user posted image rThe sonar scans of manmade structures one mile below water off the southeast coast of Cyprus were presented here Thursday by Robert Sarmast, head of the Cyprus/Atlantis Expedition project for the first time. Announcing the results of last year’s expedition to find one of humankind’s greatest mysteries, the legendary Atlantis, Sarmast presented three dimension underwater side-scan sonar pictures of structures 1.5 km below sea level, 80 km off the southeast coast of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean. He said it was no coincidence that his team discovered a 3km long straight wall intersected at right angles by another wall, adding that this will silence any remaining skepticism about his longstanding claims that modern Cyprus is what remains of a much larger and now partly sunken mass which fits Plato’s description of the ancient land of Atlantis. Sarmast said he is "dedicated to making this discovery a part of something that will benefit Cyprus for decades to come", and announced that he is working with the Cyprus government and has the full support of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation. In addition, he also announced a partnership with TMC Entertainment group[ (Los Angeles/USA) that will undertake a two-hour Atlantis documentary for the second expedition with the last half hour of it being a live broadcast from the ship. During the second expedition, he said, his team will lower the ROV submersibles to the wall in an effort to film it and this will be broadcast live. Sarmast said the team will do a preliminary survey of the area with the ROVs by October and probably next May will proceed with the submarines and the live broadcast.

"We pinpointed one mountain because it was such a perfect match with the Acropolis Hill as well as with the rectangular valley, the mountain and so forth. We went there, did a survey there and that’s exactly where it was and nowhere else. This can not be a coincidence'', he told reporters. He also said that no scientist can say that the formations found were natural. Invited to comment on criticism that he is an American looking for oil in the area, Sarmast said "I am an Iranian-American. The target area that we are investigating is in international waters, and if anyone wanted to look for oil, they would not do it with "our little operation. That’s ludicrous. I am not a spy, I am really looking for Atlantis''.

That maybe true, based on the data available. But equally, no scientist can say that the formations are man-made wink2.gif

I imagine now that the best possible way to answer whether these are 'man-made' or not will be to send something down there for a better look. They might just have to see if they can get the interest of Mr. Ballard to have a look.

it probably won't be man made, because why would it be a little place like that? it's probably part of a city that was torn apart by a tornado.

I'm not an Atlantis buff but I know a bit about sonar; there might be more that the scans are not revealing. The only way to really know will be if somebody goes down there to look. This might be especially true if a large part of the ruins are stone or brick. The real answers will come with inspection.

It does make me wonder what some of the different navies in the world might now about this region? As I recall, during the Cold War the United States Navy, the Soviet Navy and the Royal Navy conducted a lot of operations in and around here. Some of these operations probably involved sonar mapping. It might now have been to the degree they did it in the North Atlantic but it would still be interesting to know what they might have found.

Very, very interesting, but hardly conclusive. They're gonna need a lot more information and data to prove anything. Finding Atlantis is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Everyone thinks they've seen it, but when they actually step on it -- it's not what they thought it was. But I'm interested in Atlantis, hence my handle, however I'm not convinced yet that this is the Acropolis hillside described in Plato's dialogues. Looks like it. I'm not a scientific obverser either. I'm just a hobbiest.

No matter whether or not this is what Plato called Atlantis it seems worth investigating. Let's just hope investors and archaeologists won't back out for fear of being labelled nuts. original.gif

Really, I think it's bad PR to speak of Atlantis. Presumably, scientists, like everybody else, are afraid of ridicule, and people always seem ready to mock anyone who investigates weird stuff mad.gif .

But to find a city of Gold, silver, and Orichalcum even after being buried under water for 9000 plus years would be worth a look. But if I understand the conversion, a Greek Stadia is slightly less than a Mile, and Atlantis was 3000 Stadia long and 2000 wide. That's rather large.

Facts from the English Translation, Story of CRITIAS.

