First of Two
Xenogears/Xenosaga... complain about too many cut scenes all you want, but at least they made sure the story was told right.

Vagrant Story

Saga Frontier

Every final fantasy EXCEPT for VII... every other final fantasy was great, but VII was Die Hard meets Captain Planet.

Grandia

Star Ocean

.//hack

Chrono Trigger, Cross, and (if they're still making it) Break

Lunar Blue

Arc the Lad

Legend of Dragoon

Dragon Warrior

Vampire: The Masquerade (both redemption and bloodlines)

Yes, I played too many video games growing up... but believe it or not, I did learn what creates a working story better than I did dissecting books or movies, because my characters had to live with how I did things. Chrono Cross in particular spelled elements like that out to me. Even if I outgrow them someday, I still owe them that.

i'm just curious, what are the guidelines that make a rpg game an rpg game?

Denotes any game for which character development is the main driving gameplay mechanic. Typically one or more characters are created and shaped by the player, then embark on a series of encounters that increase the inventory, wealth, or combat statistics of said character(s). Traditional RPGs are turn-based and in a fantasy setting (Rogue-like games, The Bard's Tale, Wizardry, Pool of Radiance, etc.) but many fit into either different settings (Wasteland, Fallout, etc.) or are real-time instead of turn-based (Diablo, Nox, etc.) or even a combination of real-time and turn-based (later Final Fantasy games

PSO is indeed wholesome for online RPGs, but offline Moe is very much hooked on the KOTOR games.

chrono trigger is really good grin2.gif

original.gif wizardry 1 - proving grounds of the mad overlord (and wizardry 5)

i found dungeon seige to be bland and boring.. not suprised as it was a micro$oft product. a blatant inferior clone of Diablo 2.

Beyond Divinity is an interesting indie release.. i install it every now and then.. and then i remove it soon after..

D&D TOEE was a let-down. even after the patch it was full of bugs? (no wonder it was selling so cheap at the time)

I'm programming an RPG (similar to wizardry) if anyone is interested send a PM. if anyone programs RPG's send a PM also plz original.gif
Super Pancake
Not all microsoft games are bad I wish Microsoft studios would put out more of their rts, rpg games and revive midtown madness and freaking come out with Freelancer 2 already. Anyway Planescape Torment is probably the best crpg Microsoft ever put out and in general most people will say its the best of the best crpg along with Diablo, Baldurs Gate and Fallout.

Man this tread is old i had to be on crack to say super mario is an rpg we can all agree paper mario is one at least. Since my last post I converted to PC gaming from Nintendo 64/Gamcube fanboy and played many Crpg and adventure games.

I'll just add NWN 2 and the expansion pack Mask of the Betrayer its the best crpg in a long time.

Diablo 2... I was so addicted lol.
