The Excite Chat Ghost

In December 1998, a 13-year-old girl named Mandy Belvedere suffered a fatal asthma attack and died in her bedroom in Austin, Texas. Mandy's asthma had been getting steadily worse since 1996, and doctors thought the girl was allergic to modern life. It was hypothesized that the artificial chemical additives which lace so many of our foods nowadays were having a detrimental effect on the teenager's health, but no matter what diet was tried, the girl would end up fighting for her breath, and had to have an oxygen tank in her room. Another reaction was scaley eczema-like patches which would appear on the girl's face and arms. Mandy's condition curtailed her teenaged social life. She couldn't enjoy going to her friend's and she didn't even go to school; she had a daily home tutor who popped in for a few hours each day. Without a doubt, her PC provided her with hours of fun and interaction with other teenagers, as Mandy often talked to her peers via Excite chat rooms. She usually went under the name "Belvedere_13" - her surname and age. Mandy had several friends who talked to her in Teen Chat, and she came across as a very witty and funny girl.

However, after Mandy's untimely death, something bizarre happened. The name "Belvedere_13" continued to appear on the screens of people exchanging messages on Excite's Teen Chat. When Mandy's mother was alerted, she assumed some sick hoaxer was at work, but events took a spinechilling turn when Mrs Belvedere logged onto Teen Chat and challenged the person "masquerading" as her deceased daugher. She asked Mandy to prove she was her daughter by answering three very personal questions (which I cannot reproduce here). Belvedere_13 answered all three queries in such detail, Mrs Belvedere almost fainted. More and more questions were put to Belvedere_13 by the other members of Mandy's family, and all the questions were answered in amazing depth.

"Oh my God is that you Mandy? Is it really my girl?" Mrs Belvedere sobbed.

The typed answer came back...."Yes Mom."

When Mrs Belvedere asked the girl how it was possible to be in a chat room on the Net if she was dead, Belvedere_13 failed to reply. Further questions were also met with a lack of response.

The Excite company was asked to try and trace the whereabouts of Belvedere_13, and they said that was impossible. However, a software engineer who heard about the strange case got permission from Excite to try out new Governmental software which could trace computer users to a general area. The engineer established that Belvedere_13 was logging onto Teen Chat from the neighborhood of Austin, Texas where Mandy had lived, but he could tell no more about the sinister chatter.

Reports are still coming in that Belvedere_13 is still chatting to people at Excite Chat even today. If you use the chat rooms, keep an eye out for Belvedere_13...

I tried to find the teen chat, but all I found were message boards....I searched Belvedere_13 several different ways and couldn't come up with anything. hmm.gif
TaintedDoughnuts
sounds like an urban legend grin2.gif and most of those are false.

@LilaBurrows, maybe someone changed the screenname to protect whoever it is?
_Nyx_
I'd just wondered the same thing after my post.....and it does have the feel of an urban legend....
Neo2005
Yeah and unfrotunatly without real names locations and times you have no way of acually finiding out any authenticity behind it.
greattenchim

I was a regular in an Excite Virtual Places chat room called "the Soapbox" for about 5 years, but either late 2004 or early 2005, these Excite chat rooms closed down. Excite doesn't have chat rooms anymore. I have no idea why - lost all my long-term chat buds when the rooms vanished like that.

I used to go there too. Virtual Places got shut down, I believe, because there were way too many techniques to flood rooms and freeze up rooms, hack people's IDs, etc. I personally had about 20 rapid fire auto - reply progs to just counter-act the other peoples'...it was insane.

The avatar system was awesome though... original.gif

Hi

Something like this took place recently, where the so called ghost of Michael Pennington was using a computer to communicate with people on a Birmingham Internet forum, it even got made into a book that you can read here Wall to Wall Michael Pennington ( Deceased ) I got a reply form the "spirit" grin2.gif and made my name into the halls of fame. Some people actually took this so seriously they claimed to be in love with the ghost, im guessing these types of people are the same kind that love Most Haunted, and are obsessed with Derek Acorah.

You can also find out more about this case on the following links.

Guys, I'm from Houston Tx and heading up to Austin this weekend for a rafting trip. I have never heard of this story before and did some research. There is no record of any "Mandy Belvedere " from Austin Texas nor any hauntings of Mandy. I am going to San Antonio and hope I can go back to the railroad tracks. It's a well known story of haunted railroad track where kids push your car over the railroad.

Sounds like a con to promote a book Faeden....

As for the girl story, it is still possible this is the work of some sick individual. Maybe the girl disclosed alot of personal info online as a result of her rather inadequate social life. Of course this may be a genuine occurance. Who knows really....
