Hello

A Scottish Phenomenon: here is a website about it.

http://www.firstfoot.com/scotchmyth/macdhui.htm

The Big Grey Man of Ben Macdhui. A large grey creature, bipedal, climbers claim to have been followed by it, chased by it. Usually solitary climbers near the summit of the mountain ben macdhui have had an experience, I have looked into it and there are nearly 200 recorded sightings. The creature has twice been reported as talking the ancient scottish language- gaelic, also reported are voices with no source, strange music etc. The most famous sighting the creature was following someone about 10 paces behind in the mist, keeping pace, their footsteps going at the same pace. When he speeded up the footsteps behind speeded up. He caught a glimpse of it and it was grey, tall with talon like feet dontgetit.gif

The folklore of this creature goes back to the 1600s - it was known as the 'fir liath mhor' - the big grey man in the ancient scots language. A similar thing has been seen on a mountain on the isle of Skye.

I personally have visited Ben Macdhui and it is an eeire, barren, often treeless place, marshy, boggy and lonely, with a foreboding sense of evil hanging all about.
Theres no way a bigfoot creature could live there, but maybe a supernatural creature?

What do you think?

I THINK THAT CONSPIRICY THEORIES IS ALL THAT YOU ARE HANGING YOUR FAITH IN THIS WORLD ON. I WENT TO YOUR LINK, AND IT SHOWED A "DRAWING" OF THE CREATURE. BELOW IT SAID IT WAS THE "ONLY KNOWN PHOTOGRAPH OF THE CREATURE." SOMEONE'S PULLING YOUR LEG...HARD...

This isn't a conspiracy theory, this would be cryptozoology. And I think that the site just has a comedic scene as does a lot of sites aimed at younger people (as this site seems to be).

Anyway this sounds like an incredible story and your assumption that it is some sort of supernatural creature isn't misguided in a place with little or no food, also by the sounds of it the weather is harsh and cold which would also be very unsuitable for supporting life. Great story thumbsup.gif

I am so sorry. I didn't see the link originally.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Well, maybe without the caps. But the basic gist is good. thumbsup.gif

If that was a real photo, then it was a perfect photo of the beast. I beleive they meant to say, " This is the only known possible image of what the creature might look like." , or something along those lines.

And yes, nice hat indeed....

If you've ever been in an isolated place by yourself you'll find you often hear and sense things.

Most the time it's just a trick of your mind, like watching a scary movie and then you imagine you're not alone.

My first thought was some sort of yeti/ sassy but when I read of sightings including top hats. wacko.gif The story then drops many points in credibility.

All captial letters in posts make my head hurt. wacko.gif But I would like to know more about it. I'll check the link later when I have time.

I've heard of the Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui before. Fascinating story! I've never heard of anyone claiming he was wearing a top hat, though. Perhaps that detail was added by the same person who thought the picture on that website was funny.

The truly creepy thing about the Grey Man is that actual sightings are rare and most encounters seem to take the form of an overwhelming sense of dread, often accompanied by the sound of footsteps. It's a sort of feeling that the world is not normal anymore, as I've read, of being out of step with reality and brushing up against something that's just not "right".

There's also supposed to be a "Thing" that stalks the forest at the base of MacDhui. A writer, I believe it was Joan Grant, told of her own experience there sometime in the first half of the twentieth century. She was out hiking with her husband when she was suddenly overwhelmed by the feeling that they were being stalked by something - something that was invisible but completely solid and real, four-legged but "obscenely human". She turned and ran blindly, with her husband running after her wanting to know what was wrong. Finally, as if she'd passed some sort of barrier, she felt as if the danger was gone.

Some time later, she said, two young men who had been out hiking were found dead near where she'd had her experience. She talked to the doctor who examined them and filled out their death certificates and he said he had no explanation for why they died. They were in perfect health, their hearts had simply stopped working. They were found a few yards apart, face down as if they had fallen in flight.

(I'm not promoting this particular story, by the way. I'm simply reporting what I've read. It seems a bit too pat to me, though I suppose it's possible. Perhaps someone living near the mountain could try to verify the hikers' deaths?)
