SYDNEY (AFP) - Australian police said a shark is believed to have killed a diver who went missing near the scene of a lethal attack by a suspected Great White eight months ago.
The man was diving with another man when two people in their dive boat saw him being attacked by a shark, police said Wednesday. The second man managed to scramble back to the boat unharmed.
"Two people in the boat did witness the attack," Acting Superintendent Jim Jeffery told Australian Associated Press. "We are making every attempt we can to locate the person.
"The indications to us though are that it will be very doubtful that we will find the person alive."
Media reports said the man's oxygen cylinder has been found.

Yep, same as usual. Humans in a shark's environment. Sad though.

WHAT WAS THE SHARK THINKING.. OOPS. Now they will find the shark, or some shark to blame for it, and kill it.

They will catch the first big shark they can, say it did it whether it did or not, gut it and try to put people's mind at ease, allowing them to go back to their normal day to day activity.

Haha I've never been a big fan of the ocean, I'd rather stay in the pool. Ocean scares me, can't see what is around you.. Messes with your head.

I really find it hard to have sympathy...I feel bad for the guys family, but really; with all of the shark attacks that happen in Australia, it wasn't like the guy didn't have a clue that there was a risk.
I am not a scientist, but I have figured out that sharks bite people...it is in the paper quite regularly. Sharks are predators and live in the ocean(along with other nasty little critters), so hence I swim in a POOL...with chlorine and a nice filter.
I like my water sans sharks thankyouverymuch.

This is exactly why sharks are one of my favorite animals. They are one of the few creatures that MOST people have the sence to stay away from.

There was also the guy pulled from his canoe by a croc last week.
There's no way you'd get me in any water where I know there's a risk of sharks or crocs.

Once again, my mantra of "never go into the ocean for any reason" is solidified.

Happily, for the sake of the animals, Australia is more "enlightened" than most countries, and generally doesn't condemn these natural predators to death for being natural predators. A case in point was that American model a few years back who stupidly swam in croc-infested waters and was attacked and partially eaten. It was in a wildlife park, and the crocodile wasn't harmed. As I recall, the rangers recovered what was left of the victim, and the croc followed the boat, and tried to take her back. If that had been the U.S. they would have killed it for sure.
Despite their killling a lot of people every year, it is possible to have a "tame" adult crocodile as a house pet. Having raised a baby nile croc to an adult in an 8th floor apartment for 10 years, I can say they can become as gentle as a kitten (providing you are not a kitten or similar sized morsel). This one had run of the house and would catch pigeons on the balcony. For some reason neighbors complained and now Sobek is in a zoo.

Well they are either going to find little pieces of the guy all over the place.... or their going to go shark fishing and starting cutting open stomachs to see if there are human remains in them. :S
And to Draconic, I wonder why they took it away? Pet crocodile be pretty bad if say a toddler were walking by.

It's not like sharks are gonna stop being predators just because we see ourselves as the 'superior' race. Sharks are deadly, we cannot train them to do little tricks like other poor creatures & we can't stop them from hunting for prey, whether it be cute little seals or a man in a wet suit. I agree totally with snuffy puffer, stay out of the ocean! Even here in England, we have always had harmless sharks in the sea until quite recently when a shark, a cousin of the great white has been spotted near the coast of cornwall. It's just not safe!

Some of these replys made me laugh
More people are killed by bee's than sharks every year, but you never hear "Stay out of the fresh air"
I'll stick with swimming, surfing and snorkeling in the ocean. Its alot safer than being on land

Unlucky, but you can't say that swimming in Australia waters there are bound to be sharks. Must have been really scary though.

That's a very fair comment! I suppose that we could all say, stay out of cars just incase we're involved in a road accident. I suppose that the point I'm trying to make is that people wonder why sharks attack & blame them for killing people. If you are in their territory, they are just doing what's natural to them. Hope you continue having fun enjoying your swimming, surfing & snorkelling!

Very few people get killed in the ocean. It's actually somewhat safe in the ocean. The animals will mostly stay out of your way.

As a scuba diver, we always talk to the locals to find out the safest and best places to dive. That should always be the first course of action. I wouldn't give it up because of a few shark attacks a year, any more than I would give up hiking in the mountains because of a few rattlesnake bites.
Swimming with manatees was especially awesome!
Although, in that same river there was a sign that said, "Please, don't feed the alligators."
We didn't...

Michelle, you are pretty brave for that. I would rather mountain climb anyday.. Something about diving with large animals, can't get past the mental part of it to go through with the physical.. Kinda weird how I can jump out of a plane or repel from the side of a mountain but I am scared to death of an swimming with sharks.

matthew, not any weirder than than me being terrified of heights and wanting to skydive so bad I can taste it. I went parasailing twice and it only made me want to do it even more. Try and get me near the edge of a cliff, though, and you take your life in your own hands.
