You can launch missiles with a PlayStation 2
When the PS2 debuted, there was a big hullabaloo over export laws. the machine's main processor was so advanced that it was classified as a supercomputer and there for was not something that was allowed to leave Japan. The fear was that an enterprising hacker in the third world country could harness the PS2 ability to do very fast math calulation and use it to control, say a guided missile system. Export law were changed so that the PS2 could be released worldwide. However, reports circulated that Saddam Hussein imported several dozen PS2 upon the machine launch. Were these very cool gifts for his nieces and nephews or were they intended for military purpoese? Could the PS2 really be used as part of a weapon of mass destruction? With any luck, we'll never find out.

The Government made an Arcade game that erased kids memories and gave them horrific nightmares.
There is a cryptic tale of an arcade game called POLYBIUS that appeared in only a handful of locations in portland, Oregon in the early 1980's. Credited to a company called Sinnesloschen, Polybius was an abstract puzzle game that reportedly caused nightmares and memory loss in those who played it and some supposedly swore off the game for good. And to seal the deal, one arcade owner claimed that a black-coated gentlemen would periodically come to collect deta-but not coins-from the machines. Unfortunately, the main thing that's missing is proof. While a ROM reportedly exists, it hasn't actually been located. A title screen is all anyone seems to be able to produce.

I read somewere that an older game (pre console day) was made that was used as a mind control weapon. There is actually a name and an open title shot to this game (cant remeber name) but nothing further. Inconclusive.
Out in the desert undreds of old atari 2600 games were buried when the video game market crashed. Most notably the ET movie game. They soposidly leaked and caused environmental problems and what not. Inconclusive.
There is a code to turn Lara Croft naked In Tomb Raider for ps1. True and False. There is no traditional code (ex. up down left right circle). But a device/chip could be moded to ur ps2 to accept a computer hack. I sopose gamesharks did it to but this was the first.
The mario franchise is about comunism. False but there are small similarities. Do a quick google sarch.
In the Legend of Zelda for the NES one of the dungeon layouts is in the shape of a swatstica(cant spell). It looks like one but is actually a japanese symbol.
These r off top of my head ill look around.

The Legend of Zelda! Great game! The best one is A Link to the Past for the SNES. I like old games better than the new ones.

MYTH: By completing the game 'Halo' 5 times on Legendary within 24 hours, without switching off your console, you will unlock a new ending sequence besides the bonus one.
It is false. Beleive me, I tried it myself.

Great topic.
Legend: The mystery port on the bottom of the NES was compatible with Sega cartridges:
False! But I believed it as a kid.
Another one: You can kill the dog in Duck Hunt:
False! You can shoot him, but nothing happens.
Legend: Sony originally teamed up with Nintendo to make the Nintendo Playstation:
True! although it never happened, Sony liked the idea enough to do it on their own.

No Andy r it went a little differently. Sony wanted to make a Cd ad on for the SNES called the playstation to counter Sega's add on. Nintendo decided on phillips to make it instead. Nintendo later scraped the entire idea. Philips went on to make the the phillipes CDI system still having partial rights to nintendo's games, the result was some of the worst games ever including Mario Hotel and The Legend of Zelda: The Wand of Gamalon. Sony realized that there was nothing stopping them from making there own home console.
So as we know its nintendos fault we have playstation.

Many people tend to believe that the first video game system was the atari 2600 for some reason but it isnt. The first ever was called the odessy(sp) i believe.
Mario tend to also forget that mario's first appearence was in the arcade game donkey kong. he was named jumpan then for the obvious resions.

Um... no disagreements here. I was just paraphrasing.
Back on topic- many people actually think Pong was the first video game, but the Magnavox Odessey was released earlier.
It did not sell well for many reasons. For one, nobody really knew what a video game was, and it was hard to even sell it to retailers, let alone consumers.

