The teacher lets us do whatever we want on the comps if we have free time, so i decided to poke into UM, but it was blocked by my school districts web filter, does this happen to anyone else? Why do they block it? I think they considermessage boards a chat room, but i haven't tried any other ones.

Possibly those evil fairies known as gremlins are at work?
... Mind you, I think gremlins are more like imps than fairies...

Most network blockers seek out certain words and layers of code etc and block any sites they find with those in them.
It's not uncommon, you wont find very many public networks that don't block these kind of sites. It's actually one of very few sites not blocked by my work, thankfully.

At my school its one of the very few sites that isn`t blocked even legitimate news sites that we could use for assignments are blocked. They blocked it last year though when they caught me on it, but this year so far so good. Wont matter soon though because I only have 4 and a half weeks of school left, then onto my final exams!!!!!!!

i'm pretty sure the school would have blocked this site because it has a PM system that allows for data transfer. Its considered alternate email, therefore a threat to network security.

It's being filtered because UM is bad for school grades. You just don't get any work done

Seeing how I graduated in 2001 I never had that problem.

And seeing how I didn't find this website until around 2003 something I'm not sure.

My school blocks it because of the occult so if we could just get rid of all the forums but other I think it would work.

I've only just started back today, so I haven't been able to check until now. At mine it allows you to get into UM all right, but it seems to block PMs - it doesn't tell you it does, or why, it just sends you out of the site altogether and back to the opening screen when you first log on, which is really annoying.

It changes at our school sometimes it's blocked sometimes it's not. But we are always updating at our school so maybe thats it.

Okay, since most web blocking programs are third party systems it means that they are downloaded onto the browser not part of the browser. Simply re-install Internet Explorer and it won't be on their anymore. If you do it from the schools main computer it will affect them all because the computers are all connected in some way or another in a school. I think the only way to re-install it is to bring a bootdisk. Or you could just download firefox and make sure it looks just like IE. Change the file names, icons, everything, Then download the plugin that makes it look like IE. If you need anymore help just ask.
