Who knew the little creek 5 minutes from my house had trout this big!

My friend caught this monster native rainbow on a salamander panther martin, size 2. It barely broke 20"!
linked-image

His other bow measured at 16". On the same lure.
linked-image

I had another trout on a PM silver, but it spit the hook.

Funny thing is, we saw carp swimming in the same pool as the trout.

theres a fishin float in teh next town, hte floats is bacically abunch of bocks adn boats attached and its right in front of the damn but theres a cut behind it and slow shallow water and weed beds to the side, so u can go there and catch NAYTHING that lives in the mississippi from bluegill to sturgeon. its fun but expessive because we always end up getting food (theres a houseboat converted into a cafe). its pretty nice but my friend s OBsESSED with snggin sturgeon off the dam wall, even though tsi illegal, snagging and the species of sturgeon he is snagging.
DДrk_Lotu§
I love fishing it is so relaxing just to kick back toss the line and have a cold beer with my buddies and hope we catch some fish so we can cook it over the fire
Black_Spade
I've only been fishing once out in Elkhart Texas. I caught a catfish about 8 inches long. Not much of a story but I'm a city boy...

it's not just illegal, it's immoral!

I hope the DNR bust him, so he gets a nice little stay in jail and has to pay a huge fine. Sturgeon snaggers are the worst...They don't even deserve to be called fisherman. They're scum, and they're destroying one of the US's most rare and beautiful species.

Do the right thing, and turn him in.

frogfish
That's a nice brown. You can see those teeth too!

Ciraxis

It's nice that you are getting some trout in the middle of summer, Ciraxis!

I'm going to chase some early salmon next weekend in one of the most beautiful rivers in MI, the Little Manistee! Wish me luck!
Ciraxis
good lucky buddy, i'm getting all crazy waiting for the salmon run.
Lt_Ripley
I DO ! large mouth Bass fishing is nice around here. My brother before he died caught one just over 6 lbs. He had it stuffed.
frogfish
hey Ciraxis, what river do you fish for salmon?

Ever try the Salmon River in NY?
Ciraxis
I'm going to hit the salmon river i think this year, i'll head to the fly fishing only section.

but mostly my brother and me will hit the smaller tribs, fewer people and the fish are just as big. But no way in hell do we ever give out the names of those creeks. I don't want all the snaggers lining up shoulder to shoulder with me while i'm trying to fly cast.

frogfish
You gotta hate combat fishing... mad.gif
Ciraxis
I really do hate the guys that stand shoulder to shoulder, I don't care if your fly fishing or just using spinning gear, but give a guy some room. thats not enjoyable, I fish to get away from the crowds, not to go wedge myself between a bunch of drunk jerk offs.

Welcome to MI salmon fishing...Here, the rivers with no crowds normally pass through private lands. Then you have to deal with the drunk jerk landowner.
Jack_of_Blades
Didn't do too much fishing this summer. Panfished mainly. Also tried crayfish trapping this
year..... didn't turn out so well.

Haha. I know that's right. Here in the midwest it is pretty much the law to panfish. I like it because when you find that school of crappie you can just keep on catching. Nothing like relaxing on a nice day outside throwing the line into the water.

From our last trip to Tippy...

I'll be heading up north thing week, and hopefully i'll be able to post some pics of fresh-run kings.
Lone Ranger
I'm ready for the fall...cool weather for the Reds and Specks.........
Ciraxis
i hate that, but at least i know of a few uncrowded places
frogfish
Lucky Duck...The place where I'm going this weekend is not very crowded. I normally will share the hole with 1 or 2 other people.
Sweetpumper
I get to go tomorrow for the weekend again! WooHoo!
Sweetpumper
Well, I'm back, empty handed.

