Lol, how should we know for sure? At the most some people here can tell you it's possible. Now I would like to know the reasoning behind this theory.

In my opinion, a mirror is reflective glass that I can see myself in. Windows are things I can look out of to see my yard.
That is my opinion.

Those aren't opinions, those are facts.

Not if you're blind..
That seemed like a one-liner, but it's actually a parable. What seems like truth to one is often just opinion to another. Our existence is defined by our perception of it..
That said, I can't see any way a simple mirror would act as a portal to anywhere.

Mirrors can be used to see the other dimension. If you stare long enough, you have an OBE and can step outside of your body and see the other dimension.
I've done it many times, totally awesome experience.
The best experience for me was to be able to look at my eyes, as my body stared straight ahead I step outside and look at my eyes...freaky

Sounds a little strange to me but I don't have all the answers.
I don't see why a window or mirror would be anything other than a window or mirror.

if mirrors and windows were really portals dont you think youd have some odd reports about them rather than just people seeing aparations in them? I mean people see aparations in other places as well, doesnt make those portals to another dimension. I find it kind of silly to believe any man made object can be linked to a spiritual realm in that way, just doesn't make sense.

This is a hard one, I stand on both sides.
Mirrors have made a lot of controversy, mainly because of ancient history. Kings, and Queens would have mirrors, while peasants and the such did not. The peasants believed that they used the mirrors for specific reasons, generally witchcraft or superstition because of their rarity and expensive properties. Because of this, a lot of rumors were created in towns and villages that gave mirrors some magic based property.
However, on the other hand, being adept into Demonology, I am aware of specific rites that are used to bring demons through mirrors, as well as use mirrors for what they call "scrying", which works like a crystal ball. Specific mirrors give different strengths, such as a diamond mirrors , granite, obsidian, crystal, and so fourth. Nostradamus was said to of used an obsidian crystal ball to predict his prophecies, he would see the future while staring into the obsidian ball.

exactly how long are you supposed to stand there looking at yourself in the mirror before you get that out of body experience you are talking about?

If you're inexperienced at OBE's then it's going to take sometime. I suggest practising first. You can get the 'Astral Travelling for beginner's' book at the local library. It gives you some suggestions on how to place yourself in that state between sleep and awake. Once you've mastered that..then it's on to stepping outside of your body....some have to ripped themselves away, others seem to just pop out and yet others float to the ceiling. There is also a tea that you can drink...called the Witche's flying ointment'...that will help you be able to leave your body and travel.
"Remote Viewing' is the same thing, only this is what the military referrs to it as. There is a fantastic book about one soldier's testament on the remote viewing project and how it change his life forever....

In a way it is...but you are in total control instead of someone else. You are consiously aware of what is going on, only you are in a spirit form.

This sort of sounds like a urban legend, like candy man or bloody Mary. Maybe that’s where it all originated from.

Actually, mirrors and opaque glass have been used throughout history as a means of communicating with other dimensions, specifically with the after-life. It carries risks, but this is dependent upon the mindset of the person looking into the mirror.
You can use a small room that can be 'blacked-out' against all light, and use it as a 'psychomanteum'.
The idea being that you get yourself a decent-sized mirror, and place it on one of the walls at a slight tilt upwards towards the ceiling. You then get yourself a comfy chair, and sit in it in the darkend room, and gaze at the mirror. Eventually, your brain activity should diminish enough for your concentration to focus on the sheen of the mirror's surface, and you should start to see shapes at first, swirling around and then eventually figures may start to form out of the shapes and swirls. One of the figures may be a deceased relative.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD YOU ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE OF A NERVOUS DISPOSITION, OR HAVE A HIGH VISUAL IMAGINATION. YOU SHOULD NOT PERFORM THIS WITHOUT SOMEONE BEING WITHIN REACH!!!
Google the word 'psychomanteum' to learn more. but you attempt this at your own risk. It can be a very powerful experience and you could be shocked and rocked by it!

I would recomend examining the folkloric roots of hauntings and their link not to mirrors alone but to reflective surfaces ie; mirrors, water surfaces, polished silver, and most interestingly the viewers own eyes which alone function as a window (to see out of) and a mirror (which reflects) and a visual recording device (with its integral link to the brain). This alos bring to mind the lack of anecdotal evidence of hauntings as witnessed by the blind.
