What are local legends in your country, state, town, or area that you know, or have heard of? I am curious to see if any are similar in diffrent parts of the world to others.

Ill start, I live in colorado springs, Colorado. Theres a place called Helen Hunt falls and its said that if you go up there late at night and look, ull be able to ghost lights popping up and zooming around! Ive tried looking for them first hand, but i havent had any luck, bet yet the legend persists.

So if anyone has any legend that they know of, id be glad to hear it!

There's a bunch of schools here that are supposed to be haunted.

We have "The Holy Cross" which is this abandoned hospital thing for WWII and theres a bunch of tunnels under there, most of them are caved but lots of people say they've "fallen though the concrete" and landed in one of the tunnels. :S. It could happen AT the holy cross but just in random places in town I doubt it, my brother fell through the floor at the holy cross once though when he was 15.

Thats defently fasinating! Theres also this road by colorado springs, known as gold camp. It used to be the old stage cotch road from denver to colorado springs to cripple creek. You can only go on part of it now though, due to the fact that there are tunnels that are caving in so that is restricted to vechles and has a walking trail that goes around it. On the part you can drive on, there are two tunnels that can be entered with a car. In one it is said if u go in and turn off ur head lights that when u come back out there will be a hand print somewhere on one of ur car windows, another is that if u are in the same tunnel and look out to the entrance and just stare, the light from the entrance will almsot start seeming as if it goes in and out...(very weird, ive seen it myself) but perhaps it is just mind tricks. The hand marks on the windows might just be from the teputure change as the car enters the tunnel, there fore revieling the grese of somone who had placed there had on the window at a later date and left a print. All in all it is still an interesting experiance and i hope to hear more from others.

I don't know if merpeople are urban ledgends, but its the only paranormal thing thats happened near where I live.

It was in a place called skiningrove, the locals found a merman floating near the surface when fishing, they caught it, brought it back to the village and fed it fish. The merman also preferred the company of women rather than men. When the vicar or bishop came he tried to talk to it the creature, it didn't understand, the holy man then began to torture the merman. A few days later the merman escaped and the locals watched it swim away.

I live in an area that is surrounded by unexplained and supernatural happenings, There is the Mothman for instance, the curse of Chief Cornstalk, who as he was dying cursed Point Pleasant that bad things would always happen there.I live across the river to Point Pleasant, where also during the time of the Mothman there were reported ghost lights in the sky and and heightened poltergeist activity,Another place not far is called Athens, OH there are too many legends to name there, one is about the grave of a warlock who was killed a long time ago by the towns people, it is said that if you lay upon his grave and put your head where his is supposed to be(because it is believed the way to kill a warlock was to cut off his head and put it between his ankles.)that you will die exactly a year later on that date. There is also five cemetaries that on a map form a pentagram, Athens was rumored to at one time have been the occult capital of the eastern seaboard. There are numerous hauntings there and an angel statue that is in a cemetary that has been seen moving and crying, if you look up Ohio legends and folklore Athens in particular there are some creepy things.

I wouldn't consider this a urban legend, at least for the legend part:
Near the are were i live there's a big lagoon, we call it in Portuguese, "lagoa da
ervedeira" wich means something like "the grasser lagoon" this lake is said to have a hole in the center that leads to the sea, a lot of ppl died there, mostly drowned and i remember that they once told me that a guy was shredded into pieces by a boat near the center, they say ppl that go too near the center cant come back cos they're grabbed by something that pulls them to underwater, anyway, some say that happens cos of large grasses underwater that grab ppl legs others say that is the hole, but maybe i was the one that was closer to the thruth.
the last time i went there i was swimimg and my knee hited something hard (at the time i tought it was a rock) and as i started to bleed i felt what could be one underwater plant touching my wound, i went outside and i cleaned the wound then i went back to try to remove the rock so that no one else would get hurt,
u can imagine how i felt when i came back to the exact same spot and i didn't found anything, i even searched around it and there was nothing there.

what it might be i will leave it to your imagination.

wow, those are all awsome stories!! I think they could account for Urban Legends? None the less there great stories and i hope to hear more!

