I believe you're thinking of Fulcanelli the alchemist, who's credited with having written "The Mystery of the Cathedrals". http://vincentbridges.com/chap1a.html should get you started.

Sure. I own copies of "Dwellings of the Philosophers" and "Mysteries of the Cathedrals".

Fulcanelli was an alchemist who, legend has it, was able to achieve the "Great Work". Every century or so, an alchemist comes along who is able to achieve this, according to the annals of alchemy. There are many legends sourounding this mysterious figure, who disappeared after WWII after he had warned some pysicists about the dangers of atomic weaponry. The US intellegence services tried unsuccesfully to locate him, but he did appear years later to one of the authors of "Morning of the Magicians", another book you should read if you are interested in Fulcanneli and alchemy.