A lady put a bullet in her skull at the campground we were staying at.
Legatus Legionis
i really want to go fishing but there's not a single fishing spot here in my town.
Ciraxis

I went to Ludington this weekend. We left at 4 in the morn so we could get there by sunrise.
For those of you that don't know, Michigan is going through a drought now, and the salmon run is behind by two weeks in places. So we got there around 7:30, and instead of heading to our cottage on Hamlin Lake, we drove right to Stronach (about 20 minutes north of Ludington) to fish my favorite river in the world, the Little Manistee. Well, we got there and started fishing by 8. We were fishing with Pete and Noella, a couple we meet there every year. They were the ones that taught me how to catch salmon 8 years ago. During a good run, the hole we fish has between 20-40 fish. Today, it had two. Pete hooked one about 5 minutes after I started fishing. Due to my landing net error, the fish threw the hook and went downstream. The other fish in the hole jetted upstream while the battle ensued. So we got out of the river and sat down, talking while we waited for more fish to show up. Around 9:30, two kayakers came through, and said they saw about 5 fish the whole stretch of the river they fished. We hoped they would scare some upstream. Around 10, 3 more salmon showed up at the hole. Pete hooked the first one, which broke him off on the pipes. 5 minutes later, I was drifting my 3" spey fly through the hole. At the end of the drift, my line stopped. I set the hook, and FISH ON! The fish first bulldogged at the bottom of the hole, then shot upstream. After bringing him back, I tired him out until Pete could net him.

A FRESH 35" male!

After 12, we left for Ludington. then it started raining. It rained non-stop through Sunday night. Normally, rain is good for the salmon run, which in this case, it was. However, Sunday morn we were surprised to find only 3 fish again! We just missed a push of 8 or so fish. i hooked into 1 more with a yellow bunny fly, but he popped loose after 20 seconds.
We left at 12 again. My sister wanted to do something else. We did manage to do some panfishing at Hamlin lake, catching a lot of small panfish and perch.

I hooked into a 18" pike, but it spit out my bait after a short fight.

The rain kinda slowed things down, but overall it was a decent weekend. However, we did eat some great food, and have some of the best ice cream in the state (House of Flavors). I'll be going back for some more salmon later.

Ghost Ship
That place sure does look peaceful and serene. I was taught how to fly fish and i have been thinking lately about buying a fly fish rod and maybe a regular fishing rod as well. But there's licences and stuff you need i think. I would love to drive out to a remote fishing spot and do some fishing. I haven't fished before though.
frogfish
You can buy an annual resident liscense. It's well worth it!
Ciraxis
I have an annual license in ontario, and i'm a US citizen, and it only cost me $40 bucks i think for a conservation tag, very cheap, its even cheaper for a resident. depending on where you live, i might know a fly shop or two for you to check out, and depending on how much you want to spend, I could help you pick out a decent rod/reel and other crap you'll need.
frogfish
Same! If you have any questions, just ask! Ciraxis or I will gladly help!

Heres one.......... I was 11yrs old and we'd gone down the river on my Uncles boat to the mouth and decided to throw in a line. I was determind to get something.

frogfish
Barramundi are cool fish! I heard they fight really hard too!

Hey Ciraxis, TFO makes great rods for the price!
Ciraxis
damn straight they do, i have a 4 wt TFO too that i love, you just can't beat the customer service, price, quality and the lifetime warrnaty.

i've found the TFO rods to be of the same quality as higher priced rods.

I share with you the one and only 'fish' story I have that's worthy of anything....

Back in the day when I was married, the hubby and I went to Hawaii to see his family. We chartered a boat and went Marlin fishing...
Four of us, the skipper and his mate for six.
I was 'first in the chair' as I was the only newbie.
I caught a 192lb, 12ft, 9inch long Blue Marlin.

I will never go again most likely...but u never know...
I don't know why I didn't think at the time, but they clubbed it to death once it was near the boat.
For all the excitement in my 'catch'... I was devistated that this is what happened to it.
I console myself knowing that the locals eat Marlin...least it wasn't a wasted life.
And I guess, how else do you kill a fish bigger then everyone on the boat other then clubbing it?
Least they didn't pull out a shot gun or something...
Guess had they 'asked me'... I would have requested it be released.
But they didn't...and ... I got a great pic anyway! teehee!!
I can PROOVE i caught that monster! Ha!
Ciraxis
well where is the picture?

I release about 99% of all fish i catch, though i don't have anything against keeping a fish. I think though, if you keep a fish you should eat it.

Yeah you gotta keep em close to the top of the water, then slowly tirer them out. Other wise the deeper they are the more they dart about. "Their strong as."
frogfish
99.9% of all Marlin caught in Hawaii nowadays are tagged and released.

I'll keep a few fish from time to time...especially salmon. Good for your health, and tasty!

