This is just one of nine photographs made in 1917 by two young cousins, 16-year-old Elsie Wright and her 10-year-old Frances Griffiths, in England. They confessed that they had made the figures from paper and hat pins. The pictures were made very famous by such people as Sir Arthur Conan Doyal. But, they are fakes.

See more details Here, in the Unexplained Mysteries index. For more, search for "Cottingly Fairies" on the net.

Just a thought...
Elise admitted in 1983 that they had cut the fairy pictures out of a magazine. Wouldn't someone of the time that had read the same magazine have noticed the similarities? Debunkers of today would have gone to extreme measures to locate that (those) magazine and compare the pictures.

hmmm..... mellow.gif

I have always wondered how anyone with half of the intelligence of a human being not notice that these obviously look like cutouts? Is it due to the fact that in the early years of photography, there was less understanding of how 3d and 2d (I know the cutouts are technically 3d as well, but the depth is so miniscule that we will call them 2d for the sake of this argument) objects reflect/refrect light and manipulate shadows? I wouldn't think so since artists have been painting realistic lighting for centuries.
trick_vixen
Apparently, the girls kept the secret for ages, but they finally came clean, they said that 8 of the 9 photos were faked, but the 5th one was real
Anirbas
ah well i was gonna say that it was a famous fake but it looks as if i have been beaten to it original.gif
djdodo
Does anyone know where can I find the other fake pictures ?? wink.gif

It appears that the fairys are actually drawn then placed in the photograph! wacko.gif wacko.gif wacko.gif

I'm not sure if any one has said this yet, but it was proven to be a hoax. The faries that you see are cardboard cutouts with hair pins stuck into the ground and into the pics of the faries. Like elise said, it was a hoax.

sorry to spoil the moment. But i do believe in faries!

It is obviously fake. Fairies Wear Boots and those ones are barefoot.
AndyThorley
The picture posted on the main page has one slight technical inaccuracy...

The fairies wings are supposed to be flitting (so say the girls) but then there's a waterfall in the background.

If the two (wings and the water) are both moving then why did the wterfall get the expected blur and not the wings?

Answer: Theyre fake...

I know its been said over and over, but I just wanted to kick it down some more.
Though it has to be said...the 5th one does look more genuine than the others.
Raziel
Your just a very clever person, Andy.

I look it and think "Fake", while you make a full diognosis!

Its a very scary thing.

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif Other people know that song?
Potholer
In my personal (and amateur) opinion, the 5th may look marginally more real but it still does look faked. The faces look more like they were drawn than photographed.

how could people have been fooled for so long with these!?
Raziel
Because nobody like us were around to tell them it was a load of tosh
BuhiBuhi-Kun
Don't know about fairies....
maybe a dash of paprika and some oregano they might be good...
indierock12
In regards to the song Fairies Wear Boots, Black Sabbath was a rather well known band.
Raziel
Gee, they weren't were they?

blink.gif Thats really mind boggling information you got there...
Benjo Koolzooie
The girl looks so shocked and amazed she has fairys in front of her.....[/sarcasm].

Maybe at the time no one could believe that two innocent girls would lie about something of this nature. Either way, they are very pretty pics.
Nintendork
I nresponce to papagooch's last post, you can clearly see that they are juist cardboard cut-outs
Athlon64
I was under the impression that they admitted the hoax, but that they had taken the photographs of cardboard cutouts because they were so frustrated that nobody would believe that they had seen real fairies..........
Raziel
People were amazingly ignorant to not see the lies that were being spewed to them.

Please , Paul, tell me where you have seen them. Give me a location so I can catch me a few to play with. Maybe I'll breed them and sell them in pet stores. tongue.gif
algenon_iii
I'm pretty sure one of the girls actually admitted it was a fake.
Bright Eyes
These were proven to be fakes, and I don't think there could have been any question looking at them now, but then these days it's amazing what we can do with a camera. But that doesn't stop me from believing there are such things as fairies.

Has anyone seen the film based on these two girls? I really enjoyed it, and it showed them actually seeing them for real.

And if anyone has seen the film, did anyone notice that it was Mel Gibson that played the blond girl's dad, and was only in it for about ten seconds at the end!

Sorry for wandering off the main topic of the photo! wacko.gif
