Guys, and girls, I'm tired of hearing about how great Halo and Halo 2 are. Theres one, maybe 2, simple reasons why the game blew up. First, I have to start off by saying that Computer games have always been better then platform games, this is undeniable, however platform games are in some ways more popular because
1) many people are unable to afford a computer and keep it updated
2) computer gamers are often associated with nerd-types, which is just a sterotype, cool people play computer games too.
anyway back to why halo got so big. After you break the barrier of becoming a gamer, its not the graphics, the story, or the weapons that keep you playing a game. It's the gameplay itself and how well it accomodates player SKILL into the game, this is where Halo became succesful.
The First Reason: Recharging sheilds.
Players are finally rewarded for the time they put into moving the two little joysticks around, this is where goldeneye and all the other games before Halo failed. Now, in Halo, someone who actually got good at the game could kill an enemy (player or computer), wait for a short period of time, and have another "fair fight" with the next person he runs into; Because, lets be honest, noone likes it when two good players go head to head, one dies, and one is left with 10 health, a small amount that any random 8 year old could handle. And running around looking for healthpacks? Thats lame too.
The Second Reason: X-Box Live
Console games could never live up to computer games because playing 1v1 or 2v2 with your friends all looking at the same TV cut into 4 different sections gets boring. Microsoft finally gave the player a reliable connection between x-box users across the country, now, getting bored takes a bit longer.
Why am i going on with this rant? Simple. Just to show you how huge companies get you hooked, once they found out what gets you hooked, they give u just enough to suck all that green out of you. Microsoft is loving the 7 bucks a month they get from their millions of subscribers. So, think again. Is Halo really that great? You're lying if you say it is. Yes i've played it for like a month on and off, and i had x-box live and I had that stupid microphone too.
I'm still a fan of Counter-Strike. And for fear of saying too much about the video-game industry and giving my brilliant ideas away, I will stop talking now.

You have to be one of the stupidest people in existence.
Point one:
Xbox Live is 49 bucks a year. You're just dumb if you pay it by the month. Not only is it cheaper than most PC game subscriptions out there, but you get much more for your money.
It's a service. DON'T PAY FOR IT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO. If you do want to play online, on any live-compatible game out there (there are hundreds), pay 50 bucks a year (or the price of a single Xbox game) and you're set. Voice Chat, game downloads, stable online gameplay. It's a steal if you have half a brain.
Point two:
Halo got big because it was amazing. A console game that delivered a BEAUTIFUL storyline, spanning THREE books, TWO games, and an Alternate Reality Game (ilovebees.com.). A truly massive adventure.
PC fanboys have always tried to bash it, because they're jealous of its success. If you don't like something, claim it sucks!
Stupid people make me sad.
A small point to those claiming consoles are inferior... According to
this article, it might not matter soon, anyway.

I was never a fan myself, but saying people are 'lying to themselves' for liking it is just a really stupid thing to say. People like different things, you need to accept the fact that ALOT of people did like Halo, not because they were brainwashed, but because it appealed to every aspect they like in a videogame. That's what made it so great and such a massive success.
This same thing can be said for every videogame, so it's really quiet irrelevant. If you don't like a game, don't play it, and let the millions upon millions of people who do have their fun.

Thank u! Thank u! You completely took the words outta my mouth. Your so right about PC ppl. THe reason why I dont like playing games on my PC is one i have a crappy graphics card, and my comp is only 900 MHZ.
Now your probably saying why dont u go out and buy a new graphics card? I would but I dont want to spend some 300 to 800 dollar on the Latest ATI Radeon or Nvidia Card. I rather use my money buying more console games. And yes I'll admit I'm to cheap to afford an Alienware or Falcon comp. I'm not a hardcore PC Gamer thats y. The only game I play on my PC is Call of Duty which owns all other WW2 games on PC. Hah about time someone admitted they are tired of Halo and Halo2.

That probably expains everything right there. Everyone I've met who's a major CS fan has dismissed everything else. I've heard many things from them.
"CS is better than everything else because it is!"
"CS is better because a lot of people play it!"
and so on...
CS looks like crap and it plays even worse. What kind of "realistic" game lets you shoot straight through walls?
Halo, on the other hand, is an awesome game. With a fan base of over five years, it's had its fans for ages. I've never seen so much comitment to CS.
You know, this really isn't worth my time. I'll just leave you with a pic from Halo and CS.

I was completely aware of the fact that an X-box live subscription allows you to play all x-box games that have an online option, to tell you the truth, the difference between paying 7 bucks a month versuse 50 dollars a year means nothing to me. So, say i stick it out for a year, I will be out 30 bucks. Do you know what 30 bucks means to me? Absolutely nothing. My time is far more important to me than 30 bucks over 12 months.
I feel sorry for you man, your argument is stupid.
As for the storyline and the book, I never paid much attention to it, so I'll take your word for it that it was a very good story and and awesome read. You know what i thought was a good story? Lord of the Rings, but I don't feel like I need to play the video games to validate that. Wrong again, skip.

Sean, if you have such a big deal with it, why do you need to create a topic discussing it?
As i said i'm not a fan of Halo, but i certainly don't need to openly tell the millions who are they're stupid for doing so. This is just selfishness and classic jealousy.
If you don't like it, don't play it and let the people who do like it have their fun. Since this topic exists simply to bash a videogame for the sheer hell of it and has no valid arguments, i'm closing it. There are several other Halo topics you can voice your opinions in.

Wow, OK there have been a couple replies in the short time it took for me to respond to Hawk.
Burnside, I'm not trying to bash people for liking Halo, and I'm not trying to bash the game, I'm just offering an explanation to why it developed the fanbase it did.
Janiel, I used Counter-Strike as an example of another game, developed for the Computer, which became huge for much the same reason, before you jump to conclusions I'll say that I did play a lot of CS at one point, but that has long past, i probably play 2 hours of video games a week, sometimes more and sometimes less. If you did some more research on how many people played or even still play Counter-strike world-wide you will be very surprised. Lastly, the pictures your posted proves nothing about which is a better game. What it does prove is how graphics aren't as important as gameplay, yes the pic of counter-strike isn't impressive, but do you know how many people played it like that when the newer games had far better graphics? Another # to take in account. Also, there is a newer version out based on the half-life two engine (CS:Source), check out those graphics, and tell me Halo is better.

It developed the fanbase it did because it appealed to millions of people who found the game fun. I don't see why that is hard to understand.

Burnside, I'm not calling anyone stupid, your a bit mistaken, I referred to Hawk's argument as stupid, only after he used the word first.

i personally dont hate halo, but i dont like it either. it's just there. as for the CS arguements, CS's fan base has been there for about 6-7 years now, and still going strong. its not the graphics or the bug freeness of CS that make it great(cause trust me it doesnt

) it's the fact that the gameplay is addicting, its very expansionable to fit the player's needs, and it gives people a satisfaction knowing they killed some pro in japan

but, CS also has it's drawbacks. those stupid "proz" just go to n00b servers and pwn all the n00bs, but if a n00b kills him, then the n00b is "hacking." it's also a hard learning curve for newer players.
id choose CS over halo any day, but i play KOTOR the most
