I live in tennessee. right down the road we have a cemetary called"Old Gray Cemetary". It is one of the oldest cemetaries in the surrounding areas. There is suppose to be a ghost called the woman in white that lives there. Her husband is supposedly is buried there. It has been said that if you walk through there at night she will approach you and ask if you have seen her husband. I have walked through there plenty of times during the day and saw nothing. Maybe she is just waiting for me to cross her path under the cover of darkness. ohmy.gif

Anyone seen the movie "Picnic at hanging rock?" I live about 30 mins drive from there. They say in about the 1900s or 1920s, a group of 3 or 4 girls about 16 years old walked up ther at night, never to return. NO bodies were found either. and if you go up there at night you'll see the girls standing there and so on and so forth....

That is one of my favorite films, and certainly quite creepy.
The Town in which I grew up in had a legend. It involved this strange old restaurant in what was once a residential home. The place was called Omars, and it was on the corner of an old farm road that slowy became more suburbanized as years went by. It was white with black shutters, and the first floor windows' panes had been replaced with red coke bottle glass.
There was still a rather substantial yard behind the driveway.

This place was infamous because no cars were in the driveway ever with the exception of these old trucks. Plus no one in the town ever knew anyone to have eaten there, and it seemed it was never open. In the 1960's my mother had tried to go have dinner there with her mom. They went up to the door and rang the bell. A young man in a tuxedo and well groomed hair opened the door. He had full make-up on...tweezed eyebrows , mascara, eyeliner, lipstick, the works. They asked if they could be seated for dinner. He replied, "I am sorry, we are not serving dinner today." and closed the door. So that was my mother's imput on the legend. In High School I always used to take notice of the place and we would always joke about trying to get in for food but never did. Every summer when I drove by in the early 90's (and I am not making this up) there would be rams in the back yard grazing.

Unfortunately, after being around for so long, the house is now a freaking bank.

A Weird NJ Moment or what?

I live in the Netherlands, groningen to be precies, and we have a pretty creepy Urban legend.
There used to be a wealthy man, name escapes me, who loved children.
He was a sort of real live Santa Clause you could say.
He rebuiled his home into a play castle for the kids to play in.
This went on for years when one day one of the children complained about him.
The child said he had tuched her in an sexual manner.
Well the whole town went after him and burned him alive.
While he was burning people say he uttered some words in an unknown language and died.
Preciselly one year later people started finding mutelated bodies of children, first one was the girl who complained about him.

The bodies where ripped to pieces and where missing some organs, some missed their eyes, some there hart, some there lungs, etc, etc.
People say that it was/is the spirit of the man who came back for vengeance.
This story has been going round for about 150 years here.
Some even think that the decendents of the town people are still cursed. (premature deaths, bad luck, mental illnesses)

Still creeps me out to hear the tale eventhough it probally is a tale to scare kids.

That sounds a bit like the french Gilles de Rais

I remember a story about a creature called "Red Eye" that was supposed to live in the woods of South Carolina. He was the last of some indian tribe and would attackand kill kids that went into the woods They would be found days later hanging from the trees with thier fingers and toes gnawed to th bones.

I heard this one when I was about ten. 22 years ago.

I live in a small town in England called Bury. There is a very old abandoned railway that has never been used since before I was born. Apparently, at midnight sometimes, a ghost train goes across the railway. Some people who i know say they have heard and seen the train but I never have. I hope it is true, because there is no other legend that I know of lol. If i hear of another I will post it.

MissMelsWell
We have a couple of local legends near where I live... one is the infamous Mel's Hole legend (yes, that's where my nick name came from) but it's just a legend. I grew up in that area and I'm 100% sure Mel's Hole does not exist... it's suppose to be a bottomless pit with magical properties on Manashtash Ridge in Washington state. Mel was the darling of Art Bell and Coast to Coast radio for a few years in the late 90's and early 00's.

