When the XBox360 was released in Japan, it received a 'luke warm' sell out laugh.gif . I guess it didn't sell very well in Japan. However, I am finding the fan base of the PS3 in both Gamespot and Ign to be greater than the XBox360. And Ninteno's Revolution is holding a lot of interest through out the Nintendo communities, as well as the others.
Byuu94
If I recall, I remeber hearing that the Xbox 360 is selling in Japan worse than the Xbox did.
Most of the focus there is on the PS3 and Revolution.

Heres some figures I found from http://www.cubed3.com that show how all console have fared over in Japan. As you can see the poor X-box did not do too well. Its all Sony and Nintendo.

Hardware - This Week | Last Week | 2005 Sales | 2002-2005 Total Units Sold

2.) PSP - 86,403 | 92,121 | 1,832,848 [ 2,315,200 ]

So i guess ill put in my opinion. Im a backer of the xbox 360 for various reasons

1) It comes out sooner

2) The Price (im in canada so its like 100 bucks more expensive per version but ps3 will be way to expensive 700+ )

3) For Call of Duty 2 and Gears of War

4)New DVD player

5) XBL

The xbox 360 is an all around system IMO because no there will barely be any games that will be fully online olny FF12 and World of Warcraft if that ever happens there making XBL cheaper and you can play for free on the weekends from what ive heard the backwards compatibility is easy to use they already have a crap load of games out for almost every genre RPG being the exception wich is probably why their sales died in japan MS should of saw that one coming. ya i'll admit that the PS3 will have way better graphics then the xbox 360 but that means nothing. With the current gen rite now i would have to say Game cube has the best graphics and yet it doesnt get the best sales because it has a crappy selection except the RE games and zelda. Anyways i would have to say that right now its a tie if not the 360 is winning by a bit because they have an amazing seletions already

PS to the person that has the 360 ive been trying to get one and im just wondering does the cables that come with the premium version work with normal tvs and does it come with a wireless network adapter umm if you got the core version just ignore this completly

There are quite a few more quality games then that but you do have a point. Nintendo need far greater third-party support if they are to have any chance of retaking number one position with their next-generation console.
Super Pancake
Were do people get the idea that nintendo does not have third party support they had plenty far more then the 64. Despite the fact accoriding to press and gamer reviews and polls the 64 was the best system ever, the Cube was better then the 64 in everyway possible.

Its just they did not get the games you wanted, like GTA.
Dowdy
Marketing only really gets sales for the first 6 months of the product coming out. What will make it a success in the long run is word of mouth. But im going to PS3 only because i heard you can use it as sorta like a control center for your home theatre. Imagine playing games on a 142cm LCD while having surround sound and it's all controlled from the PS3 thumbsup.gif

A lot of computer development companies and other new upstarts have stormed the market in the last console generation. The cube had most of the same third party support as the N64 had, exept for Rare (which wasn't a loss at all).

They will make up some lost ground, because Square-Enix is throwing more support behind the Revolution and Ubisoft is already working on a "Doom-like" FPS exclusive for the Revolution. And I'm sure others will follow.

AztecInca
^Indeed. Hopefully all these companies follow up their positive words about the Revolutions new controller and actually make some awesome Nintendo exclusive games.

Well of course they have third-party support but not as much as their competitors did and if they can at least match them with their next-generation console they will be in a very good position.
Super Pancake
I think you might be getting third party mixed up with second party.

Third part are multiplateforms or multiconsole games, like Prince of Persia, viewtiful joe, soul calibur 2, Time Splitters etc. These games come out on all the systems. Also to note third party games don't need to come out on all the systems games like Mercenary

Second party games are games that are contracted by Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft to be exclusive to their system definitely or for a period of time. Such has Resident Evil 4 was exclusive to the Gamecube till the contract was over, or GTA-SA contracted to the ps2 till it was over then ported to the X-box and PC. As for game that are only exclusive to one system are games like FF, Kingdom Hearts, and SC3 on the PS2, and Fable, Ninja Gaiden, DOA, and Marrowind on the X-box, and games like Rouge Leader, and a bunch of disney games, thats pretty much of what i can think of right now on the Gamecube.

And of course first party games are game made by the Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft or the companies they own, that exclusively make games on their systems.

Rare was a company contracted by Nintendo they were a second party team. And don't forget a lot of companies tanked or merged with a bigger company.

I guess you dont know the story about Square's support on the 64. The only reason they did not release ff 64 was because at the time the president of nintendo (I forgot his name) did not want them to make a game on the 64 after the president of Square made a negative comment on nintendo. Its only recently Iwata and Squre with relaese on the gameboy and crystal chronicles are finally coming together. Same with Capcom until they finally decided to do business at the end when Resident Evil 2 came out during the last few years of the 64.

Infact I still think Nintendo and Capcom/Square still has this love hate relationship.

