Another name for gossip is 'backbiting', a major detriment to humanity's Spiritual progress. This is what the prophet Muhammad had to say about it: he asked, "Do you know what backbiting is? It is the disclosing by one of you of what he hates in his brother." A man said to him, "But what if it be in my brother?" The prophet replied, "If it be in him as you say, then you have backbitten him; and if it be not in him as you say, then you have falsely accused him of it."