The second legend is also known world-wide an you will hear it called "The 13 steps to Hell" or the "Maltby Cemetary". In the 1980's, it was a considered one of the most creepy places in the world. It's just a turn of the century private cemetary in semi-rural WA, at the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The legend says that the cemetary contains 13 steps inside a crypt (which no longer exists) where if you sell your soul to the devil, you will be shown the stairs to Hell. There are also reported hauntings there, and some people swear up and down that at times, the entire cemetary disappears. (It's really just very hard to find, the area used to be a jungle of trees and undergrowth)

I was one of the few people that was granted an interview with the current owners of this small private cemetary (it is NOT open to the public) and I can say with great confidence that it's just the final resting place of the family buried there. Nothing strange, no steps. Although, I know now where the legend of the steps came from.... there WERE 13 steps but they were filled in with concrete years ago... they were 13 steps in a concrete foundation that were the stairs to the root cellar of an old house. grin2.gif The crypt that used to be on the property is also now gone, it was so badly vandalized by partying kids, they had to tear the crypt down and bury these family members in unmarked graves, some were even moved to a different cemetary entirely.

The owners are nice people, I wish curious ghost hunters and vandals would leave these poor people alone. If you ever get the hankering to go there, just don't. These poor people have been through enough trying to protect their beloved ancestors final resting place.

You can still see the ghosts of japanese soldiers walking around in the plaza at night.
That's the only one I know of.

Hi guys, this is my first post on this forum, altough I have been browsing it for some time now.
I heard a lot of creepy stories in my part of the country ( Romania ), but the most interesting one is about a woman/werewolf that my grandmother used to tell it to me, and to this day, she swears it is true.

When my grandmother was a young girl, 60 years ago, in her village a black dog was biting and sucking the milk from people`s cows. And because of the bite marks, the cows would not give anymore milk. This was going one for some time, until a man and his 2 sons were hiding in the stable at night, trying to catch whatever was harming their cows ( didn`t know that it was a dog at that time). So when they heard the cows starting to scream and move around, they light up a torch and saw this small black dog that was trying to suck milk from one cow. They tried to kill the dog with some hay forks, but they only cut it very bad, but the dog ran away.
Next day, when they were telling everybody in the village that they found out that a dog was the cause for the problem with the cows, someone said that they found a woman, naked, near her house, with stab marks from a fork, in her ribs and leg. There was somekind of a doctor in the village, and he managed to fix the woman, and when they confronted her, she admitted that she would turn almost everynight in a dog and wander the woods and the village, in search of food. The people tried to help her and brought her food everyday(she was very poor, and couldn`t afford to keep animals ), also the priest was praying with her everyday.
My grandmother tells me that the next winter, the ranger saw what he thaught was a wolf trying to kill some chickens, and shot it.Also it ran away, but when the ranger followed the trail, it led to this woman, naked and shot. She died very soon afterwards.

Everybody who is 70 years + from that village swear that this story is true.Poor woman, with such a curse on her.

And then we have the usual ghost stories of mean people who died and then couldn`t get into Heaven so they haunt theur families or houses, also one about a monster that it is like a bull, lives in the woods and killed some children and even a couple of hunters. But this was probably a very large wild boar.

There's a covered bridge near my mom's house in Lancaster County, PA (we have a ton of covered bridges). Underneath this bridge are about two dozen painted wooden signs nailed to the rafters and walls. Some of them have bible quotes and others have quotes that sound like they'd be in the bible, but they're not. There's an old boarded up house right next to the bridge. What I've heard was that there was this guy that lived in the house and went nuts, hanging himself under the bridge. I don't know if this is true or not, but I do know that the signs are there. I've seen them. When I was a teenager I used to hang out under that bridge to smoke cigarettes and just hang out. One time my boyfriend and two of my friends went there at night. All of us (except for my boyfriend) swear we heard bare feet walking above our heads across the bridge. I KNOW what bare feet on wood sounds like, and that's exactly what we heard. Anyway, we got the hell out of there. We didn't see anything.

We only have in MD is:

The Goatman (Half-man & half-goat. Supposely connected to Glen Dale Hospital. He's a result of a experiement gone wrong.)

Bigfoot (Do I need to explain him?)

The Bunnyman (A psycho dressed up as a bunny. Going around & killing people. He even has he's own bridge. Where he will hang people from it after he's killed them.)

The Chesapeke* Bay Monster (Similiar to Nessie, but I don't have enough info.)

*=Sorry for the mispelling.

Lost-Soul.
I live in the medway towns, in Kent,U.K. Just down the road from me is a road called blue bell hill and its supposed to be haunted by a woman who was in a car accident the day (or the week depending on what story you read) before her wedding, [post="http://www.hauntedkent.com/x0003a.aspx"]Link[/post] there have also been big cat sightings in the area.

