I can't stand catching sheepshead, we always pick them up while fishing for walleye or LMB its like pulling in a log, but they do fight some of the time

we call the freshwater drum a sheepshead up here in central New York, its just a nick name, but its really a drum. I should have known you were talking about a different fish.

they can put up a fight though. i was on the lake drifting with my dad, and i put my rod down to grab a bite to eat, i almost lost my pole!! the stupid fish snatched my minnow about 10 seconds after i put my pole down, its a good thing i was sitting next to it. funny enough, it was the only thing we caught all day! it was a lousy summer of fishing here in New York, spring was great, fall has been so so

i know, salmon river is awesome i hear, i was going to use some gear that i guy i work with has, but i've been pretty busy, the river is only 30minutes away, and oneida lake is a few miles north, it has incredible LMB and walleye, i'm surrounded by great trout streams, and i live not too far from the adirondack mountains were i can go hunt native brookies, central new york is awesome for fishing, i'm really lucky! how is the fishing by everyone else? do you have to go far for great fishing?

Not more than a few hours. I'm surrounded by the Great Lakes

Great fishing in Michigan. I'm heading up to a place 2 hours north called tawas City to fish for whitefish and steelhead tommorow. I'll let you know how it goes.
frogfish
Nov 19 2006, 01:20 AM
Well, I went fishing for Whitefish today at Tawas City. For whitefish, you need at least a 3 foot chop and the wind to blow right in your face because they are skittish. Lake Huron today was perfectly calm. No one hooked a whitefish. The night fisherman crushed them, it seemed. The only fish caught were a couple suckers and a 30 inch Lake trout.

Nov 30 2006, 11:46 PM
Hmmmm...That's a very hard question.
I think it would have to be LMB and Salmon/Trout. In a close second would be Saltie Fish

Well, if it has fins, I'll fish for it.

What state do you live in? It's too cold here in MI. I might go fishing for steelies, or wait till the ice thickens.

i live in syracuse NY, i'm surrounded by great fishing. i didn't go for walleye this weekend, i when fly fishing instead, but the water was too high and fast, so i mostly just walked through the woods along the stream, found a few slower pockets of water, and wet my line. no fish, but a great day nonetheless.

Dec 13 2006, 01:29 PM
dood i love fishing, fishing and hunting are my life, but because fishing is the topic i'll talk about that. ok, Ive been to Alaska, S Carolina, N Carolina, Maine, england, and Hawaii. I'll tell you guys and girls about alaska since i go there more often than any other place, now Alaska has silver salmon, king salmon, rainbow trout. You'll find these guys in rivers and the ocean during migration, this one time i was fishing for silver salmon in jims creek now the water is freezing because about 200 yards out in the water theres a glacier so its freakin cold , but back to the story the coolest thing about fishin for silver salmon is they put up a fitgh and I mean a fight any fishermans dream. And its not expensive like basss fishing with all the lures, but all you need for salmon fishing is a hook, line, small bat, rod, knife, and yarn. the yarn is your bait. So im out there fishing and i catch a 75 pound salmon.
but ive never heard of rock fishinig? and if any one would like to know the technique for using the yarn just pot a reply
see ya

The world record for silver salmon is 33.4 pounds, caught on Sept 27, 1989.

QUOTE
the yarn is your bait.
If you're caught with yarn on a hook here in MI, you're ticketed for snagging. The best way for catching salmon in MI is crankbaits (ShadRaps, Flatfish, or HotNTots), flies (especially drakes, hexes, streamers, and egg patterns including leeches), spoon/spinners, or spawn.
QUOTE

The rod and reel for salmon itself can be quite expensive. We have two spinning outfits and two fly outfits, the average of each which was $250
Boy would I love to go to Alaska. Best of all, I know some great guys that are stationed up there that have became salmon masters. These great soldiers have offered to take us fishing if we ever go to Alaska.
www.salmonslayers.com
But the Great Lakes salmon fishery is also great. Fish up to 30lbs. You might not catch the monsters you catch up in BC and Alaska, but they fight just as hard.
You can see the pictures in this thread...There somewhere here

Rock fishing? You mean bottom fishing?

i have not fished the salmon river here yet, i going to buy a spinning gear rig for it, and i have a fly rod, i just need to get a reel and line. then i'm off in the spring for the first of two runs of steelhead. its too late for salmon. i mostly fish the lakes around here and the streams. if your ever up in central NY just let me know if you want to go fishing i've always got at least two or three poles in my car trunk at all times, but i'm sure you do too.

The salmon river is just awesome. The only thing I can compare it to in the Great lakes is Manistee. Fish between Pulaski and Almatar. For steelhead, spawn and floats are working the best.

Poor fish swimming around, minding its own business, ooh there's lunch! next minute it's got a great big hook in its mouth.
I think fishermen should hunt or 'fish' each other! They could take it in turns to be the fish and swim around in the lake, while the other er 'sportsman' sits on their fat lazy ass dangling worms from a rod.

I don't mind any of the examples you gave, providing it's for food. It's calling it a 'sport' which I have a problem with. Zapping Turkeys? When was that classed as a sport? But if it was... and involved sitting on your fat ass all day, you can bet your average fisherman would soon take it up.

Imbecile? are we in the 19th century?
So, have to attack the person not the debate? Lost...why? cause you can't even justify why you fish.
Sport? don't make me laugh.. Where's the sportmanship? A rod, dangling in a lake catching little fish..wow, big mighty men.
I laugh when fishermen say things like "OOOOh yeah that one put up a real good fight" when really they're holding a tiny little fish!
