I have been keeping up with this so as to get to the bottom of it...looks like they did lie now...so now we ask...was it on purpose? Her captors told her that the Americans"(whoever that means...probably the WH) did not want her to leave...appearantly....the whole affair was coordinated with proper authorities.

Freed Italian Hostage's Story. Italian journalist and former hostage Giuliana
Sgrena...

The Army has finished an investigation, but the report isn’t expected until the end of the week. The Pentagon declined to talk with 60 Minutes Wednesday, but the Army issued this statement on the night of the shooting: “Vehicle traveling at high speed refused to stop at a check point.” [The soldiers] “attempted to warn the driver to stop by hand and arm signals, flashing white lights, and firing warning shots…when the driver didn’t stop the soldiers shot into the engine block which stopped the vehicle.”

"I think that is a lie," says Sgrena.

"Let's take this piece by piece," says Pelley. "Vehicle was speeding."

"No," says Sgrena.

"Attempted to warn the driver by hand signals," says Pelley.

"No," says Sgrena.

"Arm signals. Flashing white lights," says Pelley. "Firing warning shots."

"Nothing at all," says Sgrena.

"What you’re saying in this interview is that none of those things happened?" asks Pelley.

"Nothing. No," says Sgrena. "I'm sure."

wow there we have it folks, case closed the Army lied:)

so i must ask, why shoot at the vehicle if they weren't going to fnish the job?

In other words you think they just "over-reacted" and f@#ed up? I don't know why they wouldn't finish the job.

Bathory...do you remember the incident with the tank and the army shot those journalists? The army said they were recieving fire and the journalists said they never heard anything...the shot hit them dead on...killing at least one.

Ever heard of "black" humor? If you were a soldier and didn't like some no-war journalist...you could probably take a few shots at'em and get away with it...all those red-cross workers in Afghanistan...they dropped a damned bomb on red-cross workers H.Q. How about the Canadian journalists that were killed...again, they were anti-war.

There seems to be a lot of liberal anti-war journalists and workers dying...why? Because they tell a different story? Perhaps.

It couldn't be that it is a high rate car bombed area with soldiers thinking to protect their units and themselves from a speeding car that could be packed with a bomb to splatter their bodies 200 feet in the air?

This anti-war commie of a journalist isn't the only car in Iraq to be shot at and people killed. It happens to all cars that refuse to slow down and not follow check point guildlines.

Well... in fact she is a communist and the Army will shoot at a threat. You don't let a potential car bomb to enter your zone and put your unit and yourself in danger. If they hadn't been speeding and had followed the directions of the soldiers at the checkpoint there would not have been a problem. They choose to speed and to ignore the warnings.

so what you are trying to say is that some soldier thought it would be 'funny' to shoot out the engine block of the car? remember they didn't know she was coming, so any motive that directly relates to who she is gets thrown out the window.

operative word SEEMS
unless you can provide a list of pro-war journalists in Iraq and how many have been killed, your claim really means nothing. This is a warzone, these journalists/workers are getting into the thick of things, regardless of their political leanings things are going to happen. If it was an intentional targetting, whoever was in charge was an idiot for letting her get away alive.