Also theres Rochester castle , The castle ghost dates from this episode - a white lady, said to be Lady Blanche de Warenne, who was killed by an arrow through her heart during the fighting. She has been seen many times, staggering along with the arrow still protruding from her chest. But there is also a more recent ghost - that of Charles Dickens who is said to haunt the moat on Christmas Eve. In fact there are a lot of places around here that are ment to be haunted by Charles Dickens, including the dickens museum in Rochester high street.

Here in "wine country" there is an old cemetary that kids used to go to, so they can party and do all the things teens are notorious for. Back in the early fifties two teens were allegedly making out in the car around midinight while they were parked next to this old cemetary. The kids never showed up at school the next day and panic ensued. The sheriff's supposedly only found their teeth and fingernails lined up in a row on the car's bumper the next day. The story claims that some "winged demon" haunts or guards the cemetary and brings it's evil upon those who would desacrate the cemetary.

Here in Louisville, we have the Waverly Hills Sanitorium, which anyone who has seen Ghost Hunters knows about. Supposedly, this former tuberculosis hospital is one of the most haunted locations in America. During it's time as a TB hospital, somewhere near 10,000 people entered the halls, and never left. Supposedly, they performed treatments that were less than ethical. During the 70s it became a nursing home, and was shut down after allegations of abuse.

In Cherokee Park, there is a statue of Pan that comes to life and dances around the park.

Like many places, such as Texas and Maryland, Louisville has its own version of the Goatman. This particular version haunts a train-tressle, and lures teenagers onto the tracks by mimicking loved-ones in distress. Legand has it this Goatman was a circus performer tormented by locals before he was killed in a train-accident, on the same tressle it now haunts. And like the the Goatman in other areas, it attacks people necking on Lover's Lanes. On an interesting sidenote, this version of Goatman is said to be an albino; it could be coincidence, but there have been sightings on an albino bigfoot in Jefferson County (where Louisville is).

Sitting on the bottom of the Ohio are said to be giant catfish, e ach the size of a Volkswagen, devouring that gets anything that will fit in their mouths, including people.

There's a church (there's not much about it) somewhere in MD. And the story goes that it's haunted. And one day (it doesn't say) that this couple was driving along the road where the church is. The boyfriend stopped infront of the church & he left the girlfriend by herself. But locked the doors and when he returned, he found her hanging by a tree infront of the church but the doors where still locked. (I have to research more about it.)

They also say you will get chased by a ghostly hoarse.

That's all the info I know by memory I know of the church.

Edit: I've heard of "Waverly Hills Sanitorium" before. Pretty cool place.

That's scary. Copycats. *Whistles.* On the goatman I mean.

Don't know if anyone wants to take the time and read this, but being from Tucson this is probably the city's most famous murder case.

Charles Schmid: The Pied Piper of Tucson

Well, a very good friend of mine relates how he and some other friends of his would party out in the desert in that same area where Charles buried the body of the Rowe girl. According to him on one occasion one of their party got upset at one of these gatherings and walked out and so they went to look for him. This was at night and they kept hearing this mysterious laughter and could not figure out where it was originating from. He claims to this day that none of them were on drugs or alcohol at this time. He is positive that there were no other people in the area. He later told some others of what occurred and they gave this reaction and told him this was where Charles Schmid buried his first victim. There was another occasion where they were at this same area and the car would not start and someone says "Alleen, please let us go!" and sure enough the car started.

Now, I've only heard this from him so I don't know if there really is such a local legend about this girls ghost or just the imagination of a bunch of partying teen age kids, but he likes to tell this story from time to time.

Visited the UK twenty years ago. Scotland IMO was the best part. We drove along the shore of Loch Ness. Low hanging clouds certainly gave it an eiree ambiance - loved it!

It's been said that the UK is the most haunted nation in the world with the many old castles and manors said to be inhabited by spirits. I know that Locn Ness is not the only one that's suppose to have a monster. Goody, where is this trail? Would love to see it if I ever return.

Well here in Sarnia, Ontario alot of the school bathrooms are haunted you can hear girls laughing and snickering alot. Also in this forest i found a tiny "shrine" with various owl and cat bones put around it with latin letters written on a stone. I was going to go back there and get some picture but im really afraid to by myself. Also there is alot of sighting of ghosts where a type of construction site use to be and many people died there because of the various chemicals. Also their is this huge tunnel that goes under a bridge and you can hear voices in it too sometimes you can see figures... And thats my towns sights.

