Good question.
I'm not much for believeing dates. What I see are parallels between different cultures prophecy. The point is that a new earth is supposed to start. Life on earth will not end. That is a very popular but wrong assumption. Life as we know it will be different for sure, but it's hard to say just exactly what if anything will happen. Chaos will erupt as natural disaters increase, and as natural resources decrease, resulting in social chaos. This will lead to wars to maintain the status quo, and many will be sacraficed for humanity to continue. Things are not getting better, they are continually getting worse.
To answer your question, hopefully they will have awesome video games with lifelike graphics. I live up north, and it's freezing in December, so I will probably sit in my house, get loaded and play the latest Halo. Hmmm Halo, or

Absolute utter chaos. Both should be fun.

im not sure who you may be refering to but i dont think there are actually that many that are worried about it--in reality the mayans have demonstrated, although with the many theories and hype it may have been lost among the multitude, that it mearly denotes a larger "cycle" similar to the precession of the equinox but on a grander scale where our solar system completes a large rotation in relation to our galaxy

I thought the mayans thought of 2012 as a new begining.
You don't have to be a prophet to come to the conclusion we might not last too much longer, if what is going on right now keeps up.
I definately think something big is going down.
I don't think it is armegeddon however.

Hate to break it to ya, but it's about a new time of renewal and starting over again-the Mayans believed in a cyclical history. The "doomsday" scenarios are about as credible as those cheesy e-mail 'chain' lettes you get from some kid of a deposed dictator promising you money if you send him some first.

I think that most peoples belief that there is going to be a catastrophe on Dec 12 2012 is based on a misunderstanding of the Mayan Calender, the Mayans didnīt say that the world was going to end on that date just that it was the end of this age, this being, if i remember correctly the 4th age.

The person who posted "3..2..1..kaboom oh that was a firecracker" is assuming that 2012 is the end. And that is why a firecracker would be a false explosion, if you will.
Im saying that as far as I can see; and as far as I have read on the subject 2012 is a new begining. Mabey as simple as a new time period. Mabey a far more spiritual happening.
That is what i think.

muddyfrog is right, it's supposed to mark a new beginning, not THE END. This is the third thread on the subject where an incomplete notion has spun into a life of it's own.

And yes Awwa, you are correct as well. We'll all wake up the next day to find things-the same as they were previously. It's just that instead of a materialistic, mind-numbing society, we'll see a great era of creativity and spiritual resurgence like no other...if people take advantage of it.

Wikipedia clearly states:
December 21 - End of the great cycle of the Maya calendar's Long Count and a 26,000 year planetary cycle in the Aztec calendar, and thus the alleged end of our world (the end of the cycle is dated December 23 by some calculations).

End of the world? The turn of the great cycle is conjectured to have been of great significance to the Maya, but does not necessarily mark the end of the world. According to the Popol Vuh, a sacred book of the Maya, they were living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three worlds that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. The Maya believed that the fourth world would end in catastrophe and the fifth and final world would be created that would signal the end of mankind.
The last creation ended on a long count of 13.0.0.0.0. Another 13.0.0.0.0 will occur on December 21, 2012, and it has been discussed in many New Age articles and books that this will be the end of this creation or something else entirely. However, the Maya abbreviated their long counts to just the last five vigesimal places. There were an infinitely larger number of units that were usually not shown. When the larger units were shown (notably on a monument from Coba), it is expressed as 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0, where the larger units are obviously supposed to be 13s in all larger places. In this age we are only approaching 0.0.0.0.0.0.13.0.0.0.0, and the larger places are nowhere near the 13s that would match the end of the last creation.
This is confirmed by a date from Palenque, which projects forward in time to 1.0.0.0.0.0, which will occur on October 13, 4772. The Classic Period Maya obviously did not believe that the end of this age would occur in 2012. There will be a Baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of a 400 year period, but not the end of the age.

I believe its the 21st of December. However it's not a prophecy. According to the Mayan and Aztec calander it marks the end of one calander and the beginnig of another, or the fifth sun. Some believe this is when we have a polar shift, which means we wil be able to utilize more areas of our brain, because we will be on a different frequency. Some believe we will be able to access the fourth and fifth dimension. which is why the government is afraid of it and doesn't want it to happen. see, if the earth isn't in balance it won't happen. If it does we will be more powerful as one individual than the entire government. If it doesn't, oh well. There is one prophecy that will happen eventually and that's all that matters too me
