I am trying to find out what food is favoured by unicorns. Not sure if any one here is up on unicorns (or if anyone actually visits this forum now) but I need to know before Wednesday this week.

Sirloin steak and barbequed Hamster, relish optional.
You can always borrow my pet unicorn if you can't lure one with bait.

I need to know for an essay that my son is writing for school. Surely someone must know!

Jun 6 2005, 03:44 PM
Well, if you are actually serious, and saying they existed, they would have eaten the same thing as horses since they were horses; just with horns.
Please don't ask me what horses eat.

Jun 6 2005, 03:49 PM
Horse food maybe? I suspect they were vegetarian and lacked the ability to cook.... so that rules out sausages
Hay and sweet feed. Maybe a little salt lick.

This is silly are you trying to capture one too.

Different cultures' unicorns were portrayed differently. I think the unicorns of Persia were actually supposed to be carnivorous-- they were a little different than the romanticized modern version. They had blue faces and red and black horns and were very vicious.
The Chinese unicorn, the Ki-lin, was supposedly very sacred in Buddist teachings, so was therefore very enlightened and would not harm any living thing, plant or animal. I guess they didn't have much food options then.

The Anglo-Saxon unicorn represented in English crests and tapestries were horse and goat-like, so would probably eat grasses and such.
I suppose it all depends on which version you mean.

Here's some info I found that might be useful:
"The diet of a Unicorn can only be speculated upon. There are two conflicting theories as to what one eats, or what it does not eat, as you will see.
The first hypothesis is that it eats as a normal horse would, grass, oats, hay and the like. There have been sightings reported in legends in forests, head to the floor, cropping intently at the grass. This behaviour could also be interpreted perhaps that the animal eats just because it is expected to be seen doing so, or perhaps there is some other purpose. It is not known.
The second, although seeming far-fetched and wild, is widely accepted. It is believed that the animal does not need to eat at all, being an animal of the Gods. It simply absorbs the solar power of the sun, drawing the energy directly from it. Many believe that the horn plays a major role in this process. "

Little known fact (just for trivia's sake) > Unicorns really can happen....in that in a rare (though not too terribly rare)anomalie with goats they can on occasion have what appears to be only one horn. When our oldest son was little he couldn't drink cow's milk, and goat's milk was not sold on the grocery shelves, so we frequented a goat farm to buy our son his milk. We got to know the owners of the farm quite well. The first time we saw an all-white goat with only one horn right in the middle, we were amazed. It looked just like the ones you see it mythical paintings. It was explained to us that occasionally a goat is born with its horn buds situated right in the centre next to each other, rather than on opposite sides of the head. As the horns grow they wrap around each other, twisting into what, for all the world, looks like one big horn. Over the years we saw a few more like that. I suspect that mayhap that is where the whole unicorn myth started from....a birth anomalie.

But unicorns are magic? It was believed that if any poisoned food was brought near the unicorn's horn, the horn would begin to bleed.

How about having your son do his own homework instead of doing it for him? Or asking dozens of people on an internet forum to do it for him?
Sorry to be acerbic, but I get mucho agravated at people that come on forums and ask "Will you please do my/my child's homework for them?"
It's akin to cheating.

He was asked to research opinions. I am not keen on him accessing forums himself so I sat with him and typed on his behalf. I don't think that that can be considered cheating; it is not as though there is a right or wrong answer.
Jeez!

I am in agreement with you PranceyDog. My boys have had projects that required research online and I did the research for them. I didn't do the assignment for them, but I got them the information they needed. I'd feel like an irresponsible parent if I let my kids loose on the Internet. Especially when they are 14 & 11. You just never know what all they're going to come across.

Heh....trust me, they take computer classes in school and my kid knows his way around filters and blocks...I have to change the password at least twice a week...they have their own computer, and I can enable parental controls, but if I don't keep an eye on them, they find their way around it. The kid's going to be a hacker, I just know it.
