Let me tell u a little bit about chinese vampires.
Chinese vampires are pretty similar to other cultures belief in vampires. I don't know exactly how people become vampires in the chinese beliefs but i think it has to do with if you don't bury the dead with the right rituals, don't quote me on that but i'm pretty sure. ANYWAYS, chinese vampires are kinda different. They're not the swuave, charming types like Count Dracula, They're kinda like zombies. However they are blind. Sounds pretty stupid eh? A blind vampire, BUT they look for their pray by sensing when people breathe. Basically if you hold your breath when a chinese vampire is around they won't have a clue where you are, but the moment you let out a little breathe of air, they'll know exactly where you are. They are pretty much immune to everything, garlic doesn't stop them. There are chinese priests who write down a protection on a piece of yellow paper, in blood, which can either stop the vampire from entering your house, OR if placed on their forehead the vampire stops moving completely.
Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, im at work right now and tryin to type this all out as quickly as possible because my lunch break is in 4 minutes! WOOT!
Anyways please feel free to ask questions.

Don't mind me, but is Cryptozoology the right place to post stuff about vampires?
The definition of cryptozoology given by Bernhard Heuvelmans, and he knew a thing or two on the subject, is: 'The scientific study of hidden animals, i.e., of still unknown animal forms about which only testimonial and circumstantial evidence is available, or material evidence considered insufficient by some' (
Cryptozoology A to Z - The encyclopedia of Loch Monsters, Sasquatch, Chupacabrs an Other Authentic Mysteries of Nature - By Loren Coleman & Jerome Clark)
In my opinion vampires don't fit into this category. They should be placed with paranormal or mysteries perhaps.
But te be on-topic again. Just took a quick look in my archive and came up with this:
QUOTE
Kuang-shi - A Chinese vampire, caused by the demonic possession of a recently
deceased corpse. Said to have a terrifying appearance, as it matures it gains new
skills, the older among them are rumored to have the ability to fly.

I am pretty sure I saw a film with one of those vampires you describe. It was comedy for the most part and the vampire was hopping instead of walking. The film had to do with a plane with such a vampire crashing somewhere in Africa. A very odd film indeed it was but all you describe was in it.

I don't know if any of you think vampires really exist, I don't, but I was wondering if anyone has ever got hold of a picture of an alledged real vampire? Not some gothic chick dressed up like one, when I want that I'll look around at school...
I mean, all the monsters and ghosts have been photographed at least once. So there must be some photos around which are said to be of true vampires.
And yes, the legend says they have no reflection in the mirror. But if a human eye can see them, then a camera-lens can too.

I'm not really interested in vampires. My field is cryptozoology and as I already said I don't count vampires into that.
I'm just interested in the existence of a photo of a possible vampire (and not the bat).

ok. i am lost why are we talking about Vampires on this form?but since we are if i had to meet a vampire, i guess a chinese vimpire would be the best out of the bunch, at least they can't see you and i do not need to carry a cross or stake,

Vampires are probably covered in the Myth section.

Jun 27 2005, 04:56 PM
That's what I said in my first post.
But then again, according to some people vampires are a different form of humans. So are orang pendek, hairy pygmies and neanderthals and all these are covered by cryptozoology.
But in my opinion vampires aren't of cryptozoological interest

I agree but they still have a place here under the Myths so it is still in the right section. Back on topic.

By definition a vampire is one who drinks blood, correct? So anyone who drinks blood is therefore by default a vampire. Well aren't there many people who do that? They make blood sausage so why not just drink it?
I have never persanally thought about if they exsist or not i just think i would laugh if some guy/gal walked up to me with big teeth talking about "i want to suck your blood!!!"

Yeah there are quite a few chinese vampire movies that are comedies. In the movies chinese vampires who aren't that hardcore yet hope around, but once they start gaining power they can run around and kick a lil butt.

As far as I am aware there is no real section for animals on UM most of them are posted here even if they have no Cryto link, for example the Guant squid is not a cryto or Alien big cats, so them and others have settled with a place in this section, more often than not most people that are intersted in Crypto have an interest in these type of animlas anyway.

For plain info on animals there's no section here indeed, but cryptozoology is about animals... Hope you get what I mean finally.
And ABC's and Giant Squids are a very big issue in the cryptozoological community and many consider them cryptids (specially ABC's). So I wouldn't say that they have no crypto-link.

Vlad Dracul. He was king in Romania (transylvania) and was called Dracula because his father's name was Dracul. Dracula means 'son of Dracul'.
He was a very gruesome king who liked to impale his opponents (or just ordinary people) and dine among the stakes with their heads on them. It is told that he even cut open the stomach of a young servant because she said to be pregnant of his child. He wanted to see that child, so he cut her open. But the rulers of Austria-Hungary kept him in place because he always seemed to be able to defeat the Turks who wanted to invade the great Austrian-Hungarian empire. He managed to scare the Turkish soldiers, who some say had more courage than the Vikings, and chase them of.
After killing a Christian monk for lying to him, the rulers of the empire thought it was enough and had him imprisoned. After his release it is said that he turned into a real samaritan.
But how much of this story is true I don't know. The facts say that there was a Vlad Dracul, but he wasn't a count, he was a king. And he did manage to defeat the Turks and chase them out of Romania, which was part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire in those days.

N-droe, i heard about that too. Just to add a bit to that info you gave i heard The turks were that came over to take over his land were greeted by a huge field of bodies impaled on stakes, like 100's of them. After the turks strolled up in his 'hood and saw all these bodies impaled, they bricked it and left.. i would...

I think the original vampires name is Dracul and the 'A' on the end means son of. Dracula basically means son of dracul.
I wonder if Draculaaaaa means son of son of son of son of son of dracul?
N-droe
Jun 29 2005, 04:55 PM
I bet it does

According to my sources, Dracula was the original vampire (well, the dude the vampiremyth was based on). His dad was Dracul and Dracula indeed means 'son of Dracul' (déja vu, I feel I told this already

)
His father, mister Dracul, wasn't a vampire according to the myth. Just Dracula was a vampire.
There are a few myths about how he became a vampire.
- He made a pact with the Devil to give him the power to defeat the Turks.
- He died and didn't go to heaven because of the evil deeds during his life and satan sent him back to earth to do his bidding there.
- He was so intensly evil that he just couldn't die. His spirit kept roaming around (there are different types of vampires described and one of them is some sort of spirit which drains the life-force out of humans).
And I bet there are more different versions that I haven't heard of yet.

Dracul actually means dragon. The dragon was the familiy banner of Vlad the impaler. However, dracul happens to have 2 meanings:dragon and devil.
Dracula is propably the latinification of the word dracul(which was used as devil in this case).

Jun 30 2005, 08:03 AM
Well that's why I get different versions on the origins of the name Dracula.
So it means 'son of dracul' and 'son of the devil' (makes kinda sense).
And your right about the fact that it means dragon.

Yeah, I Know a bit about theese Chinese Vampire things, they dont feed on blood they feed on our Qi(chi) our life force. yes, they are blind but if they get enough qi they gain sight and speech capabilities. if they drain all your qi you become one of them. Freaked out yet? the only way to destroy it is to take its left sock, put a mushroom in it and hurl it into a river before the sunrise of the night you lost your qi.(by the way if you do this you get your qi back) and they cant cross running water also.
