IVF may produce genetically enhanced children
Appear to be taller and have better heart health
Children born through in vitro fertilization are taller and have better heart health than naturally conceived counterparts, according to a new study.
The findings, presented at the annual meeting of the Fertility Society of Australia, hint that IVF alters certain genes—essentially providing IVF kids with enhanced DNA.
According to a news report by The Age, the findings come from a small New Zealand study that involved single IVF births that used fresh rather than frozen embryos.
The study involved 69 IVF and 71 non-IVF children.
IVF children had lower levels of bad cholesterol and higher levels of good. They also had higher levels of growth factor in their blood and were on average four centimeters taller for their age than their natural counterparts.
Further investigation is planned, including to examine the theory that something in IVF alters gene expression.
