On a recent trip to Savannah Georgia I picked up a book on the ghosts of the city, Savannah is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the US.....My question is why? People die all the time why do you think that souls seem to stay in some areas more then others? Is it just that people don't notice them as much in other places? I don't understand why some places would be more haunted then others if it's the fact that the city is so old doesn't even add up since some of the ghosts have stayed in places that have been demolished and rebuilt.......any ideas?

I think that some parts of Georgia have a history of violence (and this isn't attributed to the Civil War alone). And some people say that certain unnatural deaths leave energies. I think perhaps that's what may have happened.

I think the same thing yelekiah... I have always heard that unnatural deaths tend to leave behind energy... I don't know though...

Savannah sounds like a beautiful place. I have always wanted to visit there.
My personal belief is that there are two kinds of "hauntings". First, is only detected by people sensitive to these things. In many cases, this is not an actual ghost haunting a place but an energy left behind that the medium (for lack of a better word) can pick up on. Remember that time is a funny thing. It's intangible, not truly understandable, and I think what it comes down to is that some people are more keenly aware that things that happened long ago can linger and you can feel it. I hope that makes sense. The second kind of haunting would be the typical kind. A spirit which for some reason can't/won't/hasn't moved on. I have never subscribed to the theory that a ghost is more or less likely to stay given the circumstances of their death. I don't think that places with a violent history are more likely to have ghosts because the people suffered there. In fact, if they suffered, they would be in one heck of a hurry to get up on out of there. The reason these places (asylums, prisons, hospitals, etc) have more ghostly activity is simply due to numbers. More people died there so hence there is more potential for hauntings.
You must also take these books and shows about haunted locations with a grain of salt because much of that stuff is used as a tourist attraction. Ghost tours make a lot of money and portraying the city as a haunted city can be quite profitable. In all honesty, there is potential for hauntings anywhere where people have died and what does that tell you? Ghosts can be anywhere.

I am completely envious.... I would LOVE to see Savannah! Not just for the spooks either!
Maybe it is more "haunted" because of the history of violence. Families also seem to have lived in the same area for generations, maybe the having had roots in one place for so long has something to do with it as well. Could it also be the atmosphere?
Also, if I am right, Savannah has a history of "voodoo". Maybe that is a contributing factor?
I dunno..... But, I hope you had a good time!

Certain people have a sense and have a feeling when something is wrong, and no doubt are more sensitive to the aurora around them. It also might well be something to do with the earths natural boundaries and magnetic energies. I'm not sure whether those who have that sense are lucky or tainted with the fact that they cannot live day by day like many of us 'mortals' who are more pre-occupied with day to day living.
it is difficult to overlook the coincidence of the haunting with the scene of a horrific death, but there are many places that seemingly have no 'memory' of an incident.......or do they? Roads, buildings or environments that have fallen pray to unexpected deaths should in theory record the tragic incidents.
My other half is very sensitive to her enviroment and knows if there's something or someone wrong and I'm so in awe of her gift.

I am a devoted fan of Savannah, and Charleston as well. Beyond the age and history of the city, which would be more than enough to account for it's being so haunted, there are other theories as well.
There are some that believe that General Oglethorpes design for the city was based in freemasonry or the Biblical design of Solomon's Temple.
In addition there is also the theory that the Creek and Choctaw used the area as a burial ground long before Ogelthorpe settled the city.
I have also read that areas close to water seem to have more paranormal activity.
