GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Wildlife biologists believe that black-footed ferrets released into the wilds of Colorado are thriving — and breeding — as the state tries to build a self-sustaining population of the mammal considered to be the rarest in North America.

About 170 ferrets have been released in Colorado, mostly on
Bureau of Land Management land. Recent population counts in northwestern Colorado have convinced state biologists that the animals are reproducing.

"Seeing so many is very encouraging," said Pam Schnurr, a Colorado Division of Wildlife biologist. "And the fact that we saw so many means that there are a lot more out there."

One captured female was lactating, meaning she gave birth earlier this summer.

Black-footed ferrets were thought to be extinct until a dog dropped a dead ferret on a rancher's doorstep in northwestern Wyoming in 1981 and a small group was found in a prairie dog colony.

The last confirmed sighting of the animal in Colorado was in 1943.

Since the discovery in Wyoming, about 3,000 ferrets have been bred in captivity and released in various states.

Biologists estimate there are a total of 400 ferrets in the wild in Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, Arizona and Colorado.

Environmentalists welcomed news of the Colorado program's progress, but said hurdles remain.

"We still have a lot of work to do, and we still have to work on recovering prairie dog populations so the ferrets can survive," said Jacob Smith, executive director for the Center for Native Ecosystems in Denver.

"The ferret has been listed under the Endangered Species Act for a long time, and this is a great example of that legislation preventing the extinction of another animal," Smith said.

Ferrets are nocturnal and prey on prairie dogs.

that is great news! I love hearing about endangered animals making a comeback.. and to think.. they thought those ferrets were extinct!

Great find, JennRose and ty for sharing it ... thumbsup.gif

PS: Ferrets are so cute... one of my good friends has 3 of them as pets and they are so cuddly and funny to watch tongue.gif

I think ferrets are great, myself. They are so cute and affectionate, and super-clever!

And I'm sure our resident #1 ferret fan Disinterested will be very pleased to read this as well. tongue.gif

I wonder which part of Co. they were released in. I've looked up Bureau of Land Management land but that is pretty vague.

Does anyone know?

Based on a weeklong counting operation in late August, biologists are confident that ferrets are thriving and breeding in the wild in northwest Colorado. Pam Schnurr, a wildlife conservation biologist with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW), said that ferrets were spotted in the 20,000-acre Wolf Creek Management Area located about 20 miles northeast of Rangely.

Rangely, I circled in red and the X on the map is the area (or about) where the ferrets were released. original.gif

Always nice to hear about animals coming back. yes.gif

wow, tyvvm Kratos - you are so helpful thumbsup.gif

You know it's funny. Studying my own 4 lovely darlings, i find it very hard to believe how they ever survived in the wild in the first place. laugh.gif They can barely feed themselves.

The Back-Footed must be much much smarter than your average domesticated, that's for sure. It's such good news to hear they're still around and getting stronger in numbers. original.gif

There is a variety of ferret smarter than the domesticated kind? I certainly hope they are not as energetic...They would take over the world!

Awww, that's so sweet! Black footed ferrets are so cute.

It's pretty amazing that they just found these ferrets all of a sudden, and they're doing well. I'd love to see a wild ferret... after seeing my domesticated ones with NO sense of danger, it would be cool to see.

XSAS i appreciate your opinion and the fact that not everyone likes them, but the way you said it was offensive and downright disturbing. Please be mindful of what you say.
XSAS
Horrid animals along with Mink especially to those that have Hens? What is disturbing Burnsy is the after effects of an attack from these animals on other pets.
JennRose
Some animals are predators, XSAS, that's just the way Nature works. We can protect our domesticated animals from attackers, but that does not in any way give us the right to wipe out an entire species bc we disapprove of them.
BurnSide
XSAS what was disturbing is you delighting in the fact that these animals which are mostly pets of other people make nice accessories. You can keep those comments to yourself. thumbsup.gif

Pretty sure he can voice his opinion... you don't need to agree, as you cleary don't. As said in the past, strong opinions doesn't mean they should be edited or such. (referring to PM's from mods about Faeden's comments, as I recall a "doubled edged sword" on opinions here. thumbsup.gif )

Ferrets do make nice pets... if treated right. Wild animals are in fact... wild. So I do see where XSAS is coming from. yes.gif

Offensive, unsuitable comments made are always removed, regardless of opinion. That's the whole point of having moderators, Kratos. The post was reported to me as being offensive to certain members, and i agreed and removed it. That is the proper way to deal with remarks some members might consider offensive.
I don't remember Faeden ever making similar remarks.
If anyone has any objection to this, they are free to send me a PM to discuss it. The forums are not the place.
Back on topic.

Well hopefully this breed of wild ferret that was thought to be extinct is not the last species of animal that we thought extinct that makes a comeback!

So nice to know that something is being done to help our furry friends... thumbup.gif

Jen,

I never suggested wiping out an entire species and I don't disaprove of them.

I am not suggesting a cull of these animals hell no, I would be the first to fight any action taken against a wild animal but I am well within my rights to also defend my own animals, be it a Ferret, Mink or Human that tried to harm them.
Tia
What I find interesting is they reintroduce a species which then takes over the homes and lives of prairie dogs.

Some prairie dogs are also considered endangered. It seems pretty moronic to me.
