Lately we've been having a TON of huge storms lately, lots of power loss going on... I live in Michigan and its almost like we're having Florida weather, a huge storm a day and hot inbetween.

I love thunderstorms, and especially falling asleep to them at night... its a perfect lullaby. I know I might be retarded, but I have always wanted to see lighting strike... but I never have.

Has anyone had any reall y cool storm stories that they'd like to share?

I was in a Typhoon once, it was Typhoon Yancy for anyone who lives in the Pacific, they might remember. It hit the Island of Okinawa(where I lived) around the same as Hurricane Andrew here in the states. It was huge, but because the buildings are built to withstand it over there, there was minimal damage. It was so awesome, I saw a car blown accross a parkinglot from our fifth floor apartment!

Man I just love the raw power of nature... it's never to be messed with!

I hear that; I am right below you and we have been getting spanked by storms.

Here is a pic I snapped the other day at the lake.

Yeah tell me about it Florioda. I went through Charlie, Gene, and Francis. It destroyed my home(not beyond repair) But we didn't have power for weeks. We would wash outside in the pitcher pump water. bathing suits on. No nudity. Well yeah we put up some plastic and got nude then. We were cooking on the camp stove everyday. We had a generator enough to supply to a fan, tv,and cell phone charger.

They would give out bottled water and ice at numerous places in town. We were in the middle of the eye at one point during Charlie and saw the tree ripped up out the ground. Awful my daughter was scared and wanted to play.

Thunderstorms are amazing to watch and hear. Aslong as the lightening doesnt get too close to me original.gif

Right behind my apartment building there is an extremily tall radio tower, so its pretty predictable that every time we get a storm I'll be safe where I live, lighting always strikes that instead.... I really want to see lighting strike a tree tho... I dunno why. I do love the sound the lightning makes as it travels up the cable supports to the top of the tower... We figured this out one day because we could hear the lightning actually go UP the supports... it boggled my mind. I always thought that lightning went down, but I guess thinking back to physics classes, it really meets somewhere in the middle between the earth and the sky.

Anyone else have cool pictures of lightning or storms?

an ex bf in hs had lightning strike his truck. It went BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. He said he almost had an accident. I was glad I wasn't with him at the time.

Same thing is happening in Wisconsin also, Bizeebutt. It is pretty sweet though... I really don't ever remember this many storms so close together.

I know its really wierd... it really is like FL weather here, 80 in the mornings and afternoons, then a huge storm around four in the afternoon (maybe later) and then it clears up again to reveal another perfect sky. these storms seem to come out of nowhere, take everyone by surprise, then leave as quickly as they came.

I started this thread earlier today as we were getting a HUGE storm... BUCKETS of water. but now, as I look out the window, the sky is clear, its sunny and it looks warm again. *sheesh*

oh.. and I LOVE the smell of Ozone before it rains!!

For New Year's 2004, we were staying at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, for about a week. While we were there, we got snowed in by this crazy blizzard that was going on. If we wanted food, we had to go as fast as we could across the street to a gas station. We stayed in watching wrestling because nothing else was on. It was fun.
Steeler Mania
Then there is Ohio....I am a storm watcher for EMA. I have seen many storms that were predicted to be severe, only to fall apart by the time they reached my site.
Furthermore, I have seen many Tornadoes form....early stages, only to move into the next county.
As far as severity goes, I see an increase in storms, violency and frequency.
Global warming? Maybe we are not far from the senario of "Day after Tommorow".
In short, storm chasing is a hobby of mine, I know what to look for and what not to relay. Many mistake cloud formations as twisters, but in realality are only gust fronts. thumbsup.gif

Wow 101, you must be in Punta Gorda, you guys really got slammed. I am in Bonita Springs. I watched Charlie at a friend’s house in Lehigh. Even that far from the center it was most impressive. We had a safe room all set up, but we were so enthralled with the storm we sat by the window and drank tequila. Definitely a no no. I don't know pine trees could bend like that.
Looks like Dennis is going to miss us but I can hear the thunder from the storm. People think I am nuts but I think the thunder from a hurricane sounds different from a regular storm. It is longer and has a vibration to it I can't explain. I suppose it is because hurricane is a Native American word for a God. He was the God of the storms.

A couple of years ago in New Jersey, we had a decent sized tornado (very rare here!) It was scary as heck. About 40% of the trees in its path were just sheared off and twisted and fallen about 15 feet up. Our screens blew out and it was so loud I couldn't hear my son screaming next to me. It bent street signs over and ripped the roof completely off a local car dealership.

I live in Kentucky despite what I tell any of you and, I saw the scariest clouds of my life like 2 months ago... I could see little balls of clouds go down, break apart and swirl up into the clouds, 'Twas weird. More recient there was a severe line shooting through and I thought it would be huge but it only had max. winds of about 45-50 MPH. The biggest I've ever seen (hail) was golfball sized, and another time the winds were about 65 MPH sustained, and back to the original, the rain dropped at 3 Inches Per Hour for like 2 hours...

