I'd have to agree with a lot of that.

They can and they can't... At the end of the day it depends on the script and the director like it does with any movie be it original, book adaptation, tv show adaptation or video game adaptation...

A lot of the time, it also falls on the producers of such movies who think they can make big money by getting the rights to a popular TV show and just cos of the name people will flock to see it and they don't have to spend lots on getting a reallt good script and stuff... Take video game adaptations for instance, so far they have all been pretty sub par, although for what it was I actually enjoy(ed) Super Mario Bros and it's because producers don't take the games seriously and as stated above they think they can do little and get a lot in return... If a studio would come along and actually make one decent video game movie and everyone sees it do really well then other decent game movies will follow as people try to cash in on the trend. Halo could be the movie to kick off the trend of decent game movies but even that could go tits up.

Anyway back on topic... I actually liked Lost in Space and Starsky and Hutch and would even like to see sequels to both of them. I also think that Dukes of Hazzard looks alright too... But I've never seen any of the original shows so that could be a contributing factor to my enjoyment of them.

I guess a lot of it comes down to the approach they take with the movies... Do they go the parody route, do they make it less spoofish and more just a serious comedy or an serious drama/action movie? Starsky and Hutch probably would have been better had they gone for a more serious, maybe even grittier approach as could Lost in Space... But as light hearted popcorn flicks go I think they turned out alright, whether they disgrace their original versions I can't say.

The new Miami Vice movie looks like it could be really good... It's kept it's more serious tone like the show but has gone a bit more grittier and it has Jamie Foxx (a little overated) and Colin Farrell and is directed by Michael Mann (Collateral) it just screams awesome movie! whether it will be or not remains to be seen but it has the chance to be one of the best adaptations so far...

As for The A-Team, Munsters etc... thumbs down... Munsters could work as a summer comedy but it will depend heavily on the cast and the main plot. I'm hoping that the rumoured Stargate SG1 movie based on the tv show happens though.
