The Dripping Tap, Drip... Drip... Drip...
There once was a woman who lived all alone, except for the company of her beloved canine friend. Every night the dog would curl up in his basket beside his bed where he slept, and every night the dog would lick her hand to say goodnight.
One night, she woke up in the middle of the night to hear a "drip...drip...drip..." sound coming from somewhere in the house. She got out of bed, and went into the kitchen where she tightened the tap. Then she went back to bed, the dog licked her hand goodnight and she went back to sleep.
Another hour later she woke up again and once again she heard the consistent "drip...drip...drip" sound. She got out of bed and this time went into the bathroom where she tightened the tap. After feeling that this time she had done the trick she went back to bed, received a lick on the hand and went to sleep.
The next time she woke up, morning had dawned. She got out of bed, and made her way to the bathroom. Although when she entered the bathroom, she was greeted by a shocking sight. Her dog was hanging from the shower curtain, and it's blood was still going "drip...drip....drip...."

Now the second post makes this legend WAY scarier. I'm going to go look around the house now.

OK, the first part and the bit nick_fury added are two different Urban Legends. Both have been around for so long. As a young kid, my friends would tell me the 'Drip Drip' one, I am sure you have all heard it when you were young too?
In my opinion, it is just a daft, far-fetched story.

I thought they were the same legends.
The version I've always told and been told has "Who licked your hand?" written in blood in the bathroom.

so who was licking her hand? the one that killed her dog?

Jul 11 2005, 03:15 AM
Yes Firien. >/ There's another version too where her sister goes to a party and someone comes in and crashes the house and stuff. Eh it's hard to explain, I'll look for it on snopes, I know I have it in one of my books somewhere too.

That's what I thought, Firien.
And that would be why that story is so creepy.

ooooh i love that legend, one of my all tiem favourites, there's a variation with the room mate knocking on the door and it says 'aren't you glad you didn't open the door' of course those are blatantly fake, but entertaining nonetheless

I heard another version of this story on this cartoon back a few months ago on YTV but instead of a old woman it was a young teenager. And instead of the dog been hanged it was stuck in the basement. I'm amazed that just one urban legend can have more varasions of it.

Well, as things get told from person to person, people do change details. It is like a chinese whispers effect.

Well, what ever the variation. It's still creepy and is great to use for scaring the crap out of your friends.

So what was actually dripping then?

In the dog one, it was the dog's blood dripping. It was strung up in the shower.

I've heard this one. Totally unbelieveable IMO. Dog's tongues are different feeling then humans, different sizes, and unless the guy under the bed could see in the dark, he might have bumped his nose/face into the hand, because dogs have the nifty snout/muzzle/etc which is good for licking at a distance!

I had an urban legends book that has like the ulimate version of this story. I'd like to type it out, but I can't seem to find the book, so I'll try to do it from memory.
A girl and her sister are at home, while their parents are out at a party. The younger sister, Jo has the flu and is in bed. Her older sister, Jane is getting ready to go out with her boyfriend. We'll call him Larry. And we'll pretend the dog's name is Fred.
"Are you sure you're going to be ok?" asked Jane.
"Yeah. I'll probably just sleep all night. Besides, I have Fred to keep me company."
"Ok then. I'll be downstairs waiting for Larry to pick me up."
Jane left her sister's room, and closed the door on her way out.
After a few minutes, Jo heard someone banging on the door. She heard the door open, and close. She assumed it was Larry, and she fell asleep to her dog, under her bed licking her hand.
A few hours later, Jo woke up, went to the bathroom, then back to bed. She let her hand hang off the bed so Fred could lick it. After she had dozed off for a bit, she was woken by the ringing of her phone.
"Hello?" Jo said into the receiver."Jo? It's Larry. Is Jane there?"
"No. I thought she was out with you."
"I can't come to pick her up. I've been trying to call your house all night, but the phone's been busy."
"What's the matter?"
"The roads are all blocked off. A bunch of lunatics escaped from a mental institution."All of a sudden, Jo heard a loud racket coming from downstairs. She then heard someone pick up the phone and heard heavy breathing.
"Jo, is that you?" asked Larry.
"No. I think someone's in the house."
"Don't panic. I'll call 9-1-1."
"Please hurry."
After Larry hung up, Jo jumped out of bed and locked her door. She then searched her room for any weapon she could find, but all she found was a letter opener. She got back in bed and waited for Larry to call back.
After a few minutes, Jo heard something outside of her door. Her heart froze. Someone was coming up the stairs! After what seemed like minutes, she heard the person just a few feet from her door. She grabbed the letter opener, and flung the door open only to see her badly injured, but still-alive sister lying on the floor.
"Oh my God, Jane. What happened?"
But before Jane could respond, Jo heard banging on the door, and noticed the blue and red flashing lights glowing through the windows.
"The police are here! Wait here."
Jo ran downstairs and opened the door to see Larry and a few policemen.
"Is everything alright, miss?" asked the cop.
"Where's Jane?" asked Larry.
"She's upstairs. She's badly injured, but she's still alive." Jo told them.
"I'm okay." said Jane who had just managed to walk down the stairs.
"Sir?" said one of the cops. "We found something behind the couch."
"What is it?" Jo asked.
"You shouldn't look." responded the cop.
Jo looked anyway, and let out a scream. Her dog was behind the couch, beaten to death.
"But that's impossible." said Jo "He's been upstairs, under my bed, licking my hand all night."
The cop looked at his men and signaled at the stairs and said, "Humans can lick too."