A little PS magic...

In many shark tounaments, when the catch has to be brought in, they will either shoot the fish or sever the spinal cord. But the meat is NEVER wasted. I know most shark tournaments donate the meat to homeless shelters.

i enjoy bass fishing. smallmouth and largemouth.

Hey all, well my dad and I finally made it back up north this past weekend. I packed all night, and we left the house around 3:30 AM. We got to our first spot, the PM river round Gleason's landing about 45 minutes before sunrise. We doned on our waders and equiped our vests, and were ready to hook into some nice fish.

linked-image

We got to our hole, and started fishing. We didn't hook anything for a while, and didn't see very many salmon.

linked-image

Around 11, right after a pod of 3 fish moved in, I hooked into my first salmon of the day. Lost it after a minute, but BOY did it get the adrenaline pumping! I hooked it on a chartreuse half-half streamer. However, the next couple hours didn't go so well, hooking into 4 more fish and losing two to landing net errors. We lfet to eat lunch around 1:30, and then made the hard decision to go more north and try the Betsie/Platte rivers, which we never fished before.

linked-image
31 North to Benzonia

linked-image
Hodepyl Pond

We reached Benzonia around 4:30, and checked out a spot on the Betsie. It sure was crowded, but we saw a ton of fresh fish in the holes. We decided we would hit this area hard Sunday, and get there before the crowds arive. We drove to the mouth of the Betsie where it empties into Betsie Lake and tried there for some time. The fish were jumping everywhere, and there were only 6 people fishing, including my dad and me! The first two hours were hot, hooking into 6 fish with Little Cleos and landing two of them. I tailed another fish, but it slipped out of my grasp and the line snapped!
The big male:
linked-image

A spawned out female:
linked-image

Both of these fish were promptly released. After that, they action slowed down considerably and we left to eat dinner and check in a motel.

We woke the next morn at 5, and hit the Betsie river about 30 minutes before sunrise.

I hooked into two salmon, which both shook the hook before light. We fished a hole chocked full of fresh salmon for the rest of the day, hooking into about 20 between me and my dad in 13 hours. I enjoyed the worst landing sucess I have ever had salmon fish this weekend, but it was a BLAST. The fish were fresh and everywhere. There were no less than 20 fish in the hole at a give time. I hooked into man fish, ranging from a monster in the 25+ range to small jacks. I lost many to wood, and a couple to landing net errors yet again, but did manage to land this feisty big female. Sorry about the stringer, but she was destined for the smoker and would not stay still!
linked-image

We left the Betsie around 7 PM. We quickly checked out the Platte before heading home. We saw some decent pods of kings there, but no cohos. We didn't make it out to Loon Lake, so we didn't get to see the monstrous schools of cohos. My dad and I were sure glad we took the risk coming up to the Betsie. We had a great time together, and will sure come back next year!
Ciraxis
here are some bows i caught up in canada on a private pond, all the fish i caught were pretty much this size if not bigger, these two were breakfast, the others I let go. caught some huge brookies out of there, bigger than these two, but I put them back without a picture session

linked-image
frogfish
Beautiful bows Brad! And Brookies even bigger? Amazing! Your lucky to have a lake with big fish like that! I'm guessing you're in Manitoba?

Good job!

I'm trying to get in a trip for steelies and cohos before November, otherwise my next trip will be for lake whitefish at the end of November...

Brad, is that your TFO rod? How does it handle? Is your reel the Orvis Battenkill?
Ciraxis
no that rod is my St Croix 3wt, 7ft. Its the niced damn rod ever, I don't really use my 4wt TFO anymore, but its a great rod and company, so much so that I bought my 9wt from TFO. Yes its a battenkill reel, and its pretty damn good for the price, roughly $100, i think ts better than some reels twice as much.

I was fishing up in ontario, but not that far north. I'm hoping to get out for some steel before Nov, and I haven't fished for whitefish in awhile, but I know a great spot for them right near where I caught these bows, whitefish put up a great fight.
frogfish
Yea, whitefish put a great fight and are very tasty! I can't wait to get out for them! Don't you just love St. Croix? Amazing rods!

Oh, so it's not that far from you! You found yourself a great spot there Brad. Post some pictures of the steel! I'll be sure to do the same!