Yes, but Nintendo was very strict with what games were on their systems and how they were done. For instance, the censoring of the SNES Mortal Kombat. Add this rocky relationship with the limited space on the cartridges and the fact that CDs were cheaper, and it is easy to understand why Square-Enix left at the time.
What I was saying is that Square-Enix has a lot more interest in the DS and Revolution than they did in the Gamecube. The president of SE himself wanted to make a basketball game on the DS, but then decided it would be more suitable to use Nintendo characters in it. They're also making a 3D Final Fantasy 3, and Crystal Chronciles for the DS and Revolution.

Games that are contracted to be exclusives on a console are usually third-party. This whole party thing is about who develops the games. Super Mario RPG is a second-party game because Square and Nintendo worked on it together. Although RE4 was one of several contracted games to appear only on the Gamecube, Capcom developed the game by itself with no input from Nintendo.

thats all true about the cartridge, and strict rules on the content on the nintendo, but no the Nintendo president during the 64 days hated Square. He did not want to work with them or have any of their games on the 64. kind of sucks those FF 64 screens, and video finally came out a few months ago. Makes you wonder what could have been.

I'm glad to see some ff games on the Nintendo. I just hope they keep the game mechanics of Crystal Chronicles I thought they were the best of all the ff games I just did not like the whole four player and gameboy thing.

You might be right, I might be right. They should come out with a dictionary on videogame jargon.

The multiplayer was very good, but the whole connectivity thing meant that you had to have all the hardware. It'll work a lot better with the DS version.

hi again. well i fiinnaly got my xbox 360 and ive done pretty much everything there is to do with it except making it a media center. anyways the graphics are amazing same with the interface its so easy to do everything on the system like ripping a cd connecting to the internet changing your themes and locating gamertags ( i dont no about the media center) and then it keeps getting better, once you connect to the interenet by hooking up 1 cable you get a silver membership thats all the benefits of xbl without being able to play online plus one free month of xbl gold and then you can download movie and game trailers arcade games demos game demos and all for free except you hafta use gamer credits to get the full arcade game theres more stuff you can download to but im not gonna list it you can even play online with some of the demos. the microphone system works easily and its also very easy to connect wireless controller once you figure out that you have to press a button on the controller and then one on the xbox grin2.gif very little lag online so overall i would say

xbox 360 out of 4.5/5 just because some of the systems malfunctionned but mine works fine btw

xbl 4.5/5 because of the slight chance that you will play with an idiot or the host will leave before the game starts

interface 5/5 it couldnt be simpler

o and by the way im not just saying all this because i own the system i actually LOATHE the first xbox because it has nothing good to offer it had a hard drive dvd player and online gaming with the 360 theres so much more so really i dont think ps3 stands a chance and im saying that as a sony fanboy

ps i also bought an old xbox game crimson skys and its works perfectly it easily downloads the patch and allows you to play against people with normal sbl to!

The PS3 is totally going to win the console war. I'm not too impressed with the 360. hmm.gif

"Sigh" Such informed comments drive me insane. There are a number hardcore games already released on the Wii and numerous others coming out in the future, Please do some reserach on current and future games libraries. The Wii may not have a massive amount of what you classify as 'hardcore' games yet, however it has been out for less than a year and those types of games are coming. In the coming final quarter of the year the Wii has 86 games coming out compared to 47 for the 360 and 38 for the PS3. In terms of 'kiddie' games, children have always been a specific demographic that Nintendo have targeted and they will continue to do so as they have a significant foothold in that portion of the market.

Anyway its intersting to see how few people believed the Wii or 360 would win the "console war" and how so many believed the PS3 would easily win. With the Wii and 360 already around 12 million each and the PS3 trailing behind at only 4.5-5 million, Sony are goinng to have their work cut out for them. Although I do believe Sony will have a much better year next year, with price reductions and increased quality titles coming out.

It seems your defenition of a core game is different from mine..

Im talking games with AAA level production values...new IPS..games that utilize online and new engines...the 2nd and 3rd parties ARE pushing out some good material (MP3, NMH, BWII) but Nintendo is too focused on milking its old franchises (mario party, zelda crossbow) and keeping back from any real development in the consoles online (friendcodes) that its going to be up to the FEW third parties that are NOT porting the the Ps2, to pick up the slack..

Pwese, understand ma opinions.