Theres a place in Colorado Springs known as "Garden of the Gods" It has huge rocks that have pushed up through the earth millions of years ago, making it a wonderful site. Now on a deeper level this place is belived by some, and belive me iv walked there at night and have seen people practacing "occult rituals." Its belived by some that this place is somthing or a "hell mouth" leading into hell. I have a friend that worked there one summer, he patroled the area and made sure that no one would try climbing the gigantic rocks and hurting them selves (500 dollar fine). He told me a story that sopposidly happend to someone he knew. Theres a story that some type of being(s) live there and if ur not carful and you come face to face with it, u better run. I guess its best descibed as a demon. Anyways, my friends, friend was there one night with some of his friends, they were laughing and messing around. Haveing a good time. He said he went into the bushs a little while and remerged screaming with dread and pain. When his friends found him his arm was covered in blood. Apperently sections of his skin had been riped clear off. So they took him to the hospital where they asked how it had happend, and he said he had walked a little ways away and out of no where in fast instant he was bleeding all over and was in lots of pain. They then associated it with the mystrious being that is sometimes sited at night, with glowing red eyes, so forth. Other friends have claimed to see it in forested areas of colorado springs. But who knows what happend in Garden of the Gods that night, for one they were all drunk, and two, it was dark. And if it is true then I guess its up to you to figure out how it happend that all the skin on his arm suddenly got torn off!?

there is supposed to be this house (not sure where) nd these people live in it (about 15 - 20 people) nd the dress up as clowns. they go out during 1-2 in the afternoon and look for kids who r on their lunch break and they slit the kids cheeks to make it look like they're smiling nd if the kid trys to smile their cheeks will rip open and spill blood everywhere

Well i live in Winchester, well near abouts. In the south of England. Well we have a rather famous tramp, called Burping Ron who wanders the streets of Winchester, burping at women. This is true, as ive had a personal experience. dontgetit.gif Well anyway he pushes a pram around town, full of junk and being hobo-ish, even though he has a house at the top of town. Apparently he is a millionaire just posing as tramp...for some reason.

Theres also apparently a big cat that lives near to where i live. oo exciting! Umm...also theres a road called Kiln Lane that is meant to be extremely haunted with ghost cars and a screaming woman. mellow.gif Theres also a load of other ghost sightings around this area. But not very many urban legends... no.gif

My brother wanted me to say that everyone thought a girl at their school went off to join SOuth Korean army. it was a lie of course.

The good folks at Tuttle Crossing Mall in Columbus, Ohio breathed a sigh of relief towards the end of April 1998 when phone calls about the horror story then circulating on the Internet began to decrease. It began to look as though they had finally put the damaging old rumors behind them.

As the stories went, a female shopper had left the mall to return to her car and found she had a flat tire. As she set about changing it, a man in a business suit approached and offered to help. She accepted, and together they installed the spare tire without incident.

When they were finished, the helpful businessman asked the woman for a ride to his car, which he said was parked on the other side of the mall. For some reason his request made the woman uncomfortable, so she politely declined. He became insistent. Fearful of his intentions, the woman told the man she had more shopping to do and fled back into the mall, where she reported the incident to security officers.

Later, when she went back to her car accompanied by the officers, the "good samaritan" was nowhere to be found. Since the deflated tire still needed repair, she drove to a nearby garage, where a mechanic noticed that that the tire had been slashed with a knife. It was also discovered that the man had left his briefcase in her trunk.

"She opened it," the story concludes, "and the only things in it were some rope and a butcher knife!"

Link, but it's proven fake here

In a quiet west-side neighborhood of Columbus Ohio, lies a small neatly kept cemetery. surrounded by a low, gray stone wall with a plain, spiked iron fence erupting from its top. This quiet cemetery hardly gets a second glance from passers by, or from the school children that play in the adjacent schoolyard, but this ground has quite an interesting and tragic story to tell. It is the final, resting place of 2,260 Confederate soldiers.

During the bloody years of the American Civil War, Camp Chase served as a primary training camp for the Union Army. As the war wore on, Camp Chase was used as a prison camp to hold captured Confederate troops. The camp officially became a prison on July 5, 1861, when the first group of prisoners arrived from western Virginia. Camp Chase was known as one of the worst prison camps of the era, with terrible conditions and severe over crowding, the camp held up to 9,425 prisoners. More than 2,300 men died here of malnutrition and disease, 2,260 of them were buried in the camp cemetery, in long rows of graves marked by simple stone tablets. With so much heartache and loneliness in its past, it is no wonder that this cemetery has witnessed a long history of strange occurrences.