Are you sure that pic is not photoshopped? It looks unreal.
Bizeebutt
I dunno if its photoshopped or not... Its just an awesome picture. If its real, its only showing the awesome power of nature original.gif

PS: we seem to have lost our Florida weather... our recent line of storms and heat have vanished for a period, its only really humid now with mediochre temps. crying.gif

not every cool picture is photoshoped, sometimes people do take good pictures. Just depends on your location, righht place, right time. sure you've heard that before. i've seen lots of photos of lighting stikes and damn they are cool. i've only seen lighting stike the ground and water.

Oh man, right now outside the strongest most crazy Thunderstorn i have ever seen is raging on. Constant thunder booming right over my head, dazzling lightning every 3 or 4 seconds ripping open the night sky. Rain smashing against the windows in a frenzy of rage. The power is out here, i'm on a generator at work. Apparently it's out in sectors all over the city. It's AWESOME i love thunder storms!!

Alright, this was 4 or so years ago when we were driving in Nebraska, in the flatter part of the state. It was really late at night because we were trying to make good time on our trip. The WHOLE night it was raging lightning and thunder storms like I had never seen before. One bolt of lightning would branch our and travel it seemed forever in a flash of light. The thunder was powerful enough to rattle my insides like a huge firework on the 4th of July. It was probably the best storm I had ever seened in my life. A night I will never forget. original.gif

That does sound amazing.
I'm just dying to get off work and go wonder about in this storm. laugh.gif I have to walk for 5 or 10 mins to the bus stop anyway. But i really wish i was wearing more than a t-shirt. hmm.gif

I'm a distance runner and one time I ended up like ten miles away from my house and still had to run back, when the biggest darkest cloud I've ever seen came over the horizon! blink.gif I immediately began to run back towards home, but the storm reached me in this big forest about halfway back..

Being in the woods during a massive thunderstorm is amazing, let me tell you. The trees protected me from the crazy wind, but it was definately scary; VERY dark out and the all the thunder crackled tremendously loud right overhead! yes.gif Luckily it was very warm out and the rain felt good. I was utterly drenched.
Paranoid Android
I don't get much in the way of crazy storms out where I live. It's very sheltered.

But there was an incident about a year ago during a particularly heavy rain. I was sitting on my verrandah watching, when BOOM - the street right outside my house was struck with a bolt of lightning. Fiery sparks showered upward and my vision was slightly blurred. IT WAS AWESOME.

My brother has always wanted to be struck by lightning. I thought it would be cool too, until I saw the force of one of those bolts up close.

Ah well, I still love thunder storms, they're great.

Burnside, I know you've seen this as it's in both of our blogs but I thought I would share with the rest of the class.

So I had a lovely day at the lake. The sun was shining and breeze was blowing and the water was perfect for swimming. We ate steaks cooked on the grill and drank ice cold beer. After a nice lunch we took the boat out for a little troll about nine miles up the lake. We turned to head back to the pier just in time to see huge thunder heads rolling over the tree line South-west of us. Captain bill hit the throttles at once and we hauled ass towards safety. I was riding shot gun helping scope for skiers and tubers while my older sister played goalie aft, catching every item the wind caught and blew her way! (Good job, sis!) Somehow we beat the squall line back to the safety of our marina, barely. As we waited in line with dozens of boats for the safety of our slip this is what we saw pass us less than a mile away......

I have some great video footage but am unsure how to host it..... A neighbor of ours actually was caught in that mess in the middle of the lake. His canopy was completely destroyed; what did not sink was riped to shreds. He also lost his anchor when the chain snapped. He and his boat mates were lucky not to be hurt.

Ah, another great day for boating! Regardless, the weather cleared in time for a wonderful fireworks display. thumbsup.gif

I remember being at my uncle's sheep ranch in Vanderhoof, BC. He had a log cabin on the land. I was alone during this wicked thunderstorm. The lightening was spectacular over the mountains. It was chilly in the cabin so I made myself some hot iced tea, and put a shot of apricot brandy in it. While sipping it in front of the fireplace, the window flew open, and a moose stuck his head in.

I was dumbstruck. Didn't know what to do at the time. The moose just looked at me, removed its head, and left.

It was definately a storm to remember. original.gif

I love thunderstorms(getting ready for one now...weather says we are due one and everyone getting all sticky and sweaty says so as well)...but we don't get that many here and when we do,we have a few claps and thats it...I want a huge one to go on all night...that would be fantastic.

So you did Biz.
I'll go ahead and merge the topics. original.gif

I got stuck in a storm while driving yesterday... there I am going 70 ( yes, we are lucky here in Michigan tongue.gif ) and all of a sudden nothing but break lights in front of me... huge pile up... for no apparent reason. then, all of a sudden, it hit. Visibility was reduced to about one car length... it flooded just about every street around me, and cars driving in the flooded lanes kicked up rooster tails about 20 feet.... it was rediculous!

I actually got to see lighting strike in two places each about a mile apart from one another... it was awesome!

it lasted about an hour.. and I talked to a friend of mine who lives about four miles from me, and he didn't even get a drop of rain. blink.gif wierd stuff
