AUGUSTA -- A mother was arrested after her 2-month-old daughter's right foot was chewed on by a puppy and had to be amputated.
Ashley Marie Padgett, 22, had placed her daughter Cadence to sleep in the afternoon and then went to nap herself, said Sheriff's Lt. James Young.
About an hour later, Padgett woke up to Cadence's crying and discovered her puppy, a Jack Russell terrier mix named Rosco, had apparently jumped into the baby's bassinet and chewed off a part of her foot, Young said.
The baby was taken to the Medical College of Georgia where her right foot was amputated.
Padgett was held on $5,600 bond Wednesday at the Richmond County Jail. She is being charged with contributing to the deprivation of a minor.

I agree. Russel terriers are very hyper dogs, though. My friend has 2 of them and they try to bite my ankles. The mother was very stupid, indeed. But it isn't really the dog's fault. The mother now has to probably go to jail for child endangerment and live with the fact that her daughter who has neary begun living a life has now only one foot. People should know not to leave dogs around small children, even if they're well-tained, because the slightest thing could make them attack. The dog also has to be put down now because it has a taste of blood and will keep attacking.

That is so sad, what a horrible thing to have happened.
Total carelessness and irresponsibility, the baby should have been in a more secure location.

I'm usually the first to crucify bad parents, but in this case I really wouldn't call it criminal negligence on the mother's part. The baby was in a bassinet and it surely never occurred to her that the puppy could or would jump into it. As for how long the baby may have been crying before the mom woke up, well I have to say new moms don't get much sleep and she was probably sleeping pretty hard.
It's a horrible and senseless tragedy, but I think the grief and guilt this mom will experience are probably enough of a punishment.
Poor little baby.

No need to crucify the mother. I don't see this as the mother's fault. It's not like the baby was on the floor. It was in a bassinet. I don't blame the mother one bit. You should be blaming the dog, not the mom. You people who are crucifying her are probably not parents yourself. My dog is as gentle as can be with my little princess, I wouldn't expect anything like this out of him.

I'm in agreement with not blaming the mum, honestly if your baby was asleep up high in a bassinet you would expect your child to be safe.
I wonder how old the dog was and if it had showed any signs of aggression before?

I also agree that it is not entirely the mother's fault.
I have a dog and plenty of times I left my baby sleeping in her crib with the dog around. I would never expect my dog to do something like that.
It also mentions the dog was a puppy. More of a reason not to expect such an incident to occur.
The only thing that puzzles me about the whole situation is wouldn't the baby have cried horrendously?
Why didn't the mother wake up?
That is the only thing that sounds a bit fishy to me in this incident.

Maybe the dog had just jumped in to check things out, and a baby being a baby moved it's feet around and maybe pushed/hit the dog and the dog, being angered by this, attacked it's foot.

Having dogs and babies at the same time is really just a bad idea I'm beginning to think......... I'll feel really really bad for the mother when she has to explain this later on in life to the child...

definately irresponsible, the door should have been closed so that the puppy couldnt enter, it could have sat on the babies face and sufocated her to death at the very worst. some people have no brains and its others which have to suffer as a consequence of it.

Dogs aren't complete idiots. She shouldn't take any responsibilty for her dog's actions.

I agree with you completely. No matter how many criminal neglegence charges they throw at her will compare to the punishment she will receive from her self as a result of her conscious.

From this day on, I declare war to Russell Terriers. They are the embodiment of death itself.

Oh yes.. she is a *horrible* mother for placing in a place she believed was safe.. like *gasp* a bassenett. You know.. those things they make for babies to accually sleep in? How dare she not think that her dog who was probaly gentle with the baby would jump into it and chew the foot off.
I mean.. forgot that it was a mistake... Yes there was a few things she could have done...
But you know what.. *every* *single* mother how puts thier babies in a different room then theirs to sleep is just as cruel. That's neglect and is the number one cause for SIDs. But you don't see parents going to jail because of that? (basicaly with sids... the infant gets into such a deep sleep, it's brain "forgets" to breath... if the infant stays with it's mother while sleeping, it can still hear the mother's heart beat and breathing.. thus "teaching" it, in a way, to keep breathing while sleeping.)
I mean, here the child just lost their foot... while other's lost thier lives.
It's all tragic, but calling her a neglectful mother is wrong. It was an acident, it's not like she's one of those drug mothers that like to burn ciggerettes into their baby's limbs...

100% correct, SC...
My family has had dogs since the day I was born, and, to anticipate a sweet little puppy would get into a bassinet and chew on a child's foot, much as it would with a shoe, was never even thought of. Even if the child was struggling, it would just have made it more of a game to the puppy.

I guess it's one more breed of dog that needs to be banned because of it's dangerous propensities.

Wouldnt the mom have noticed some agressive behavior in the dog and put it outside before it actually went this far?

well, whom is responsible for the baby until the baby is 18 yrs old? the parents; who else were they gonna arrest then? the dog??

bad things happen to good people. in this case, the only person that could have controlled the situation was the mother so that is why she was/is in jail.
i feel bad for the mother, but life is not fair.
i feel sad for the baby.

Aren't you people forgetting just one thing? The Baby Connection
A lot of you are pointing fingers at the mother...alot of you are pointing fingers at the dog....
.....why hasn't anyone called into question the
baby's involvement in any of this?
A. The baby was sleeping...she should have been paying more attention to what was going on outside her bassinet.
B. The baby obviously felt the dog chewing and yet said nothing! Oh yeah, she cried...big deal...why wasn't she screaming? Why didn't she call 911 for gods sake?
C. The baby...innocent? I wonder.... Why did the dog feel compelled to jump into the bassinet anyway? Did the baby perhaps
coax the dog to come to her bassinet?