FYI, I have seen a screen of the Polybius, but it is the title screen. There are the words POLYBIUS in a bold green text, and in red or blue is the publisher's name. There were also like 2 in the suburb, and this was something that had to do with military and the CIA. the game's side affects: dizziness, seizures, night terrors, amnesia, insomnia. Some people actually did not suffer these affects but the game made them happy. The ROM is nothing more than the title screen that has a type of woosh sound. I do not have it and I do not want to!

are ya'll sure they Oddesy was the first console? I had one of those, but before that I had a Fairchild... this was before the Commodore VIC 20 came out... and way before atari, colleco, activision...
dang now I'm thinking of another that might even be older... was brown and had 4 controllers and was around the same time as commodore... (Edit: ok, guess it's not older than Fairchild whatever it was...)
and then I figured out how to network the commodore 64 with a timex sinclair 1000 and the world of computing took on a whole new meaning other than games... then got into BBS's... nodes hehe... and then transmitting graphics over this new internet thing, and it all went to heck after that.

The PS2 Missile story, is both true and false, one chip wouldnt do it, but if a number where coded to parallel process, then it could be possible.... or so they say.
At the time the PS2 came out though, it would have probably been cheaper to buy some old russian missiles off the black market, at least then they wouldnt have been stung by import tax

Not a myth..... just me being a geek, but most people think the first videogame was Pong in the 70s.
The 1st was actually a game called Space war that was made in 1963, on a computer called the pdp1(One of those room sized montrosities)

I once did a few searches on this, it turned out that Polybius means memory loss in the German language. Also the gme was a maze game, but in 3D with vector graphics, the game also had a very hypnosed sounds which kept it repeating itself.
Since the game was created back in the 80's, when the Berlin Wall was still active. Maybe one of the sides made this game as some kind of a weapon against some other side during the Cold War?

Odyssey is defenitly the first video game home console. The "Brown Box" doesnt count if thats what anyone is thinking because it wasnt in production.
Mario's name was jumpman because i think he was the first game character who had the ability to jump. I think.

Supposedly there was a code that let you play as the four bosses- Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison.
There was actually a game genie code that briefly showed a screen shot of someone playing as a M. Bison.
EGM used this screen shot and made up a code for their annual April Fools joke. Many many people wasted hundreds of hours trying to get it to work.

POLYBIUS, this game reminds me of an early 80's movie i watched when i was sick one day. this nerdy kid got addicted to it and would start breaking into the arcade at the mall at night to play it. i think it got to be where it would kill him if he didnt beat it. he did and the game imploded. (Also sounds like "the last starfighter")
as far as the atari 2600 E.T. games that Cadetak47 brought up, the developers were given half the time as normal to make the game, and atari actually made more copies of it then what they had made in consoles. they expected it to be a huge blockbuster, but was so bad, and due to word of mouth, that hardly any copies sold. atari took all the remaining copies to a land fill in new mexico, crushed them, and mixed them in to a giant concrete slab.

Many of these legends such as cheating aeriss death in FF7 and playable Street Fighter bosses probly started as legends but became real because of them. All you have to do is change the "sprite" i think its called. Its like putting an image over another one. People did this in Enter The Matrix to play as Neo on the PC version. Since Neo's image exists in game all u gotta do is switch it. But you still keep the same voice and moves etc.
How about a hidden sex mini game in GTA:SA? Anyone heard of that?

Streetfighter 2 and Shen Long
EGM ran an April Fools joke once saying that if you got to M Bison without losing a round and with full perfects on 7 stars then Shen Long (supposedly Ryu and Kens master) would descend from the sky and kill Bison before fighting your character....
(in super streetfighter 2 turbo the character Akuma appeared at this point in the game if you hadnt lost a round and finished every opponent with a super combo, maybe he was born from the Shen Long april fool)
....
Shen Long never appears in the official street fighter story...the trainer of Ryu and Ken is called Goitetsu iirc and he was killed by his first student Gouki (Akuma)

To the first one- completely true... G4, the extended cable gaming network, does a show called Icons where Atari reps actually admitted to it.
To the second- the swastica was originally a Buddhist symbol... flipped over... and one dungeon does have the symbol.

The sadam PS2 missle crisis is untrue. There is a mini article in this octobers Official U.S. Playstation Magazine about it.
The GTA:SA Hot Coffee Mod was going to be a real mini game but was takin out before launch ( the coding for it was broken up). When the PC version came out a German Hacker rearranged the code amd added his own (the mini game wasnt finished).
