I first encounted "The Baby in the Chair" in the Ann Landers newspaper advice column around 1960. I "bit" hard.
A decade later I brought it up in after-dinner conversation. One of the dinner guests was the registrar for a well-known Kentucky university.
"Oh, that one was all over Lexington [Kentucky] just this past year" she replied.

A young couple were waiting impatiently to leave on their first vacation since the baby was born but the woman's aunt, who would be babysitting was thirty minutes late. The young woman called her elderly aunt to find out what was going on, and the old woman apologized for her forgetfulness, and said she'd speed right over. Since the aunt was only a couple miles away, the couple decided they'd go ahead and go rather than wait for her and risk missing their flight. Two weeks later when the couple returned they were horrified to find the baby still in it's high-chair where they'd left it, except now it was dead and bloated, and covered with flies. The aunt really had sped, and unfortunatly crashed and died before she made it over.
This is one sickening story. It's sickening to me because it could so easily happen in real life

This could not possibley happen. When the Aunt died, the family would have been notified by police emediatley. There is no way the parents could have gone without knowing of the aunts death for 2 weeks. This is just a sick stupid story someone made up for attention.

ACTUALLY, while this particular scenario is not true (or maybe it is, but I doubt it). There is a true story, which is MUCH worse. It happened in Norfolk, Virginia a few years back.
There were two parents who were in the Navy. They had to go on a 2 week "cruise". They didn't have anyone to babysit their baby and I suppose knowing what they did, they were some pretty horrible parents to begin with. They went on the 2 week cruise and LEFT THEIR BABY in his crib, with a bottle of formula. Naturally, when they came back, the baby was dead.
This is not a story from a friend of a friend. This DID happen, because it was on the news and the parents were charged. Obviously, there ARE parents who would leave their child for 2 weeks without calling to check on it, as these parents would not only do that, but leave the child alone INTENTIONALLY.
I am now on page 16 of my google search on it. I will post a link if I can find it. Since it happened a few years ago, I'm sure it's going to be a long search.

What a horrible thing to happen to that dear baby. If the story is true, then shame on the selfish parents. Why didn't they wait to see if she turned up. Besides leaving a child unattended in a high chair without an adult is just plain stupid and neglectful.
The child could have slipped out of it's high chair. My daughter was clever when she was a baby. She learned how to slip out underneath the high chair. I can't tell you how she did it, but I had the prescence of mind to be in the house when she did it.
She never got hurt slipping out of her chair, while I was in the kitchen preparing a snack for her.
It doesn't surprise me that something like that happens. Recently, a couple for prosecuted for leaving their baby in the carseat here in the UK this past Summer. When the couple came back their baby was dead. This really happened, but I can't recall the exact date.
The couple claimed that they hadn't been away too long from the car. Basically, and unfortunately, the child died the same way, as dogs do locked up in cars.
What a sad, sad, sad world!

This story is plausible but seems highly unlikely. I mean like everyone said, wouldn't the parents check up on the baby? And if they were THAT neglectfull, then it's possible. How would the police know that the aunt was supposed to babysit the baby?
They don't unless it was written somewhere. How are the police supposed to know what the aunt was supposed to do before she died?

Of course they're brainless, they don't exist because this hasn't happened (yet).
But yes, you get bad parents so maybe it could, but this is just a story. A warning. The circumstances are too far fetched and I'd be

Also, Snopes.com tells you if it's true or not but people seem to just ignore that very interesting part of the site and copy/paste the story instead.

If they were that neglectful, why would they wait there and get a baby sitter in the first place?

This is so hard to believe! I would think any new parents who was leaving their baby for the first time would be calling home practically everyday to check on the baby and when no one ever answered the phone they would either make arrangements to come home, contact another family member, call the police. It is extremely hard to believe they did not call home during their vacation. Not to mention they surely would of been contacted by someone informing them of their aunts death. I think I have to go with urban legend on this one.

One time, they wanted me to speed over, which is like, a total joke, because my car can NOT speed (it goes VROOM, VROOM - shkk hzz.. -melt-), so I just said, "You're the parents and the actual carers of the child, so please don't ask me to rush, because I can just turn this car around, if you like, and you can spend quality time with your kid." and hung up. xD I got there, though.

We had a true crime here in Greater Cincinnati about 18 months ago.
Two foster parents would leave their mentally-challenged three-year-old foster son 'stored' in a closet when they
went on vacation, wrapped up tight in a rug.
After one of these trips they arrived home to find the boy dead.
So they incinerated the body and then declared the child missing. 10,000 local citizens gathered to search for him!
Foster mother's doing 54 years to life, foster father's doing 16 to life.

Scary For Kids
Feb 6 2008, 05:17 PM
I've read this one in all the urban legend books. But I think there may be a grain of truth to it. I remember reading about one real life case that was similar. A young single mother decided to commit suicide by cutting off her own arm with a knife (she was severely mentally disturbed). She had 3 kids as I remember, all of them either babies or toddlers and she was living alone. She succeeded in killing herself but luckily she left out food on the floor so her children could get to it. I think the neighbors became suspicious and police came about a day later to rescue the kids. But it could have been a whole different story if she hadn't been (slightly) sane enough to leave out food for her babies.

Yes, the old sailing ship docs could remove a limb in less than 30 seconds, but they had had years of practice, knew what they were doing, and most importantly weren't working on themselves.

LOL. Yeah it was very gruesome. I read about it in a book about "equivocal deaths" - written by an FBI agent whose job was to determine whether someone was murdered or whether it was suicide. The woman cut her arm halfway off and then bled to death from her injuries. As I said, she was severely mentally disturbed, off her medication and was "inspired" to do it after reading biblical passages. Something to do with "If thy right arm offends thee, cut it off" etc etc. Very grim indeed....

Oh my God! That just made my stomach turn. . .I have a three year old and I don't think I could EVER do anything even remotely similar to that.. . I can't even leave him in a room by himself for a few moments, much less leave him in the house by himself! I'm sure there are some parents that are actually that neglectful. Not too long ago there was a man near where I live that threw his three children off a bridge just because him and his wife got into an argument. . .and then there was a woman that went into a convenient store bathroom and shot her two kids (3 & 1) and walked out like nothing happened. . .Then my mom told me about a couple that had taken their baby into the bathroom with them, and after about an hour of the baby screaming, the manager opened the door to find the parents dead of heroin overdoses. . .they actually shot up heroin in a mcdonald's bathroom with their infant in there with them. . .I have to agree with Starr. . I think people ought to have to have a license before having children. There are too many bad people in the world having babies.

That story is not impossible to believe.
There was a baby, a couple hours from where I live, abandoned in an alley.
She was only a couple weeks old, and it was one of the coldest days of the year.
There have been some pretty disturbing stories, concerning children..
Now, this is just an assumption, or course.. But, wouldn't a FAMILY
who is well-off enough to be going on vacation TOGETHER (meaning there appear to be no family problems)
be a little more responsible?
I'm sorry, but I simply cannot believe this story.
It may seem very stereotypical, but I would have an easier time believing single parents would abandon their children before a couple would.
