"Fishermen who hauled in a massive 1,100 pound tiger shark off Massachusetts this past weekend failed to capture first place in the monster shark derby on Martha's Vineyard.
The reason: The boat was six minutes too late in returning to Oak Bluffs harbor with its catch.
The toothy tiger shark may not have won the competition, but it did win the admiration of other fishermen. Steven James of the Boston Big Game Fishing Club said this truly was a monster shark, and one that "could eat you.""
i'm not expert on sizes of sharks, but this looks to be a big one, although i had no idea about these fishing competitions, are tiger sharks not protected?

I am not sure if they are still protected but they were at one time. As for the size... yeah it is a big one.

What a waste they killed a shark for nothing.
It's sad that humans must hunt animals for sport. If where going to hunt for sport at least we should make it fair, like use no high end human technology, only use your bare hands or whatever you can build with your hands (knife, spear, bow and arrow etc) and natures elements.

Hunting animals doesn't impress me when tools and gadgets are used. If that guy jumped off the boat and beat the shark into submission with his bare hands. I would be slightly more impressed. Or even if he speared it only using the strength of his arms. Anyone can shoot a gun. Hunting should be done "mano y mano."
None the less, That is a big shark.

A good point, however if a Tiger Shark is protected they are in violation either way. It is like calling a human hunt. Hipathetically, we are protected because murder is murder... so what you are saying is that if it is a human hunt, it is ok?

I don't think has changed into an animal rights club, people are just expressing their opinions, don't people have the right to feel sorry for this shark and probably in the same way as they would if they dragged Bigfoot out dead.

The comment of Jaws was probably made in relation to the size of the shark.
When jaws first came out a lot of people laughed at how oversized the shark was, never believing such a creature could be out there swimming with them.

Sharks are apex predators and deserve better treatment. If that say a dolphin, people would be goin mad coz dolphins are cute and marketable by us.
Sharks tend to only kill us and thats all ignorant people think they do.
Yet its like killing the grass so cows cant eat. Sharks are needed for the food web to function.

The equipment used today IS part of the natural world. Just because you use steel and complex devices that does not make it magical or something. Technology is still usuing the laws that define the natural world. Using spear and knives is just as technological as a boat harpoon or a missile even.

Why people think that this is acceptable exactly? Wrestling with animals is not exactly in their everyday routines either. Go there to hussle them because you feel like tarzan is just as bad as hunting as far as I am concerned. If you want to respect wild life then go all the way. No point in stressing innocent squirrels or give a bad meal to a shark (humans suck as food).
I find the killing or using animals for sport a bad habit as it does affect the natural balance and us in the long run. Its a major contardiction to have all that education on the environment and its inhabitants and still show no understanding in granting to other creatures the right to live, undisturbed.

Fine then Bio-Mage use whatever weapons to kill a shark but make it a fair fight. What chance did that shark have to either get away or eat one of those fishermen? 0
And define natural balance?
I've seen lions kill hyenas for fun then play around with the body, its understandable why on some level they did it, but then boast and toy with the body and make an example of the dead hyena in front of the his pack. sounds like something humans do, Natural Balance right! The predators of the wild are just as blood thirsty and sadistic as humans.

Tiger sharks are not bright orange with black stripes funnily enough...
Anyway I hate to see enormous specimens like this caught, in the long-run it will weaken the genes of the tighersharks as a whole, if many of the huge, virile bull males are killed then that means less huge sharks in future. Which sucks.

While I'm not exactly ecstatic with the fact that such a fine specimen of tiger shark was killed, I guess you'll need to define "Senseless waste" a little better for me..
I'm sure at least some of you must be aware that they didn't just leave it's body lying around..
Whoever got to keep it would probably have sold it to a Restaurant or fish market for a huge sum, and then it goes on to feed many, many people in the area..At least that's how these things usually work, so I can only assume that's how this went down..
A shame? Probably..
A waste or entirely senseless? Not really..
