Stonehenge is a massive fertility symbol, according to Canadian researchers who believe they have finally cracked the mystery of the ancient monument. In the arrangement of the stones, the researchers say they have spotted the original design: female genitalia.

The theory is laid out in a paper entitled "Stonehenge: a view from medicine" in the July issue of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. "To the builders of the henge, the most critical events in life were birth and death," Anthony Perks, a retired professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of British Columbia, wrote in the paper.

Oh God I hope this isn't true.

I took my great aunt to see stonehenge about 10 years ago. She'd be mortified to discover that she took a whole albums worth of photographs of her favourite great-nephew standing in front of an enormous female groin.

Ye Gods, I think she might have touched it.

ya, but this guy obviously has female anatomy on the brain... come on, he is an OB/GYN original.gif

as someone with an extensive art history background, i believe he is wrong. ive seen the stuff the pre-historics made representing vulvas and they look just like vulvas. they adored vulvas, and breasts, and female forms in general. the oldest sculpture known to mankind was a small sculpture of a nude woman with child- it was quite obvious too. i doubt our pre-historic ancestors would create a vulva through an abstract sculptural representation. we just started representing things abstractly in art within the last 200 years or so.

I think it's stones in a circle.

I think people read WAY too much into EVERYTHING. Especially anything having to do with art of any kind. I was exposed to way too much of this in art school. If I hear one more thing about vaginas, i'm going to scream. (I went to school with too many hard core feminists...to them, everything was about vaginas)

You have to be kidding me?! Why would they use something so abstract to represent a vulva?! It's a bunch of rocks put there to make us wonder what the heck they were!