One of the more persistent and recurring apparitions, is that of the "Lady in Gray." The specter of a young woman, dressed in a lady's gray traveling suit, a typical fashion for women in the late 1860's, is seen walking through the cemetery. Her head held low, she appears to be weeping. By some accounts, she has been witnessed walking through trees, tombstones, and even disappearing through the stone wall surrounding the cemetery. The "Lady in Gray" is thought to be the spirit that frequently leaves flowers at the head of one of the graves. These mysterious (fresh) flowers have been seen many times over the last 130 years, and always at the same grave stone. On several occasions, local residents have reported hearing the sounds of a woman weeping forlornly, coming from inside the enclosed plot, when patrolling police officers have investigated, no one is ever found.

I live in North East UK, not much happens. Whitby's not far off, a few stories from there but I know not of them.

My band practices in a boxing club, that place is the scariest place ever. Last time we heard breathing from the back behind a curtain, today I heard women walking down stairs and talking (the back parts are all locked), then we started to receive some German talking through the guitarists amp - I never knew it was possible to pick up any German radio on an amp, did you? There's an air about the place.

However, I'm open minded about ghosts unless I'm having an encounter, I'd rather tell myself I didn't see a ghost and carry on.

Apparently a man commited suicide by jumping off a bridge in midday, landed dead center in the middle of a schools playground. Yes, it was breaktime. I can't verify this sadly, but I remember hearing it somewhere around here.

Here in New Mexico (and West Texas) there is La Llorona (pronounced Yorona).

Supposedly a woman murdered her children and chopped them into pieces. She threw the pieces into the Rio Grande.

Now she is doomed to walk the river banks, irrigation canals, etc., looking for her children because she can't enter the afterlife/Heaven/whatever until she locates them.

Now, I'm not saying the legend is true, but many people have reported hearing the sound of a woman crying around waterways just after sundown.

About 45 minutes from where I live now there is a an old burned-down mansion with a very creepy history. It's called Corpsewood and it's supposedly haunted. Our very own Michelle's actually been there and has promised to take me! laugh.gif

well i live in malta, europe (for those who dont know where the tiny island is tongue.gif) and we have a lot of prehistorics temples and hypogeums (which are practically underground temples). now there is this one particular hypogeum called Hal Saflieni which is also a World Heritage Site. It's not an urban legend as it truly occured. What happened was that a group of around 20 young students with their teacher went to tour the place and got lost in the tunnels of the hypogeum and were never found. this happened truly but it is creepy. It was reported in the newspapers of the time and today if you want to go to visit the temple you cannot do this on your own and many of the tunnels have been sealed off to stop persons from having the same fate as those students.

Service Call of the Month

Service call of the month from a Manitoba Gas & Electric residential customer ..

MGE received a call from a customer saying: "My power is out. When you come to fix it be sure to bring a truck with a tall enough bucket to remove the deer".

The customer service rep prudently trying to gather helpful information to help diagnose the problem asked, "What deer"?

The customer replied " There is a deer on top of one of the electric poles on Wilkes Rd about 1/2 mile west of perimeter Rd".

The customer service rep tried desperately to pull herself together and not laugh in front of the customer and replied" We will dispatch someone right way to investigate the power outage. Thank you for the call".

Upon completion of the call, the customer service rep proceeded to share the funny story with her coworkers in the office and they all had a good laugh.

Well, low and behold, the serviceman who repaired the problem stopped by the customer service office the following day with the attached pictures.

Sure enough, the poor deer had been hit by a train & landed on top of distribution feeder pole!

In the Phils, we have a local urban legend in BF Paranaque called the white lancer along aguirre road. one version goes is that when you go home late one night, a white lancer will race beside you, daring you to go faster kind of driving. but when he opens his window, you wont see anyone driving the car (this has been famous in the 80's, ut now i think the car would be an Evo 8 to cope up with the times original.gif

another is the headlight stabber. legends goes that one night a single driver was plying the same road (aguirre road) when a car behind him keeps on flashing the high beams and keeps blowing his horn. the driver ignores this until it reaches the point that he was so annoyed that he stopped his car and approached the car behind him. then the driver of the rear car explains that he saw someone with a knife behind the driver, and was about to stab him, thats why he kept on flashing his high beams and blowing his horn. the guy in the front car, visibly irritated, led the guy to his car to show him that he was all alone and nobody was behind him, lest stab him. but when they approach his car, they saw the headrest and some parts of the upholstery torn open, and lying in the backseat was a big knife. freaky?

