven't been found.

Well lets all hope the camera was only there to catch someone taking drugs and not for some guys perverted enjoyment. It is a very serious breach of anothers privacy in my opinion and even if his intentions were good its just not acceptable to me anyway.

I would think that if he suspected drug use he would put the cameras elsewhere in the house. If indeed this was for a sexual thrill, he is one SICK PUPPY!!

He could have put cameras that only viewed say, the medicine cabnet.. or something.. I doubt there was good intention.

I hope I detected a bit of sarcasm in your posts. Being from the south I take offense to that type of generalization. Perhaps I should label all folks from your country as uppity and conceited, not real fair is it?

I still don't understand why it's illegal to put a camera anywhere you want in your own house. That's just crazy to me.
Or, how the cops found out he had it? If he's a cop he should've known the laws about it... but that law just isn't right that I can see.
It was probably something "for the children" I'll bet.

Alright.. so your father decides to put a camera in the bathroom to tape you showering/whatever else you do in the bathroom naked.
You would shrug it off and say "well, it's his bathroom?"
Or, your child goes over their friends house.. you find out that there was a camera in the bathroom and their friends father taped your child in the bathroom.. you would shrug it off and say "well, it's his bathroom?"
It should be illegal. At least in my opinion. I'm glad it is.
