England run rampant (again) in the Ashes.
England take control
17:52pm 26th August 2005
England made the most of the helpful bowling conditions to strike three times at the head of Australia's first innings at Trent Bridge.
Matthew Hoggard claimed two and Simon Jones one - each from leg before decisions - to leave the Australians 22 for three in reply to the 477 piled up by Michael Vaughan's men.
Opener Matthew Hayden survived when an inside edge saved him from a huge shout for lbw in the 10th over. But it was the briefest of reprieves as the very next delivery swung back in to leave umpire Aleem Dar in no doubt.
Welshman Jones followed up with one which nipped back to Ricky Ponting, who played around the ball, and watched as West Indian Steve Bucknor raised the finger in typical time-freezing style. And Hoggard made it three for two in 11 balls when an off-cutter snuck past the inside edge.

The Australians can no longer deny that England are the best in the world and WILL become No 1 if we win the Ashes, just like our rugby team overtook them to become no1 int he world - and then we won the rugby World Cup against them in the Final.
This time, we're gonna beat them in the Ashes.
First rugby, then cricket - next football! Watch out Brazil.

England continuing to go strongly.
Australia were just 99-4 overnight, and now they are on 170-8.
Simon Jones took two wickets from just two balls, so Australia went from 157-4 to 157-6
Two more Australian wickets have fallen since then for just 13 runs, and it isn't looking too good for Australia.
If England don't go 2-1 in this Series with just one more Test to play, I'll be highly suprised.

It's not often that Aussies are quiet, but when their cricket team is getting destroyed by the world's best team then there's nothing to do but be quiet and watch a formidable England bowling attack do it's job.
If England win the Ashes, which we will do, we'll be number 1 in the world.

But the 20 years prior to 1987, we were the ones who always dominated Australia. We also won the Ashes the one before that in 1981. It's only from about 1989 to 2005 that Australia have dominated England, but now it's started to swing back towards England again.

Australia are all out.
So in the 1st innings, England got 477 and Australia got 218.
That gives England a lead of 259, and should have about 15 minutes or so to start their batting innings before tea at 12.30.

In fact, Australia are batting again because they didn't avoid the follow-on.
It's the first time since 1988 that they have failed to avoid the follow-on.

It's the close of today's play, with Australia on 222-4 in the Second Innings. That leaves them just 37 runs behind England but England still need to bat.
Australia need to bat like supermen tomorrow if they are to stop England taking s 2-1 lead in the Series.
wrighty
Aug 27 2005, 06:53 PM
Australia were good today but I still think we can do it.
Blackleaf
Aug 28 2005, 08:30 AM
Well, they were better in their second innings than in their first. They only got 218 in their first innings, but in their second they are 222-4, that means England lead by 37 but have only batted once.
So Australia will probably need to get about 500 runs in front of England in order to be safe, cos England got 477 in their first innings and can easily do it again. So if Australia are to get 500 runs ahead of England, they'll need to score about another 500 runs which will take them to about 720-odd or 730-odd runs, which is a MASSIVE total, which is why I think an England win is a formality now.

That's what you call a g'day, mate
England's winning ways are catching
Vic Marks, cricket correspondent
Sunday August 28, 2005
The Observer
Glory beckons for England. On yet another gripping day of Test cricket, Michael Vaughan's side moved within touching distance of the Ashes and made a humbled Australia follow on for the first time in 17 years.
The dominant team in the sport for more than a decade will have to conjure a recovery to match England's at Headingley in 1981 if they are to save the game. They look certain to fall behind in the series in front of another packed house at Trent Bridge today with Channel 4 expecting a television audience of several million.
The tourists, who have held the Ashes since 1989, were bowled out for 218 in the fourth Test yesterday, a deficit of 259. Simon Jones took five for 44 and Vaughan 'invited' the Australians to follow on. Such an invitation has not been issued to an Australian captain since 1988.
Since then Australia's stranglehold has gradually tightened. But now England have a golden opportunity to go into the final Test at the Oval holding a 2-1 lead.
In his first over of the day, Jones dismissed two batsmen in successive deliveries and soon after Andrew Strauss took a stunning catch, probably the best of the series, to account for Adam Gilchrist.
As has become the norm, the cricket was fast and furious, and in their second innings the Australians, having lost their openers, were going well before the crucial run-out of their captain, Ricky Ponting, by substitute fielder Gary Pratt.
Ponting was furious, exchanging words with England players and gesturing to the England balcony. He later apologised for his reaction. At close of play Australia were still 37 runs behind with six wickets remaining.
The final Test, which begins on 7 September, will be a sporting occasion that dwarfs anything that the Premiership can offer. Tickets for all five days have been sold out for months. Autumnal rain may dampen proceedings, but if Vaughan's team are 2-1 up in the series, few English cricket fans would be too bothered even by a five-day downpour.

Little Bruce was at school in Sydney when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the usual answers were given but Bruce stayed quiet before blurting out: "He's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off his clothes in front of other men, then he kisses them for money." The teacher took him aside and asked: "Is that really true about your dad?" Bruce admitted: "No, Miss. He's a batsman for the Australian cricket team but I was too embarrassed to say so."

Well if they had played on with eeh bad light and lost a few quick wickets then they would have been in an even worse position to retain the ashes. Hopefully the rain holds off and we get to bat all day and start to surpass Englands score, setting them a nice total to make with the wicket just right for Warne to cause havoc.