Theres a legend of Wilbur the Lawnmower man that mowed everyones lawns somewhere around the 70s but some kid killed him because he ruined something in their lawn (it changes from skatboard to a chewbaca action figure). Then years later the kid was mowing his yard and he was killed by the lawn mower.I'm pretty sure its not true but it's a cool story anyway, well in my opinion.

There's an urban legend going around my uni (at least I assume it's an urban legend).

There's a youth correctional facility near our uni (don't ask) and there's always been stories of people walking from uni to the station at night where an "escaped maniac" has murdered the student with an axe.

I can't imagine that this is a true story - it all sounds rather amusing. None-the-less there are people who are scared to death of the path to that station and will walk the other direction (though it might be longer) to get to another train station.

Most of my local legends revolve around fairies. Most of them occur when someone wanders off aimlessly or is by themselves blueberry picking. Most of the time they come out disabled physically or mentally. Others just report being enchanted. In my particular area there was a woman who had been killed, by stoning I believe, for being a prostitute or a witch I think. The name of the rock is "Bonners Rock" on Sick Hill. This happened around one hundred years ago my grandfather tells me.

Although this is not where I live now, I used to live in Texas. My aunt was a nurse and worked out a hospital in Austin I believe. I always heard stories of the "Ghost Comforter" when I was probably 5 or 6. it's about a lady who had apparently died in the hospital, and now whenever a patient was feeling lonely or scared, the patient would feel a comforting hand on their shoulder, but there was nobody there. Nobody was scared of her, everybody kinda wished she would come out more. My aunt no longer works there, but I thought I would share it.
Sense_Gurl
I live in Indiana and a couple of urban legends I have are:
Gravity Hill, very famous I suppose, a bunch of little kids died on these train tracks when the bus broke down and a train ran into them, now if you park on top of Gravity Hill, the kids will push you safely across, however if they don't that means your going to die by train! We did it once and got a across, also my older sister said that if you go there are midnight you'll see the accident, she did and saw it!
Then we have rollcoaster road, which is really fun to drive on btw, there's an abandoned house there where a single woman back in the early 1900s killed a bunch of men and buried them on her property.
This one is cool because it started a legend!
When my aunt was a baby, her mom took her to the gas station with her, she was in the frontseat in a carseat, and her mom was pumping gas. Well this station guy told her to get her baby and come into the gas station, so she did. Well the guy had called the cops and they came and pulled a guy out of the backseat of her car!

In 1953, in the region of Mexico where I live, a 12-year-old girl was raped and murdered by a pedaphile at a place where a furniture store now stands. Her name was Amalia Peņa Velazquez. Her body was taken and dumped in a well on a property that I now own.

Today, literally every employee of the furniture store has had an encounter with Amalia. She reportedly appears on the upper floor that is now a warehouse for furniture and the descriptions of her are consistent. Amalia's family lived on that upper floor before the building became a furniture store. There are also countless reports of people calling the furniture store and having a child answer and tell them that they have the wrong number. "This is not a furniture store," she says, "it is the Peņa Velazquez residence!"
A couple of months ago I was in the furniture store at near the back of the store there were five white wrought iron rocking chairs. One was moving and it did not stop throughout the time I was there. I drew the salesgirl's attention to it and she smiled and said, "That's Amalia. She always does that. She also plays with the exercise equipment and we can hear the weights go bang against the floor."
Is it all true? I don't know. But I do know that there have been moonless nights when strange sounds have come from the well.

That is cool! The Finnish, actually the Uralic people in general have an awsome culture and one of my theories is that they contributed to my tribal culture. They were using longboats before the swedes and might have visisted the coast of America. The Finns settled here with the Swedes in 1635 and many members of my tribe have Finnish and Swedish surnames.

Anyone seen the movie "Picnic at hanging rock?" I live about 30 mins drive from there. They say in about the 1900s or 1920s, a group of 3 or 4 girls about 16 years old walked up ther at night, never to return. NO bodies were found either. and if you go up there at night you'll see the girls standing there and so on and so forth....

hmm... you're sure you're not mean norwegians?but finland was a part of sweden once, so maybe u've right... I'll talk to my history teacher... vikings from finland and norway were in america many years b4 columbus... we've many interesting legends, especially in the north and on the south coast, in fact, Loviisa is on the south coast near helsinki, and here's still memories from the war against russia, and the name comes from the queen of sweden, Lovisa Ulrika, when finland still was a part of sweden. here's memories from that time too, and many many legends...