Ehhh no 'urban legends' as such, but

The cometary in my suburb's graves keepers house is supposed to have quite a bit of spectral activity.

There's a house that people think is used for occult rituals, but really it's used for buddist meditation classes and international monks on visits often stay there. However, the owner of the house and many of the guests say that there are often reportedly unexplained sounds, a feeling of presence, a feeling of being watched by paintings, animals acting strangely etc. I've been there myself (my Aunt often house sits for the owner) and didn't experience anything.

At my high school there was a toilet locked off because a student OD' on heroin in there, wouldn't be surprised if it was due to superstition.

Also on my high school camp the cabin I and five others had to sleep in, the cleaner hung himself on he rod that was above the bed I was sleeping in. There were lots of ghost stories that went around about that. Sleeping in there was creepy as I was 12 at the time and I generally don't get to sleep until 3 or 4 am, so I had to lie around in the dark while everyone was asleep for a good 3 or 4 hours before me.

There was also a supposed UFO landing seen by around 200 people in the 60's in a near by suburb.

Here in South Jersey, we have the "Jersey Devil"..need I say more devil.gif
rudie
well...lets see, here in Idaho we have a house where someone was in a car wreck, if you park in the driveway your car goes toward the house.

There was this house in my neighborhood that looked like a skull that was suppose to be haunted. My friend took a picture out of her window, you can see a hand reaching in toward her, pretty creepy. They demolished it and are building up a new house on the old property, I feel sorry for the poor people living on the land.

I cant think of much more...but my friend's and I mapped out all of the stores that sold dungeons and dragons products and they form a pentagram tongue.gif ..truly the devils game.

I grew up on the central coast of California.
Heres a couple legends:
-The Haunted Barn, there was this old dairy up in Meguilito Canyon, and supposedly a dair maid got shot or something and its supposed to be haunted. and then theres supposed to be satanic rituals and stuff. But the people that own the property shoot on sight, so we stopped trying to sneak onto their property haha.
-At the high school I went to somebody supposedly fell off the balcony and landed in the back row of seats in the theatre, and now the ghost haunts the theatre.
-Burger Kings bathroom is supposed to be haunted, can't remember why
-the La Purisma Mission is supposed to be hautned in the blacksmith shop
The Puzzler
We have Yowies, Bunyips and Dropbears in the bush....depending on where you live in Australia but they generally do the same thing...eat you if they don't like you.

What are local legends in your country, state, town, or area that you know, or have heard of? I am curious to see if any are similar in diffrent parts of the world to others.

Ill start, I live in colorado springs, Colorado. Theres a place called Helen Hunt falls and its said that if you go up there late at night and look, ull be able to ghost lights popping up and zooming around! Ive tried looking for them first hand, but i havent had any luck, bet yet the legend persists.

So if anyone has any legend that they know of, id be glad to hear it!

Funny, Saturday I thought about starting a thread like this, but I was sailing and didn’t have a computer. Most places have the phantom hitch-hiker story. Or “Cry-Baby Bridge.” Also many places have a local “witch” grave. Here is Chester, SC we have all three. Cry-Baby Bridge: Years ago a car went off the bridge and a child (or children drowned). Now when you go there at night, you hear a child cry. (None of the local papers or records shows any child drowning at that bridge.) Phantom Hitch-Hiker: Standard story of “years ago” a person hit by a car and killed. Now is seen hitching a ride home. If you pick her up, she disappears. (No known record of any pedestrian getting hit on that road.) Witch Grave: Most of the old graveyards around here have one. Same story at each one. Young woman hanged, burned, or what ever as a witch. No record of any local witch trials. One TRUE story. In North Carolina you can see the grave. I’ve seen it. It is a grave of a woman whose husband had her buried in a glass coffin. The coffin was then placed in an above ground sarcophagus. There is a round, iron door that can be moved in order to see into the coffin. Unfortunately, there isn’t much left to see. The legend is that she was buried with a very valuable necklace and in the 1920’s a guy and his girl attempted to steal the necklace. When the opened the glass coffin (don’t ask me how, the legend doesn’t go into details.) they broke the airtight seal and the body decayed in a matter of moments. The couple are said to have gone mad and the necklace has never been recovered. Although the grave is true, there is no documentation of a necklace or a young couple going mad. Thanks for starting this thread.

