TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) -- Their weird glowing green color makes them look like they've been swimming in a nuclear plant's spent fuel pond. But the zebra fish on sale in Taipei shops have an even stranger background: They're the latest in genetically modified fish, and their bodies contain DNA from jellyfish, which makes them shimmer in the dark.

Shopkeepers call them "Night Pearls." Some have nicknamed them "Frankenfish." Their makers at the Taipei-based Taikong Corp. use the less catchy name of "TK-1" and say they are the world's first genetically engineered fluorescent fish.

Now have they been tweaked to where they can't pass this new trait down to offspring? Imagine setting a few of these free to roam and reproduc in the wild. It doesn't sound like a healthy thing for nature.

Schadaeux,

I've taken the image out of your post there, as there's currenty a bug with the way images are displayed on the front page column.

One of the things that will be included with the upcoming site updates is a way to correctly integrate images into news articles on the column.

Good article though, fluorescent fish - there's a novelty. grin2.gif

It's kind of frightening, isn't it - the way we can manipulate nature for our own ends.

I mean,

they are the world's first genetically engineered fluorescent fish.
.

What's next?

The world's first genetically engineered fish that swims backwards?
The world's first genetically engineered fish that explodes when exposed to lemons?
The world's first genetically engineered fish that can leap through a flaming hoop, ladies and gentlemen, perform a triple somersault and land in a eggcup full of hydrochloric acid?

If you ask me, this fiddling with nature for our own amusement ill behooves us and will only end in madness.

i wish I could genetically engineer myself to glow in the dark. Then I wouldn't miss the toilet at night.
Aslan
It wouldn't surprise me if somebody's grandchildren actually were genetically engineered to glow in the dark. I know know why people say they would like to live to a thousand years to see how the future turns out. The future looks nothing but dreadful to me.

dust19
yeah, just the last 5 years have been downhill. 100 seems downright scary. There are only 2 things the future holds that I am looking forward to.

1.) Hopefully truth about non-earth life

2.) Advances in virtual Reality

Because of the whole scary future thing, My fiancee and I have decided against having children. Why put them through that?
Aslan
I once read somewhere that our ceaseless f****ing up of the world was not so much our ignorance, lust for money, carelessness and ignorance so much as it was a pre-emptive strike on our thankless offspring.

So when my grandchildren say to me 'you're nothing but a washed-up old git with no friends and a terminal flatulence problem,' I can say to them 'Maybe, son, but don't forget to take your oxygen mask and asbestos suit when you go to the beach, hehehe.'

And deciding not to have kids because of what the future holds really is indicative of what a royal mess we're making of everything. I mean, somebody's got to be around to clean it all up; we're patently incapable.
dust19
Well, I think that alot of us really are capable, Just not the ones in charge.

Yes the world is f***ed up, and I'd like to think that our children will have the brains enough to reverse the trend, but didn't our grandparents say the same thing?
dust19
and I'd like to add....

That auto swear censoring is a sweet little deal!
Aslan
Fair enough.
dust19
yes let's go to the fair. I bet they have balloons. They float. And if you come down here, you'll float too! We all float down here!
Mentalcase
Aslan and Dust19,

Why reply to a topic with nonsense?

Please just keep down the "vulgar" language (even if you censor it, it is kinda pointless.)

MC

Aslan
Apologies. Got carried away there.
dust19
umm yeah,

it kinda turned into a joke there. Pointless yes.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I still have quite a bit of hope left for mankind. People have been saying civilization is going down the toilet since civilization began, and we haven't gone hurtling down the drain yet. Matter of fact, hope is the only reason most of us bother staying alive at all, that or spite, depending on what mood I'm in. Okay, that was way off topic, but hey, you know.

Glowing fish? I've got a UFO thing that spins around and lights up, it's the same effect, plus I won't find it floating belly up a week after buying the thing. laugh.gif
