I think it is highly plausible that an alien microbe that infiltrates earth could cause a biological chain reaction that destroys life on earth. In the future, we (NASA) should avoid bringing back samples from outer space. In fact, I think it should be tested in the space center before bringing it here.

When the astronauts from the Apollo 11 mission came back from the Moon, they had to spend time in de-contamination to make sure that they didn't carry any lunar microbes. NASA took this very seriously.

Personally, I am skeptical about an alien microbe wiping out all life on Earth. There are many problems it would have to face, not the least of which would be figuring out how to survive in a completely alien creature's gut.