I understand your position and opinion Inhuman and to an extent I agree although I do not believe that Nintendo have failed anyone. Zelda crossbow is simply a free/cheap(not sure) instruction demo that comes with the Zapper peripheral. It makes sense that they use a familiar Nintendo character to show how the zapper works. Mario Party while not the greatest game by any stretch of the imagination is still fun for multi-player. Every gaming company will as you put it, 'milk' their popular franchises as they are in the business of making money, its simple economics. Mario Galaxy by all accounts will be one of Nintendo's finest creations and a true next-gen product. They will and are producing a number of quality AAA titles that while being from already existing franchises are still brilliant. They are also working on a few new I.P`s, however they do not like talking about that, Nintendo can be very secritive when they want. Anyway give Nintendo and the Wii time, its hasn`t even been out for a year yet. The DS after about the same amount of time had barely any games full-stop and now look at it. Countless AAA, quality titles and hardware sales of nearly 50 million.

i remember when i first heard that PS3 was coming out. i listened to all the hype and how it was such a superior system with all the awesome games that they said were coming out for it. i was so existed i thought to my self... this is going to be so cool Microsoft doesn't stand a chance in hell! but then they came out with the price. i was in shock at first thinking it was just a bad roomer. but then i found out that it was true. it was as if some one took careful aim at all my hopes and shot them out of the sky with a bazooka. now most of those games have gone cross gen and i realized that the only reason it had sold so well in the beginning was because people knew they could sell it on eBay to all the stupid fan boys for a huge mark up. even those who bought it to play it started selling there systems thinking that with the money they got from it they could buy it back when it was more available plus with some new games to boot. but look at them now! there not even selling half as well as the other two and the game developers are starting to jump Sony's sinking ship and go cross gen. but who knows maybe they will bounce back in time. but from the looks of things there time in the sun is over.

Lol welcome to last year...it's already happened.

Nintendo's success will continue through the holiday season and well into next year. MS will continue on the path they are currently on and will close the gap a bit between them and Nintendo. If Sony needs a few triple A blockbuster games and to rethink their pricing strategy...or just give consumers a real reason to be interested in their console.

Nintendo is dominating the industry at the moment but have yet to prove their staying power...theoretically all interest in the Wii could drop at any moment. It needs to prove that it is not a fad and continue to sell as many units as it is currently doing.

MS doing what they intended to do with the 360...with the exception of the hardware problems it hasn't failed on its vision.

Nintendo's success was unexpected and if everything continues as they will 'win' the war but that doesn't mean MS or even Sony can't make their money too.

My predictions for the future:

* The Wii will have strong sales for some time, before the sales rate decreases when people lose interest in the controls. Sales-wise I think it will be the winner, even if its hardware is outdated compared to the PS3 and the 360. The only thing that might make people lose interest quickly is if Nintendo doesn't keep coming with strong inhouse games, and when Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy have been released, Nintendo have spent all their major franchises, and I don't think games like that Zelda zapper game, Wii Golf and such are enough to attract lots of people.

* The 360 will be the winner of the two consoles aimed at the "hardcore" demographic. It's snagged a few exclusives from PS3, and it's got an impressive lineup of games. The only thing left to fix is the RROD (an estimated failure rate of 33% is simply not acceptable).

* The PS3 will be number three, mainly due to its high launch price, a lack of launch titles and, at least for the moment, few exclusive AAA titles. Next year will be better, but I don't think there's any real chance of the PS3 managing to close in on the sales of the Wii and 360 in only a year.

I think Sony were too arrogant and had too much belief in their brand before the launch of PS3, but the high price and the lack of games put a lot of people off. I'll most likely be getting a PS3 sometime in the future when the price has been cut again, and God of War 3 has been released. The interesting thing is that despite the high retail price, it seems like the PS3 has outsold the Wii in Europe (according to sales numbers from vgcharts). But then again, Europe has been Sonyland since the release of the PS1.

Incorrect, the Wii has far greater sales than the PS3 in Europe, however in a couple of european countries the PS3 is outselling the 360 on a weekly basis and has an overall lead over the Wii, in Spain and Italy. In all major regions in Europe however the Wii is easily and consistently outselling both the 360 and PS3. In Australia, the Wii is only just outselling the PS3 on a weekly basis, while the 360 just trails both, it is quite close down under on a weekly basis anyway. Australia has always been a strong market for Sony, so I expect the PS3 to eventually surpass the 360 down under and finish a close second to the Wii. Price cuts and next years game's line-up with definately get the PS3 to a far more competitive position.

Yeah, my assumption in my previous post was based on miscalculations from my side. The Wii is indeed outselling the PS3 in most countries (although IIRC the PS3 did outsell the Wii for a week or so in Europe after the price cut was official). It's interesting to see Nintendo selling so much here, as both the N64 and Gamecube were met with rather lukewarm response in Europe IIRC (not that they were insanely popular in other parts of the world, but oh well..).

The PS3 has Talladega Nights. Best game ever made.

Seriously though, the PS3 has precious few good games (not that I'd say the Wii has any more games I'd find interesting, in fact, I think the Wii has even fewer games I'd be interested in), so there's little use in buying it for the games currently available. It's not until the PS3 gets a better selection of games it'll be any point in getting it.
