amagine, in probably five years these scientists will have figuered out a way to regenerate human organs, or end aging all together. We could likely have the ability to become almost immortal. However, how will they implement these medical treatments? There will be alot of debates over if or when we should be able to use treatments to live "forever".

I believe that unless we begin to utilize a source of clean energy, and start living in smaller and verticle spaces, we will not be able to sustain a population of people who have lived "forever".

If you take a look at what I posted here http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum...showtopic=49465 It seems tho even if we gained immortality right now, population would not rise sharply straight away. "Global population would hit about 13 billion in 2100 rather than 10 billion if we didnt have immortality "

population by 2100:

13 billion With everyone immortal from today
10 Billion if we don't achieve immortality

So the problem isnt really urgent and Im sure that things could be worked out, right?

The only time we have to worry about being able to handle large populations is if the infrastructure breaks. An example of this is in New Orleans with the hurricane. Aslong as we have the structures in place we can handle huge populations. We are not running out of space on planet earth, that is a misunderstanding.

Aubrey De Grey already has a great plan for rejuvenation and life extension. You can see it here http://www.gen.cam.ac.uk/sens/

I also encourage you to watch some of Aubrey's conferences about anti aging. He answers all the questions that I usually see around here on these forums.

This has truely inspired me to become an immunologist when I "grow up" grin2.gif

EDIT: Sorry for the double post, my stupid connection was laggin And I didn't think the first post went through.

Because if there is not afterlife, then a person would want immortality.

Cool, this means I can keep putting off that whole getting a life thing for awhile. lol

If extra-stellar travel was possible it would be cool to live forever, but not if we are to be stuck here on the Earth. It would get old in a couple hundred years. No wait, 35 years.

Nameless
There are bad side effects to living forever, wouldn't there be? You would take life for granted and the term "live life to your fullest" (cause you never know when your going to die) wouldn't apply.

Wingman: immunologist is a person that researches autoimmune diseases I believe... Maybe you mean a geneticist. She first discovered this sort of rejuvenation back in 1998 while working on MS. Since then she been working on it and is now able to create 'miracle' mice without any problems like cancer.

I personally want to live a long time so I can get to explore the universe and search for other intelligent life. That is impossible with an 80 year life span.... well 60 years now.

I first thought about this when I realized how fast each year is going by and that I only have around 65 of these very fast years left. It seems so short and there is no way I can even explore and see what I want in that amount of time.

I'm sure 80 years is enough for some peoples lives... but not for me, I need thousands of years or more laugh.gif

Most young kids, teens and young adults act like they are immortal and don't really think about all this stuff untill middle age atleast. Thats why there is huge growth in the Anti Aging and supplementation market. The majority of them are baby boomers... people in their 50's who are experiencing aging.

I have no doubt in my mind that the majority of people would like to atleast have a choice of when to die. We already have some choice because we all visit the doctor right? when we have an infection or whatever. We are always looking to extend our lives aslong as that life is a good one and you are not frail. If there is a possibility of having an active healty life rather than sitting in a wheel chair dying in a nursing home... then people will want to live longer.

I would like to live for as long as I saw fit. I don't think I would want to be forced into living forever, but I definitely like the idea of a few hundred years. yes.gif

Next they'll be implementing anti-gravity devices in homes.

We could easily support a population of 13 billion if we took advantage of the right technologies. For example, to get the fallowing we would:

Electricity: Utilize Mark Tomions means of generating electricity.
Water: Utilize Riedys Air~Water machine.
Food: Engineer hemp to have more calories (its already a complete meal; just needs more calories).
Shelter: Have people move into large towers surrounded by parkland and hemp farms.
Hygiene: Make soap and shampoo from hemp oil with oranges.
Textiles: Make clothing from hemp.
Transportation: Walk, Elevators, rent-a-bike, or hop on an automated electric blimp.
Communications/Entertainment: Develop handsized computers with holographic or foldable keyboards and monitors. Utilize touch screens, and blue-ray hard drive. Use these for entertainment and communications. Have all internet wireless for free (it could be automated and powered by a "free" source).

Then we'd simply need a computerized government. It would control all of this and direct the public during a natural disaster... Lol, this sounds far fetched but it could be done and we'd not need money as we'd have a resource based economy.

Got anything more interesting to add to this thread than that?

Good little article I just read about some research on altering metabolic pathways to achieve life extension.

I'd like to live forever....seriously, it would never get tiring if we keep discovering new technologys...
Cryptoking2
now i would not like to be just immortal, i would love to have immortal youth, and also if you get sick and tired of living kill yourself, being immortal does not mean your invincible, plus, we have hundreds of dieseases, and more can be formed, i mean we probably won't have a real problem with over crowding until we can't even fit in all the water on land which i think by then we will probably have killed ourselfs

I have read this article. It is quite interesting. However; I do not think verticle infrastructure would be the best solution. Instead, we could build our cities undergroud, there we would never have to worry about space. Then we could leave the surface to the animals and "primitive" people that do not harm our enviroment.
Nirwana
Underground? There's not much resources there and I really doubt that ppl would like to live down there, colonies in other planets would be the best solution but I still think ppl shouldn't be able to reproduce after being immortal or population growth could get really high on the long run and I don't think much ppl would like to have like 100 sons/daughters..

I don't get it. Every single day this planet gets worse and worse. Someone earlier in this thread said something like (and I'm too lazy to go back and quote it)..."If there is no afterlife, then we can live here forever."

The old saying, "Be careful what you wish for" comes to mind here.

I read a quote from a New Orleans resident when asked to look around at the destruction....and his eye happened upon a dead body floating in the water.

"Lucky bastard", is what he said.

And I gotta agree. If some devastation is heading towards me and I can't get out of the way.....make my death as quick and as painless as possible.

Better than living in hell on this piece of crap rock.

yeah ok sure it is... It may seem like its getting worse because we are able to see whats happening in the world because of our communication capabilities. Aslong as world wars don't break out then I'm perfectly happy on this world for the time being. I see bad things on T.V but why would I let that effect my life? My life is fine at the moment in the U.K and if it stays like that then Im happy to live much longer. Maybe live on another planet someday too thumbsup.gif

Exactly. I'd rather have death as quick as possible rather than spend decades with chronic illnesses and months to years of cancer. By slowing aging you lessen the risk of these chronic diseases and push out diseases further into your life span. There is always things to kill you... but I'm in no hurry to get killed.

Im sorry you have such a bad life. If it gets that bad... you know what to do anyway right? Just because aging could potentially be reversed or slowed doesn't mean bullets are going to bounce off you. rolleyes.gif

Who said you have to live on earth for the rest of your life if you could live for thousands of years?
