Is it only me, a native(Cree) , that supposes that there are no Native, or very few, Ghosts in America? I seldom hear stories of Native ghosts. The majority of ghosts are Caucasian or light-complexioned. Try not to trouble yourself finding this evidence in the internet since there is only a few stories regarding Native ghosts (http://www.angelfire.com/ca/Indian/DevilsTower.html ).
Ghosts are mostly about the Pioneers and the settlers. Folk-lore from the old land. And I find it peculiar and amusing that most folks believe that some dwellings are haunted because it’s buried under some Native burial ground. From corner to corner in Canada and the USA ,there is must ten of thousands of Native burial grounds and we don’t even know about them.
A spearhead was found in Saskatchewan Canada that dated back 12,000 yrs and more arrowheads are being discovered here that date back from 400 to 1,800 years ago. A worker at the Cooke Golf Course finds what is believed to be the remains of an Aboriginal man dating back 400 to 500 years. City workers found bones that belonged to natives that went back 300 yrs. It was under a old bar that was torn down 2 yrs ago and today it is a forestry center. For years people were drinking, smoking, laughing, arguing, and dancing about 8 feet on top of dead people. There were no stories of visions of indigenous people that could be wearing old native garments in these areas, not even a whisper.

I agree that you do not here much. I live in Michigan and this state is covered with burial grounds, although much of it has sadly been destroyed. I do know of many hauntings in this area that are focused around burial grounds, but it is mostly demon and god like figures that are seen. But I can say that my grandmothers place is haunted by a native woman, she has actually been seen.

I have had an experience with a native american spirit trying to possess me during a rough time of my life. It was the strangest time...I lived in the counrty in Canada(Southern Ontario), and began having horrid , violent nightmares of angry native americans(ojibua), and how they wanted to avenge their death/falling. I remember one dream, a female native american wanted to possess me, but I said she didn't have permission, and she couldn't. I was a mess the whole time I lived there for other reasons. When I left, these dreams stopped. Later, I found out a little girl of five, was possessed by a native american, and she was speaking oujibway, and when they had the exorcim, the spirit was said to have howled all the way down their rural driveway, screaming like a banchee.
Possession saddness me. That something is in unrest, and angry and wants to be heard.
I wish there was another way they could be heard.

My tribe, The Nanticoke-Lenape have a lot of ghost stories in New Jersey, My Uncle, Wadanaga is in the book and website 'Weird New Jersey' for cursing a highwayon a burial ground up in Deptford Twp. and there the Tall Pines campground up the street from my farm that had problems until they dug up bones and the tribal council reburied them on our ceremonial grounds in Fairton.
We have a hill on our ceremonial grounds which we re-bury any remains found by construction or archeologists and are the only members of the Lenape Confederation who dig up bones clean them and hold a dance for them. When the Munsees come down from Moraviantown on the Thames and the Unami up from Bartlesville for our yearly gatherings my friend Brock and I camp on that hill and boy do you dream.

The majority of the my bloodline comes from the Cherokee...and it is my understanding that their 'funeral rites' assist the deceased's spirit on it's path beyond. Wonder if there is more to it that simple ritual?

Yes, I was going to mention that too. This may be one reason that fewer Native spirits are in a state of unrest.

There are many native spirits and spirit guides that do have a very strong presence in certain areas. I actually was speaking to an iroquois man this weekend out at my friend's cottage.
From my understanding ghosts are usually restless spirits that are stuck between the worlds.
It was very important that the spirits of those who passed on reached the land of the ancestors. Shamans would be called on by the community to make peace with certain manitou's and even direct the soul.
However there still cases of restless spirits that have been trapped. One example here in Ottawa was the spirit of a native warrior who's costume was on display in a museum. All kinds of strange things would happen on that floor; objects flying across the room, things disappearing etc.

I third that motion. It always seems to me that Native Americans are more in touch with the spirit world to begin with. It would make sense that they would be more easily able to cross over.

Where I live (my State) there are numerous stories of hauntings and apparitions seen that relate to Native Americans. Mostly these hauntings/apparitions center around battle fields. There is a book published on the hauntings that occur on my Rez., but the book isn't easy to find. I've been searching for a copy of it for some time now, with no luck.

I've heard hundreds of ghost stories that feature Native Americans. Just off the top of my head, there's an antique mall in Washington state (or maybe Oregon?) that is haunted by the ghost of an elderly Native American woman, there's a river that's supposed to be haunted by the spirits of an entire tribe who walked into the waters singing rather than surrender to their enemies and become slaves, there are a number of haunted battlefields in the American west that have native ghosts, not least of which is Little Big Horn, Creve Coeur (sp?) Missouri got its name from the ghost of a native woman who killed herself after her husband died of an illness, there's an area of Chicago that's supposed to be haunted by ghosts of some native Americans who died in a massacre, there's a roadway somewhere (California?) where people have driven off the road trying to avoid the very solid-looking warriors who ride at them on horseback, there's a subdivision in the northwest where people have watched phantom battles fought between two groups of Natives and have even had their house surrounded by the ghosts. Tons of stories.
I've read a Native American ghost story (not supposed to be a real story) about a brave and overly-proud warrior who faced three or four fierce ghosts but then was terrified by a tiny spider. I also recently read a murder mystery (Hillerman? Jonathon Hillerman, maybe?) that involved tribal beliefs about ghosts. I think there's a strong tradition of ghosts among most Native American tribes.