Orichalcum! Definitely! We have to check out the Orichalcum!

uh i beleive CBS news reported that Atlantis was finally confiormed real after scientist found manmade structures, and statues, on the ocean floor when searching specifically for Atlantis..this was LAST Summer or Fall...it was such an exciting thing to hear that FINALLY it had been found, but NOW we STILL have people debating its existance??...sheesh

thank you Dan Rather, and no he wasn't lying, in case anyone wants to crack a Jay Leno joke on his authenticity..

alien.gif

and by the way...Dan Rather is soooooo beautiful, even though he is 70 something, and i am male, and i am 19....strange...

and why oh why would a civilization want to build itself upon a vast area of water!?....i freak just thinking of the depths when someone falls into the dark dark deeeep waters....*cries*

so much i actually think i will cry now..WHY OH WHY, is it the allergy meds making me this loopy!??

Noe did Dan actually say they found Atlantis or just some ruins of an ancient civilisation? You got to remember Dan isn't always so good about checking his facts.

I still think we need to just go down there and check this out. We found the Titanic so why is it so hard to find a lost continent?

^^Because we knew a very close estimate to where the boat sunk.. not to mention people actually survived to tell about it. I haven't heard about any 9000 year old survivors from the lost city of Atlantis just yet lol

No big deal, I've done it too.

This brings me back something I posted on this discussion earlier. During the Cold War many of the Navies of the world quite avidly sonar mapped the bottom of the oceans. It would be interesting to know what they might have found. I wonder if anybody has thought of trying to file an FOIA request for such records?

thats what he was reporting..after a diving expedition, they found, and seen pillars and structures around the area where they suspected Atlantis once existed...

last i recall, he only got one report wrong, then everyone freaked at him, because America is conformist and thinks that a reporter who made one little mistake should be fired...its ridiculous, it doesn't mean he is purposely lying to us about everything, because he was payed to do his job or get fired...i'm sure that his boss would have fired him if he constantly lied on TV to us....conformist America needs to chill out... alien.gif

Dan Rather reported this last year, its pretty old news by now..he simply said on a segment that came on inbetween broadcasting that (using the word ATLANTIS) "Atlantis has been confirmed after manmade structures were found on the bottom of the east Mediterranean Sea"

i found a report that was simular to what he was reporting..its from CNN and posted on Blog Warriors November 2004 archives:

"An American researcher claimed Sunday to have discovered the remains of the legendary lost city of Atlantis on the bottom of the east Mediterranean Sea. But Cyprus' chief government archaeologist was skeptical.

Robert Sarmast said sonar scanning of the seabed between east Cyprus and Syria revealed man-made walls, one as long as 3 kilometers (2 miles), and trenches at a depth of 1,500 meters (1,640 yards).

"It is a miracle we found these walls as their location, and lengths match exactly the description of the acropolis of Atlantis provided by Plato in his writings," Sarmast said, referring to the ancient Greek philosopher.

"We cannot yet provide tangible proof in the form of bricks and mortar as the artifacts are still buried under several meters of sediment at a depth of 1,500 meters (1,640 yards), but the evidence is now irrefutable," he added.

Asked if the ruins could not be that of another city that sank beneath the waves, Sarmast said the remains match Plato's description of Atlantis so closely that they could not be anything else." - The Blog Warrior 2004 November

yes, that doesn't mean its yet proven, but after Dan said it had been confirmed i figured it would have mean't final result...and the report did say it looked very simular to Plato's description of it

i agree, we still should go check it out, but why are people questioning the existance of it, when there are reports and scientific discoveries, and even artifacts from these areas they are searching...one reason its hard to find a lost continant is because its UNDERWATER, covered with the dirt that flows around the ocean flow all the time, getting covered with sand and plants...and also erosion on rocks is going to change it alot...
ROGER
Finding Atlantis would be as big as the discovery of Troy. And all they had for Troy was the Greek stories of Homer. So it can happen.
