How hard is it to move there and work? Im in the construction trade...is it all based on the need for your profession and how much money you have saved?

Just in case she doesn't see this thread, cat, Kismit lives in New Zealand, you might want to IM her and ask for her opinoin. Alternately, you could try contacting various government agencies in New Zealand for economic and business forecasts and trends to familiarize yourself with the possibilities.

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier.
New Zealand's immigration policies are different for each country so you wil have to check with an embassy or other authority on the matter. However becasue of the population boom that is effecting N.Z. at the moment we need all the tradesman we can find. Also new tax payers are highly sort after so I doubt it will be too much of a problem.

I am aware that American's require work visa's but I don't know what the qualifications are for getting one or how long they last.

yep.. the best bet is to get in contact with a govt agency to see what your chances are on obtaining a work visa, and all the related papers etc.. alternately, check if there are any agencies online advertising any jobs that are going in that field..

nz has pretty strict quarantine issues too, so be careful what you are bringing across so that you dont get any fines or the like.

good luck to you.. nz is a lovely place, i cant wait to go back there and instill a bit of craziness to the country
