Sandman and Venom = Great visuals and kick ass action
But Venom, Topher Grace is not. Eddie Brock is a body builder... He's big, bulky and tough looking. He's an every day guy. He's a guy who hasn't always had many breaks in life. He looses his wife and his life reaches rock bottom because of Spider-Man so when he gains the power that the alien symbiote gives him, the joint hatred he and the symbiote share for Spiderman take over to create the twisted, menacing Venom. Nothing about Topher says that...
I can see him as Ultimate Venom who is more similar to Peter Parker than his 616 counterpart. Which is one reason why I think they have chosen Topher. Rami said that Topher was chosen because he is a good actor and right for the complexities of the character he will play. They have picked Topher because he is similar to Tober MacGuire and they can play up the old school friend angle, like his origin on the Ultimate Venom character. I haven't seen Topher act in anything other than That 70's Show but I just can't see the fit at all.. Topher just does not seem twisted, menacing, evil, angry, complex etc at all...
It is also too early to introduce Venom. He can't be done justice in 1 film, his backstory would take more than one movie to explain, unless they go with something similar to the Ultimate origin (in which the Venom suit is a cure for cancer gone wrong). They are also trying to fit too much in... There's Sandman who is likely to be more than just a minor villain considering they have got Thomas Hayden Church to play him, there's Harry and his story and the possibility of him turning into Green Goblin 2 or Hobgoblin, there's Aunt May stuff and then there's the cheesy obligatory Peter and MJ stuff.
There is also Peter in the black suit. This is an iconic moment in comics and something that Sony Execs would be stupid to miss out. Millions of fans would cry out if this was ommitted... So You have to introduce the concept of Venom, Have Peter wear the black suit, have the suit pass on to Eddie and have Eddie become Venom... Too much for one movie!
It is also too early because they haven't finished off the Goblin saga - The story involving Harry walking in his fathers footsteps and becoming Green Goblin 2 (or Hobgoblin as it most likely will be in the movie) and final fight between the two once best friends... You can't have the intensisty of that as well as Sandman, MJ stuff and Venom.
So what are they doing? Are they gonna have Eddie become Venom at the end and leave him for SM4 or are they gonna have Harry behind the scenes and finally become the Goblin in SM6? But that would be too drawn out and this could be Raimi's and these actors last movie... It would be much better for Raimi to finish the saga he started and then have a new director start up the Venom saga for SM4 - SM6.
At the end of the day though I can put up with Topher as Venom. I mean it hasn't even been made official by Marvel or Sony. It could all be a sham to put people off. But If Topher is Venom, as wrong for the part as he is, he might turn out ok and I can put up with it... But I would have much rather seen Liev Schreiber (Cotton Leary in Scream 2) play Eddie Brock/Venom.
In another recent interview with MTV Kirsten Dunst let more slip saying that she 'thinks there are 2 and a half villains in SM3...'
Now I'm thinking that Sandman will be a big or main villain, Harry will be another villain either changing into a Goblin or pulling the strings behind the scenes and Topher will will be introduced as Eddie Brock - hence half a villain. Either that or Sandman and Venom are the two villains and Harry counts as the half a villain.
She also mentioned something about a ressurection, which could mean either Norman returns as the Green Goblin or in the sense that Green Goblin (2) returns as Harry.
It should be noted that Kirsten Dunst has 'messed up' before. In an interview before SM2 started production she let slip that Doc Ock and The Lizard were in the film and we got Doc Connors but not his alter ego, The Lizard. So maybe when she says Venom, really, she just means Eddie Brock.
I'm thinking that Harry will have a hand in creating Sandman and maybe even Venom. Now as I said Venom can't be done justice in one movie so I am hoping that if Topher is Eddie, that he will become Venom at the end of the movie as a cliff hanger and be the main villain in SM4.
At any rate, if Sandman and Venom are indeed the villains we will be in for some kick ass action. Aerial battles with Spidey and Venom and Sandman will be stunning on screen as nothing has been done like it before.
But we can also expect another average film... Both Spidey films have been fairly average. They have kick ass action as Raimi is a great visionary director but you can tell he is a B-Movie style director (and his style does suit Spider-Man which makes the action so great) but, especially in SM2, there have been scenes, mainly to do with MJ and Peter's love for her that have been down right cheesy... That is where the likes of Sin City, X2, Batman Begins and Blade hold up over Spider-Man because it is an entertaining movie but on mutiple viewings because of the cheese factor, it does get rather irritating/boring, unlike X2 etc which hold up well.
Anyway, as long as we don't get another burning building...

As it is, right now, I am looking more forward to Ghost Rider, X-Men 3 and Superman Returns than I am Spider-Man 3.
