And if so how in the HELL isn’t this ILLEGAL??????

Please someone tell me how this is right and fair to people like me who don't believe?

the sad thing is alot of people beleive this as a message from God showing his anger, its a level of understanding of what you are aware in life you demonstrate It does seem the majority of people who belive that are religious, I have friends that have said the exact same thing I just gently try to raise there understanding its certainly not out of the question for those in power to see this as aj ustification for something what who knows, 78% of the population beleive in the bible 20 something are athiest or agnostic and 4% have transcended dualistic beliefs , We have to be patient the rest will eventually will cathch up although growth is slow it is changing , I am with yo u i shake my head in disbeleif ...NamastemSheri

Natural catastrophes, such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, have absolutely nothing to do with God's "anger". I totally agree with you in that regard, Sheri. Mankind is in the habit of blaming God for every disaster under the Sun, when the main cause of these natural catastrophes is the wholesale environmental destruction instigated by humanity itself. There was a recent topic posted on the "Spirituality vs. Scepticism" forum about the many 'sins of God'. As usual, mankind has to have a scapegoat (God), as a convenient way of avoiding responsibility for its often harmful, destructive actions.
Let us look at the 'Old Testament'. The writers of that scripture refer often to God's anger and vengeance against those who are, supposedly, 'enemies' of God and His "Chosen People", the Jewish race. The writers say that the Lord ordered them to destroy whole cities without mercy, initiating massacres worthy of the Nazi excesses of WW2. There is NO WAY that a GOD OF LOVE would ever order such wholesale slaughter in His/Her Name! Obviously, the Old Testament writers are confusing lesser "gods" with the Infinite, Eternal Creator God of Universal Love. The "Lord" who exacts revenge on his enemies is NOT the Universal Spirit of Love, NOT the Great White Spirit who created the universe. Rather, the "Lord" refers to various lesser evolved beings (so-called "gods") who descended from the skies in mighty "chariots of Fire", in other words, in SPACECRAFT! Some of these space beings were highly advanced spiritually, but others were not. The latter had mighty, godlike mental powers and advanced technology, but were lagging behind spiritually. And these were the beings (the "Lord") who ordered Israel to commit massacres in God's Name!
All the cruelty, vengeance and judgmental mentality contained in the 'Old Testament" was in NO WAY initiated by the Creator God/Goddess. Rather, the sole responsibility rests on the shoulders of ancient humanity and lesser evolved Space Beings in the guise of a judgmental, wrathful God of vengeance. yes.gif

And eco-whackos are quick to lay the blame for natural events on man . . . even though these natural events would happen if there were no humans on earth at all. One group is as bad as the other.

I guess the biggest problem I have with this is the state actually helping fund and promote the church...
There is nothing wrong with faith-based initiatives, so long as they are treated on an equal playing field with non-faith-based organizations.

This from the blog on the same sight of the article I think sums up what I really find offensive about this whole situation.

QUOTE

The first comment in this thread is a brief from American Atheists on how politicians are using the hurricanes to push through bills that encourage faith-based charity donations, as well as further protections and broader usage of the organizations themselves.

Something needs to be made very clear: There is nothing wrong with faith-based initiatives, so long as they are treated on an equal playing field with non-faith-based organizations. Up until Pres W took office, there were federally-funded FBIs who did charity work, but they had to obey the same laws as everyone else, specifically:
1) They had to help everyone the same way, regardless of religion
2) They had to follow ethical hiring rules
3) They could not proselytize
4) They could not use the funds they received to help their church grow, renovate, or proselytize.

That's it! Now, people are saying that we need these groups --and I agree, IF they are willing to be treated equally and serve the public good selflessly.

Now, with the new laws, they can do exactly the same things they could do before, PLUS discriminate and preach. Folks, if discriminating and preaching is what they really want to do, they shouldn't be getting federal funds to perform charity work!

It seems to me that the current administation has blurred all lines between separation of church and state and they are using natural disasters to make it even worse...
As a person who does not agree with religion and am faced with it every day it is not easy for me to stomach the fact that promoting and encouraging this when in fact I am suppose to live in a country where there are suppose to be laws against such actions