I live in Indiana and a couple of urban legends I have are:
Gravity Hill, very famous I suppose, a bunch of little kids died on these train tracks when the bus broke down and a train ran into them, now if you park on top of Gravity Hill, the kids will push you safely across, however if they don't that means your going to die by train! We did it once and got a across, also my older sister said that if you go there are midnight you'll see the accident, she did and saw it!
Then we have rollcoaster road, which is really fun to drive on btw, there's an abandoned house there where a single woman back in the early 1900s killed a bunch of men and buried them on her property.
This one is cool because it started a legend!
When my aunt was a baby, her mom took her to the gas station with her, she was in the frontseat in a carseat, and her mom was pumping gas. Well this station guy told her to get her baby and come into the gas station, so she did. Well the guy had called the cops and they came and pulled a guy out of the backseat of her car!

"Gravity Hill, very famous I suppose, a bunch of little kids died on these train tracks when the bus broke down and a train ran into them, now if you park on top of Gravity Hill, the kids will push you safely across, however if they don't that means your going to die by train! We did it once and got a across, also my older sister said that if you go there are midnight you'll see the accident, she did and saw it!" THANK YOU!!!!!!! There is also the same, exact story and type of spot in San Antonio, Tx and another in New Hampshire. I knew there were others, I just couldn't remember where.

I live in Maine and they say the Saco River is cursed.

If I remember right...3 white men stole a local indian girl way back when and when they were crossing the saco river their boat sank and the girl drowned (As well as the guys)

The Indian Chief (I think it might have been his daughter...dunno) was so upset he had the medicine man put a curse on it that it would take the lives of 3 white people every year

So far as I can remember theres been at least 3 deaths each year as far back as anyone I know can recall.

If I wanted to find this "bull" where would I look? (What forest, etc)

Well I live in Cairo and I dont know if this is a legend but this old saying that The dung beetle In the desert is said to roll the sun in and out of the day due to its rolling of dung it is said that it rolles the sun up in the morning, afternoon, sunset, and then back down in a hole for the night.

ALso the sphinx legend that it was once alive and you had to answer a riddle or it would devoure you on the spot. wacko.gif the riddle was "What goes on four legs on two and then three but the more legs it goes on the weaker it be?" try and figure it out! those who already know please dont ruin it!

I read the story or brought the book yet. But there is a "Pig Woman of Cecil County." I'll have to do research on her. And see if it's true.

wavey.gif I live in Jersey, so here's a few...Up at Great Adventure its told that after business hours the #13 bumper car starts to drive around on its own...It's built where the old haunted house was (burned down) and its believed that these are the ghosts of the people who died in the fire...some say there are paranormal occurences in the victorian town of Wennoah, where construction people have been killed...A young girl who haunts an attic and an older lady who floats in flowing dress but has no legs..Also the new arena being built for our "N.J. Devils" is being built on land that was originally a graveyard...Over 1,666 skeletons were removed from the site to make way for the "Devils Arena"... devil.gif We also have haunted bridges, tunnels that go nowhere, and abandoned train stations, just to name a few....

I live in Sweden, and we have plenty of legends about things that live in our woods. The one I'll tell you about now is called Skogsrån.
Skogsrån is a very beautiful woman who lives deep in the woods, and she commands the wild animals. If you treat her well and with respect, she can help you and will be good towards you.It is said that many men have lost their souls to the Devil after meeting Skogsrån,having been seduced by her or getting lost in the woods. She can trick your eyesight, and can change from the most beautiful woman into a hideous monster. If you look closely at her, you'll see that her back is hollow and that she has a tail.Grabbing hold of her tail can save your life if you should need it,but as she is a vengeful creature she will most likely seek you out in the night and take her revenge.
Most of our legends are about creepy, vengeful beings like Skogsrån.Spending time in the woods here definately makes you believe that something "unnatural" lives there, there is a certain atmosphere.
Let me know if you want more Swedish legends, and I shall oblige!

In Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, John Brown's ghost is said to walk around town with a black dog. I haven't been there, before, but I'd p*** myself if I were to see it with my own eyes.
