At UVA, I took a class on mythology for fun (I am nuts!) and found some interesting stuff on a gal named Lilith who was here before Eve. There is a lot on here in the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Alphabet of Ben Sira, too. She has been wiped out of the classic bibles now but there are some hints she used to exist, like explaining the creation of man twice....once as man and woman equal, the second as man then woman.
It's a long story and I won't post it all but basically Lilith was a flub and didn't like the whole man is greater than woman thing and was banished from the Bible and then edited into a more serene and humble Eve who didn't mind taking a little crap in the name of the Good Book.
Anyone got some more info on this? It's a lot of fun to look at.

Lots of Lilith links

Seems unlikely that an omnipotent God couldn't create Adam a fitting wife, doesn't it? Then again, he did create *that* Tree smack bang in the middle of Eden, when he had a whole universe to place it in. Kinda seems careless, really.

*Sigh*. Got to love Genesis... innocent.gif

Thank you so much for all of the links! Could have used them a few semesters ago. I went to a couple of bookstores in Charlottesville and did a lot of research on the internet to complete the paper but have been fascinated ever since. Makes you wonder who else got dumped out of Creation!!
Maybe Lilith planted that tree on her way out the door as a big kiss my toot toot to Adam, haha.

search for the lilith thread from a few weeks ago...I think we covered just about all there is to speculate about on her.

Yes, just one of the strange acts of "God", who somehow didn't know what any parent knows: If you are sorting beans with a child around, if you tell the child to not put a bean in his/her ear, the bean is soon in the ear of the child. no.gif

I like the bit when having predictably eaten the forbidden fruit, God jumps out from behind the tree and shouts "aha gotcha" like some manic park keeper
with a guy like that around they were lucky to get thrown out before he'd resorted to booby traps. wacko.gif
"and if your ball comes over the fence i'm gonna burst it son of man !!!"

I've been only saying Lillith (backed up with links) Was a Babalonian/Sumaturan night goddess for the extended time I've been here...
