hey im new here, i like to forum surf here alot, just troll around and read. But a topic about, jerking awake when sleeping kinda caught my interest. I have that happen from time to time. But another strange thing that happens to me is as im partialy sleep, i feel alseep but still have a constius (Spelling?) state of mind about me i can hear voices calling out my name. Some times its family or friends voices, and other times complete strangers. and soon after that i either jerk to a full awake state or fall asleep. Any comments? Does this happen to anyone?

I'm not sure if what i experience, is what you were trying to describe skazz, but what sometimes happens to me is that i'll be just going to sleep and then i get a sensation as if i'm falling, but when i look around all i can see is darkness and a flight of stairs above me, i'm not fully awake, but i can feel my body jerk as if i have just fallen down the flight of stairs, and then i go completely to sleep, it started happening to me when i was a child, and it still happens alot,

I have this problem. Its like when your half asleep and thinking of jumping or catching something my body reacts to it. I think its when your bodies not fully asleep (not moving) but your mind has started to dream.

I have heard someone calling my name when I was almost asleep. The first time it happened it scared me it's like it was right in my ear. Each time it has happened it was shortly after someone in my family died. I am so glad that I am not the only one this has happened to. It happened again last night but so far I have not heard if anyone died yet.

Yeah, I get this all the time. It'll be like a half dream, where I'm falling or something, and right at the point of impact, I'll spasm or something and be awake.

It could easily be your imagination, but this state of calm mind is much like a trance state in which one is more sensitive to the paranormal. One way to test whether or not they're imaginary would be to ask for information that proves they're not imaginary. If they can do this, then you're tapping into more than your imagination, and if not, who knows. Can't say that I have similiar experiences (except for once, as I described at length under "Visit" in Sightings, Reports & Experiences). I have had the jerking my arm or whatever when I take a dream to seriously (react physically to it) and then wake up.

I did some research last night and found out it's called sleep paralysis. It's brought on by stress.

Sometimes I'll hear voice or sounds about my room, nothing definite or something that can be made out that often but it's still a bit creepy. It sort of resembles the whispers in Lost but only one voice. I'm not in a state of paralysis when i hear it so i'll just turn on my light and read a bit and they will be gone. This doesnt happen very often, maybe four or five times a year.

A lot of people get this, myself included. Usually it's accompanied by a disturbing dream. What happens is that as you are going to sleep the part of your brain that allows motor functions starts to shut down. Sometimes the part of your brain that dreams is already running full tilt though.
Basically, you're acting out a dream before that other part of your brain realizes that you're asleep. You may be dreaming about running but, your motor controlling section of the brain hasn't realized that it's off duty and you'll wake up kicking or trying to run! You may have noticed a family pet that in the middle of restful sleep will start "chasing a rabbit". The same thing can and does happen to us! Sometimes your brain interpretes the dream as real and over rides the motor controlling part of the brain. That's why you wake up from a really bad nightmare and bolt strait up in bed. (Or at least some people do. Many even persist that the dream is real for several moments after seeing thier surroundings! This is refered to as a "night-fright"). Not to be crude but, have you ever heard of a "wet dream"? It is also a closely related phenomenon.
I know that this is not the best or most scientific of explainations but, it's accurate in a kindergarten sort of way and doesn't include little men from under your bed steeling your dirty socks to power a starship!. It's the way that makes sence to me so, I'm sharing! I hope it's helpful to you!
If this is a problem that is depriving you of restful sleep you may want to contact a professional. It doesn't mean that you're crazy anymore than a bandaid means that you're bleeding to death! It just means that you might be better off having this explained by someone who knows what they are talking about, as opposed to me! Sometimes when things are properly explained to a sufferer, they never experience them again.
I hope that I've been heplful, Skazz, and welcome ot UM!

There have been a couple times when i'd falling asleep in class. Phasing into sleep, I was overcome with vertigo (the sensation of falling) and threw up my arms and yelled. It's usually a quiet setting, so everyone is startled and looks at me funny. I dont think its uncommon for someone to feel vertigo on the edge of sleep though.
But to reply to the main topic here, I dont recall a time when I'd hear someone's voice calling as I fall asleep.

I've had numerous experiences with this is Skazz, 1 experience where they told me their name age and where they were from. It was a very common name so theres no way I can check into him see if he exists or existed. Charles Smith 50, Boston. Was all I heard. I very much awake at the time. it just at the time im relaxing to sleep but still awake. It's like my brian skips and then I hear this voice. Hello, sometimes my name, sometimes random words, rare phrases. Like one , telling me I don't care Rachel ...this happened after a particular incident with a friend. They are all strangers voices. i've heard my mothers voice once. I've always had this happen even as a kid.
my theory is its telepathy...and when we relax we open to received and send... just a theory...

Your fully aware dreams are called lucid dreams. Definitely look this up if yuo haven't heard of it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dreamin...mmon_techniquesI know exactly what you're talking about with those random spasms though. Like right as you fall in a dream you shake. Now what I'm wondering is if that is the same thing as that sleep paralysis thing I've read about, where you lose control of your body really briefly. I guess I don't have control because I just shook for half a second, but I haven't really tried to move myself during the half second either...Anyone get what I'm talking about?
This is about sleep paralysis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysisBut is that the same thing as those short spasms you get?

Must have been important for you to go to school that day and get there on time (and not fall asleep) for some reason. Maybe you needed a little help from someone.