I only know of a few non-specific not so great ones where I live (Iowa).
First, for those of you who have seen the movie "Field of Dreams" (which sucked, and no I dont live anywhere near that town), the main character hears voices in the cornfield. Anyway that is not something made up by that movie, many older farmers claim that if you stand quietly in the fields you can hear the voices of spirits. I've tried it a couple of times and never heard any voices, but it is a little creepy, the corn makes lots of noises, and you can hear mice and other animals moving through it, making the leaves rustle.
About a mile south of the town I live in, there used to be an old farmhouse that was supposedly haunted. We used to go hang out there sometimes. The house wasn't haunted as far as I could tell, but people did go there and have seance's, then they would draw symbols on the walls and floors. I dont like that kind of stuff it kinda creeps me out. Anyway the house was very old and falling apart, but looked like it had been suddenly abandoned, there was old furniture and clothes, and magazines from the 60's. On halloween about 10 years ago, we decided to go down to the old farmhouse to hang out, as we pulled up we noticed it was gone, the new owner of the property had dug about a 20 foot deep pit, and bulldozed the house and the three or four trees on the property into the pit to burn. When we got there the blaze was huge, so we called friends, and spent our night sitting around this huge fire drinking and smoking.
The last one is the classic asylum story, when it was in use in the 1950's it sat about 5 miles out of the east end of town, on a dirt road. Because of expansion it is not so far away now. It was a classic 50's insititution, strapping people to the beds, electroshock, etc, etc. How much of it is true I dont know, but supposedly it was shut down in the 1970's for in-humane practices, and has been abandoned since. In high school local kids swore it was haunted, and would go there to hang out. I have never been inside, but it sure looks creepy from the outside, the property is now owned by a county deputy who doesnt like stupid little kids going inside, so I dont know if i will ever get the chance. Maybe I will just go ask him if i can go in.......... anyway, there are some more stories from my neck of the woods (or corn field rather), but I cant think of them off the top of my head, I will get in touch with ould friends and talk, then i'll post some of the old stories.
Baku
In Persia and Azerbaycan we have a great legend named Babek. This is a true story by the way.

In the time when the muslims arised they conquered great empire's without a sweat, egypt, osseman, mesiotopia, etc all were overrun in less then months. But when the muslims arrived in Persia and Azerbaycan they were held off by a general named Babek. Babek his closest friend got killed in that battle. So Babek and his man swore by the Flame that they would kill 10 muslims for every Persian/Azeri that was killed (flame is most holy elemental in Zoroastrian religion). And thus the immortal soldiers were born, it took over 10 muslim soldier to kill one of Babek his men. The muslims named the soldiers of Babek GodLike's. This name was later on changed to immortals, the most elite swordsmen in those times, but you now know were it all started and why.
Anyways because of Babek his outstanding performance against the invaders, he ended up marriyng the princess and became King of Azerbaycan. With Babek on control of the soldiers, it made it a very hard situation for the muslims. So hard that it actually took over 25 years to conquere the Azeri and Persian empire.

But Babek was never defeated! Babek was the most dead wanted person in the muslim world ever, so he had quite some money on his head. And thus he was betrayed by one of his closest generals. Babek was send to the most heaviest death penalty in the muslim religion (just try to imagine this). His last words were, the only man who will always walk next your side is your own shadow. After that the muslims killed all his followers, his loyal soldiers, citizens, etc. The muslims burned all the evidence that Babek ever excisted, because they were so ashamed that one man could make a difference. After this the muslim army couldnt go any further then Persia, they had lost to many years and man with Babek to expand their empire.
Eventhough the muslims tried to erase all eveidence of Babek, he is still not forgotten. His amazing castle is this there. 4km up on the top of a mountain.

So as you can see this is the world most greatest legend ever. The reason why you westerlings never heard about him is because as I said, the musliums burned down everything! There are only a couple of paintings left and a castle.

I also added some pics of Babek his castle and a pic of himself.

I hope you guys enjoyed this story, and its real by the way, everything is real about it!

So if anyone has any legend that they know of, id be glad to hear it!

here in central california, we have an urban legend of a woman who was driving her newborn son over a windy road called "harris grade". she supposedly lost control of her car and drove off one of the cliffs. they say you can see her ghost wandering on that same grade late at night...the legend then leads to shutting off all the lights in front of a mirror, then saying agnes, i've got your baby. she is supposed to come out of the mirror and sctrach or harm you. just a myth, but i grew up with it... hmm.gif
