Athletes insured for Nessie swim
Triathlon competitors are to be insured for £1m in case they are injured by the Loch Ness monster.
Insurance company NIG is providing cover for more than 100 athletes taking part in the VisitScotland Adventure Triathlon on 23 July.

Competitors will have to swim two laps of Urquhart Bay, the scene of many "sightings" of Nessie.

The insurer conceded it was an "unusual risk" which many insurance companies would not consider.

Teams from the UK, France, South Africa, Italy and Germany are due to take part in the event, which is being organised by sports marketing agency Nova International and will be televised on Channel Five.

'Monster appetite'

Competitors face a 1,500m swim in Loch Ness, a 19km mountain bike race and an evening 10km run.

NIG's David Parker said: "From an insurance perspective, this is a very unusual risk and a lot of insurers wouldn't want to deal with it.

"We're providing up to £1m of cover in case any competitor sustains injuries that can be proven to be the result of an attack by the Loch Ness monster."

Nova director David Hart said: "These competitors will all be very psyched up and very driven so there's going to be a lot of noise and a lot of splashing going on - just the sort of thing that might annoy a prehistoric lake monster.

"Or even worse, it might give it an appetite."

this is funny cuz i work in insurance, they dont think the monster is real so their making money, but if the monster is real and someone gets hurt insurance company will exclude that(nessie) from a policy so they wont ever have to pay out agian. insurance might raise in that area.terrorisum wasnt excluded (in america) untill the WTC collapsed and nationwide ins. payed out billions o dollars.

That is just crazy!!! wouldn't they be better of taking out a life insurance policy incase of accidental death? rofl.gif Are these guys insane or just crazy?

Just out of curiosity is it normal for people to swim in the loch or is this an abnormal thing that there is no way of knowing what may happen?

If I were the proprietor of an insurance institution and people were willing to buy insurance protecting them from Bigfoot while camping in the US, I would sell it. And then I would attempt to up-sell the policies as much as I could. That's just easy money. Even if I consider the minute possibility that these creatures do in fact, exist; the probability of my firm making money far outweighs the possibility of a pay-out. Just thinking out loud from a business person's perspective. happy.gif

Not sure what the policies(insurance) costs but if all the swimers had this policie, all at once claim cramp! I thought I saw Nessie, well that insurance company might be in trouble. Wait..........wait ............... ok who would win the case? the winner would prove nessie is real !

Accourding to Law? w00t.gif

Yes they're making a quick buck, but if someone was proven to be attacked by nessie imagine the publicity they'd get being attached to the whole thing.

As usual the insurance company is in a win/ win situation.

If that was the outcome of this, the law deciding the claim would be giving leagal proof that nessie is real. The proof of an attack would have to be 101 % true, I can't see that happening anytime soon. original.gif

I apolagize, after reading my post it is a win / win situation for the insurance companys blush.gif My bad

Big money maker for insurance companies, either way.

I guess if some people get insurance in case they get abducted by aliens why wouldn't they get insurance for Loch Ness attacks. Ha ha ha! What is this world coming to? grin2.gif

You can get insurance on anything. Doesn't like Jennifer Lopez have insurance on her ass or something. It's ridiculous.
