Milky Way Collides with Andromeda !

In the constellation of Pisces, some 100 million light-years from Earth, two galaxies are seen to collide - providing an eerie insight into the ultimate fate of our own planet when the Milky Way fatally merges with our neighbouring galaxy of Andromeda.

A while ago I came across this 5 minute flash movie about just this. It gives you an idea of what it may look like to see Andromeda closing in on the Milky Way near the end. Take a look if you want. There are little "Explore More" bubbles that pop up and reveal some interesting tid-bits as well. original.gif

Well, if you read it all, there is a paragraph that says it won't swallow up earth for 5 billion years...
Prof. Ian Robson, Director of the UK Astronomy Technology Centre which built GMOS in collaboration with other partners said,” This is quite scary. Since GMOS was installed on the telescope back in 2001 it has taken some amazing astronomical images of very faint, distant galaxies and star forming regions, providing a wealth of scientific data, but this one sends shivers down my spine. Our saving grace is that we have about 5 billion years left before we get swallowed up by Andromeda. Nevertheless, it’s amazing to see so far in advance how planet Earth and our own galaxy will ultimately end. Glad to say I won’t be around when the fireball happens”.

too bad alot of you are saying what's already been said on this thread...wow! how original... rofl.gif

Why not cool? I can think of at least 100 more terrible ways to die... wink2.gif

Nothing bad is going to happen sheesh. No stars, planets are going to collide and what the chances of them colliding? Pretty astronomically low.
Our barred spiralled galaxy already swallowed a galaxy( no life as it seems too, us?) . In every second brings us 21 miles closer to Andromeda. I wish I was at the time when Andromeda merges* with our galaxy but I guess it would be astronomically boring.

Look straight up some night(northern) and u will see a fuzzy patch that 12 times bigger than the moon..by the time it merges our kids will look like this>> alien.gif

lol!

I think the most scary thing to worry about is Rogue blackholes ph34r.gif . I hear that one is near us!

Before worrying about anything, you must first understand it. And our knowledge of the universe is primitive.

Im pretty sure in 7 billion years we will be able to fly around in space and what not...so the sun blowing up is no problem. Unless of course your stuck on Earth.

Yeah, once we figure out real space travel we'll pretty much be extinction proof. Hell, we may not even remember earth by then.

By "real space travel",do you mean faster than light or...?

Compared to what, exactly? We can only compare it to what we used to know, therefore our knowlege of space is far more advanced then it's ever been.

Well, compared to those guys we are all still in kindergarden.

@primordial is right. A galaxy is mostly empty space. You mustn't imagine that like a car crash. The chance that a sun will run into something is very low. And the Milky Way will not be destroyed, it will just merge with Andromeda. Galaxy mergings happen all the time. Nothing to it.

I guess that depends on what you mean by destroyed.

I sure looks like it would ruin my whole day. hmm.gif

those stars would brighten up my day! ya can't even see most of the stars in the milkyway now, just imagine the pollution in billions of years blocking star light!!

and since when was Star Trek not real!
