It’s late at night, and you receive an urgent phone call from the White House. “The President wants to know why we should continue to put humans in space. He wants a one-page summary on his desk by tomorrow morning.” What do you write?
Lists of reasons for human spaceflight are readily available. The National Space Society has a detailed list, and SPACE.com has its Top 3 and Top 10. Nonetheless, there is a need for a concise list that can be easily recalled—perhaps something like this:
Humans are in space:
3. To work
2. To live
1. To survive

1. Balance population
2. Expand knowledge, experience
3. Get away from mother-in-law

Getting into space and colonizing other planets is something that should be a priority. We have to do it to survive, if we dont start moving out into space, humans will inevitibly become extinct at some point in the future.

agree with Yelekiah, except that 3 should read: ship away all mother-in-law

What this? "hey everybody, since we ruined earth with global warming, pollution, and everything else, let's go out and ruin other planets, too!"
I don't disagree with us going out into space, (ya know, see what's out there) however, i disagree STRONGLY with us colonizing it. (anyone ever read
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury?)

I typed this out in another thread but i'll use it here
"we are all trying to survive, without burning fossil fuels throughout the 20st century, it would be incredibly hard to sustain population growth because we would all be doing a lot more work to find out foods. It was very necessery to go through the 20st century and of course it had downsides of harming the earth but I am confident that with 21st century we can provide for the population all around the world and not harm the earth in big ways as we did in the 21st century.
Without the kinds of breakthroughs that happend in the 19 - 20th century, most of you may not be living today. Even tho we damaged the earth and continue to do so right now, I think that things will get better"
The complexity of it is huge. We just had to go through that whole process of creating pollution to get where we are today as a society. We wouldnt have to do that with some technology that is being developed right now. Technologies that are being developed now or in the near future will be or are envirionmentally friendly.
We will bring out new technology to space that will be much cleaner.

I agree with whoa182 on this matter.
We need to colonize and we need to get out there.
One meteor and we are all dead...

Makes sense to me Mr.Ed, all it takes is a magic shot from a meteor and thats it humanity.

^True and as Whoa said cleaner and moer effecient technologies are being developed and will be used when we are out there in space. Its just that as all our nations are releant upon the use of fossil fuels we cant just stop without everything falling apart, sadly.

I think that we have got to get into space and to other planets as I do not think we have a whole lot longer on this planet at our current rate...either we are going to kill ourselves off or we will get killed off by a meteor or some such thing...As screwed up as we are as a race of people, it would be a shame to lose everything by having all of our eggs in one proverbial basket.
It would be nice to get away from this planet and get a little better perspective...see what the interstellar jones' are up to.
It would be nice to find another world as beautiful as this one, settle down and start over again...discover new natural resources...plunder them mercilessly...destroy the environment... poison ourselves slowly...
...then we can move to yet another planet, start all over again and maybe; just maybe live within the confines of our natural resources.
