Who in their right mind would choose that?!

I CAN understand it, but I wouldn't do it. There just isn't a concept that I believe so strongly in it to die for it.

I would happily die for a number of things.
He chose to die for what he believed in. Exile, to him, was worse than death.

Yes, but I can't think of anything important enough to die for.

It's not like you would be able to enjoy what you died for.

Ok for those who don't know....

Socrates had to make the choice between death or exile. He chose death. This makes more sense if you understand what exile meant back in his day... Very similar to feudal Europe, the seperate city states were very closed off. People didn't travel far in their lifetime. Your home, your city, the place you grew up in, meant everything. To be exiled was to never see your home again, to never see the people you love again. (Think Romeo being banished in Romeo and Juliet. Banished = REALLY BAD. A punishment equal to death.)

I chose exile, mostly because I live in an age where exile isn't so horrible. Can I request being exhiled closer to my boyfriend or my mother please? wink2.gif

If I had to choose between dying or exile, I would've chosen death at that point in history.

Being a martyr for a cause at that point in history had more impact than it does these days.

Even today, I would willingly risk my life for the ideals I abide by.

In those days, exile was considered worse by a lot of people.

The Greeks weren't overly fond of barbarians. Barbarians being anyone who wasn't Greek.
Exile would have meant living amongst barbarians.
Greeks wouldn't have liked that.
