The Simpsons are finally to appear on the big screen!
After one of the writers let the cat out of the bag in an interview with DVD Fanatic yesterday, the creators of The Simpsons have officially confirmed to industry paper Variety that a big screen version is on its way. According to James L Brooks, the film is still in the very early stages but pieces are already falling into place. "We've got a very good and interesting idea, and it's different from the show," he told Variety. "You know, it's like the South Park movie where it's just a bigger, longer, amplified version of the show. I can't tell you anything specific about it. My wife doesn't even know the secret."
"They've wanted to do this since season two," said writer Mike Reiss. "It's been 13 years of wanting to do The Simpsons movie. Finally Fox said, 'Let's just do it!' We never had the greatest idea that was compelling but Fox said, 'Maybe if we start paying you, you'll get inspired.' And sure enough, it worked!"
There is no clue yet as to a release date on the movie, but it is expected to be at least two years off. Keep your fingers crossed.

Well it's about damn time! I just hope it will actually be funny, unlike the series' recent episodes.

Neat!!!! I hope it makes up for the rather uninspired seasons they have had in the last few years. I was always a huge fan so of course I'm looking forward to it.

It official; the Simpson's flick is finally on the launching pad. And when I say "launching pad" I mean just that; it will be 2007(most likely) before we even see a trailer for the much-awaited film. Nancy Cartwright leaked the story on June 8th saying that table reads have already commenced and looks forward to working with the long-running cast on a closer level.
To me the news is rather bitter-sweet as I fear the feature film will culminate the end of the most successful animated series in history. I just hope the momentum of making making the film with light a fire under the proverbial asses of the creative staff and come up with some decent episodes for the last couple of seasons.

I fear for the simpsons! tv to film transitions very rarely work as the creators try to ;use their initiative' and bring in 'new fresh ideas' which rarely work. I was disappointed by south park, disappointed by the league of gentlemen and so please excuse my foreboding of disappointment by this. If they stick to the typical Simpsons formula that we all know and love just with a better, possibly more complex plot i will have no quarrel with it, but i fear they may try something stupid like bringing in a new family member.

are you guys aware that the simpsons is the longest running primetime comedy in the history of tv?quite an accomplishment for something that started out as a skit on another show.

No matter how good or bad it is no one will ever forget about the simpsons movie and hopefully it isn`t signalling that the end is near for such an awesome series.

I do fear that the Motion Picture will be the end of the series, as I always knew it would come to this eventually. *sigh* All good things must come to an end; I just hope the picture will be good so they can go out with a bang! After that....there will always be re-runs of the good seasons and the DVD's of course.

nick_fury, im totally afraid too... especially the fact that the writer said the ideas gonna be differnet from the show in such high anticipation, so true that the show has become seriously cheesy the last few seasons... nevertheless we'll always have the classic episodes like one featuring (store detective) Don Brodka or Homer posing as Cornelius Talmage to fall back on, regardless of how sh**ty the movie is...

Although seasons 9-12 were like a visit to the dentist (complete with the drilling and the claven ) the last few seasons have been a breath of fresh air to the Simpsons faithful. The last few episodes were more than brilliant. If it has to end with a movie then let it end with a "bang" and not a whimper. I am more than happy to let it end on a good note, so-to-speak.

I was hoping it would be live action. Or something different. Otherwise, its basically the Simpsons in two hour format.

Does anyone else think that maybe the show is a bit dated? Now don't get me wrong, I am a big fan, been watching it since the beginning. But I find now that the writers are thinking that we will laugh at anything.
If the show was to be made into a movie, I think that it should have been done at least five years ago. That way, Maude would be in the movie!
I'm curious, though. What could the movie possibly be about. They've already been to every continent!

That was my first reaction. I think it's coming 5 years too late. It should've been made when the show was in it's prime, not when it's hanging by a thread. I'll probably see it and I hope it'll be good but I'm pretty skeptical. Whatever the case, they need a good, fresh idea for a plot and they need it bad.
